Here's a little update on things in the garage.

Got this old SnapOn ratchet a while back but haven't been using it much as the ratchet mechanism doesn't feel that snappy. Should I just use the suggested rebuild kit RKRA380 or are there any upgrades?

My brother in law's family has a gravel business and they frequently pull out old (1000-2000 years) swamp timber which they mill up. So I've got a substantial stash of Totora a native hardwood and am in the process of getting more woodworking equipment to do something with it. I Bought this New Zealand made bandsaw a couple months ago, nothing special but does the job. Haven't found a good cheap table saw yet which is a good thing as I'm still trying to 'create' the space for it.

Had the opportunity to get some items from a friends dad's old shop. First I got this 1 inch thick welding table made from a vault door for free. Traded some welding work for it. Needs a clean up and maybe replace the legs with some square tubing salvaged out of a demolished house.

Also got this 30" metal brake which my friends dad made and a steady rest for my lathe.

After the new year I'll be picking up this small but heavy duty press. Won't get used a lot but for free I couldn't pass it up.

As always the garage is in constant change as I try to find balance. Since I got the welding table I decided I had too much bench space for the small size of this shop. So I am in the process of breaking down the cabinet against the left wall to repurpose it into high shelves/materials rack which will clear more floor space to put a bike or another machine. Am currently looking for a small surface grinder.

The left wall might end up being a mirror of what I have already started on the right back wall. I lined the walls with 1/2" ply and am still in the process of putting up some heavy duty shelves. I also made a box from some old steel shelving for my lathe's vfd and braking resistor and mounted that to the wall.

My wife and I have been discussing renovating our house to add a little more room for the future. I'm looking into the possibility of excavating the backyard and creating an underground room which would be accessed through the existing vault door.

And lastly our 15 month old son has been spending more and more time in the workshop which makes us both happy :)

Just finished reading through your entire thread and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it! I absolutely LOVE what you've done with such a special, unique space. Gave me a lot of great ideas and made me long for some good metal tools I still don't have.

It was also special to see your little boy go from not even a thought to 15+months old. Great to see him playing in the shop, I hope he continues to keep you company!

Merry Christmas to you!

Hi e-tek,
Thanks for your comments and glad you enjoyed it! Hope to have more to post soon. Hardly get enough time in there and even less to produce anything close to the entertaining and informative posts on this board.
Cheers,
John

d money,

Thanks, the scooters keep me busy! I finally got approval to get the knuck vinned a couple months ago. It was a long process but because of some bad paperwork and shady stuff when I imported it things got a little complicated. Pretty psyched to get her on the road but things seem to keep getting in the way.

Anyway, the big news is we're moving on from that place. We bought a larger house about a month ago and just closed the deal to sell our current one. Crazy thing is the new place only has a single garage right on the road and that probably won't do so the plans are to build a ground up new garage. Pretty excited for the opportunity to makes things exactly the way I want and really looking forward to a completely dry space. A couple of my bikes will go into a friends garage and the rest of my stuff will get crammed into the single until we get the new place built.

We get the keys next week, exciting stuff.

Little room in the single garage for an old vault door for purposes of theme continuity?

Yeah, well you know I seriously considered removing the door and bringing it with me. I might consider pouring a cavity in the floor somewhere where I can install a smaller one as I will miss having it.

I Know that feeling... Knowing that you can use your small space more efficiently and as the projects grow you realise how better to setup for them... My wife thinks me moving the workshop around is just a fun past time for me... but all im trying to do is reach a point where you can open the door... Look around... and know exactly what corner is for what, without the need to constantly pull tools/machines off storgae shelves so you can set them up to use them...

Love what you have keep up the cool ideas... Sub'd

Been a while...

Another baby boy, mom passed. Life has been busy.

Also moved house and built a new garage! Construction started in 2014 and was able to move in about a year ago. We are unfortunately still dealing with some waterproofing issues. The contractor has taken responsibility for all the repairs but it's a constant headache trying to keep them moving.

Anyway, here are a couple quick pictures of the setup. I didn't get the chance to do the ground up organization as far as cabinets etc, had to keep costs down and I needed to get everything into the garage and get back to work. Now that everything has settled down a little and the garage build is essentially paid off (not the mortgage though ;) ) I can slowly try to reorganize and build a place for everything.

Garage is 80 square meters, two spots for cars the rest for the workshop. Poured concrete patio on top. How do you keep these floors clean! :3gears:

I plan on starting a stand alone thread for this garage in the future if time permits.

Whoa! looking flash!
That's certainly an upgrade over the old one. And even room for the cars!

Congrats on the birth of baby boy #2, and my condolences re your mum. Everything just seems to happen at once sometimes eh.

We're about to start the process of renovations, likewise including a new workshop with deck above. Now that I've finally made GJ post #1, I guess I better make sure I start a thread and document it!

I've added a new lathe to my fleet, a 1980's "Shun Shin" taiwanese one, similar in size to your Colchester. I've fitted it with a DRO and it's fantastic.
I've got a massive new cast iron stand for my mill-drill too, just awaiting me to finish stripping it and repainting. It should bring the table and handwheels up to a much more comfortable working height.

I probably only had one boy last time I was in touch - well we've got another boy now and a girl! 7, 4.5 and 2.5 yrs. They sure keep us on our toes.

Anyway, awesome to see an update to The Vault. I've got much more to write but it's a busy last day before Christmas. I'll email soon, but wanted to put a reply up here!

All the best,
Kenneth <still making coffee tampers on and off!

Hey Kenneth!

Great to hear from you! Finally getting a moment to write after the holidays. Good luck with the renovations. Three little ones must be keeping you pretty busy.

My DRO is still sitting in a box waiting in line behind lots of other projects to be installed. Can't wait to get it working.

Would love to see what you have been up to and your renovations.

Let me know if you're ever around town would be great to see you.

Cheers,
John
