Greetings GJ Friends ,

I've been away for a spell, but I'm till dabbling ! I bought this 4 inch Coachmaker guy yesterday for a song and have yet to disassemble it. I spent 10 minutes with a wire wheel cleaning up some test spots and it is in outstanding shape thus far. It weighs 43 Pounds and appears hardly used except for a few minor marks on top of the jaws. I spent 3 hours researching old threads here, and on other forums and can't find any info on these un marked guys. The base looks like Parker or Athol to me, and it is not modified. Again, there are no markings, numbers or any indicacia on the exterior. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

I think you’re on the right track with the Parker idea. My best guess is a Parker 4000. Your spindle handle is different and the collar is missing. But this is just my guess. Pulled this picture out of the 1912 catalog.

Good luck!

Yeah, I'll agree with Randall3rd, probably a Parker model no.4000 without the improved collar. At first, I thought it was a Parker Vulcan or a Trojan line vise, but they were 4-1/2" jaw models. Parker's economy vises all had kinda "funky" screw spindles.

Either way, it's a great pickup!

You guys are great.. However, I believe the spindle and squared off (what I call a "Marshmallow") meatball to be original.to the vise. There are no holes present which the traditional Parker retainer collar screw. into, and the vise has not been monkeyed with.. She's all original and smooth as silk. I think you are correct on the econo version being offered with the lesser grade spindle arrangement !
