Well ladies and gentlemen, after about 4 years renting, I've finally bought a new place - a 1960s split-level.

My previous Small Rental Garage will be retired. This one is not as large as I would like, but bigger than before and with some care should be plenty for me.

One thing I will be doing is storing bicycles in their own shed. This will have to be built, so will likely be later this fall or next year.

I'm starting with a pretty new garage, but a blank slate. No insulation. Inadequate ventilation. Inadequate wiring. A basic place to park cars.

It's basically empty now. There is a small kitchen cabinet in the corner. I'm moving the old kitchen cabinets in now. There is also a fridge sitting here while we are getting the insides ready.

Todo is French cleats for the wall cabinets. A ridge vent and insulation between the trusses. A few more outlets and some receptacles for overhead shop lights.

Looks like a great space. It appears that this was an addition to the house or is this a detached garage.

Fantastic blank slate. Get out the notepad, ink for the printer, and start jotting down and printing off the ideas you want for the garage. As you know, the ideas on here are endless, so recording them is almost a must, or you'll be changing you mind quite often. Set up a folder on the computer desktop, and copy pictures of your ideas to that folder. Good luck and keep us posted!!!:beer:

If you don't hear from me, I might be trapped under something.

Damn! haha thats a lot of stuff.

What size is the garage? At least at this point you can start it off the way you want instead of ripping out what someone else thought was "good enough."

I hate how the garage gets the overflow when moving but it is what it is. Just don't be like me and take 2 years to organize. My shed really helped. Best of luck, looks in great condition.

Not much happened this summer. I shoved some things around trying to get to the things in the back. Made little aisles around. This weekend though I finally had time to work on the cabinets. I am reusing cabinets from the house that were replaced when the kitchen was redone as well as some base cabinets from a previous house and a wall cabinet from the alley.

Here is the driveway of some of the junk that will get shoved back in.

Here is a picture of the wall of cabinets.

Having a bit of trouble posting.

Here's some more.

So far the cabinets are mostly empty. I have some reorganization to do and then I'll do a counter top of plywood.

So for three months not much has been going on. But today I finally had some time and nice weather to tackle the next phase: lighting and counter tops.

First I started by taking everything off of the countertops and putting it into the empty cabinets.

I bought some led fixtures that would fit on the edge of a 2x4 so I would not lose any rafter access.

Attached the to the rafter above the back wall of cabinets.

Put another two under the cabinets for lighting.

Took a break to eat some more pumpkin pie.

Then set to work on the countertops. This is reused wood from my old bench and some scrap to build it up. I haven't attached the top yet. I will add a backsplash and then screw it to the cabinets.

The two pieces of ply are sandwiched with brass screws. I thought they would be nice. But I ran out. So I'll have to go to the store to get some more. After everything is mounted I'll add my vices.

It has been a while.

As I last left the garage it was reasonably cleaned up. There were still bicycles and various house projects in progress.

Had a bit of time this weekend to add some bicycle storage and move some stuff to the rafters.

This is a 2x4 deck approximately 8' built from wood I had on hand. Decking is just scrap - some osb and some masonite.

I strapped the diagonals with what I had on hand. There is some splitting from the nail. I'll stop at the hardware store and see if they have some bracing that will do a better job. You'll notice I ran out and did not strap the far end.

Had a free weekend day and got some cleanup done in the garage. The majority of the house projects are down so we can discard some of the unused materials.

The bike rack on the side doesn’t provide enough room to park the cars in together so the bikes have been put on the back porch. This will be fine until spring, but we’ll need to get a bike shed or something then.

Two cars in the garage:
