Hi there. New member and I just bought my first house with garage. Wont be able to move in for two months but thought I'd get the inspiration going. Only two pictures to show today. House isnt in a sketchy area or anything but at some point a prior owner seemed to have some real security issues. Bars seperate the garage area from the workshop and in the shop there is a full sized vault door going into a low ceiling bunker like room. Trying to come up with ideas of what to use that room for and can only come up with a wine cellar or storage of vintage bike engines. Any ideas? Unfotunately dont have a good shot of the vault but in the close up pic you can kind of see the door through the bars.

Garage will be built for machining and restoring vintage motorbikes, so will have the lathe and mill in there soon. Cant wait to get moved in!!

I'd leave the bars there they are pretty cool . As far as the valt put your compresser in there then you won't have to here it runnig .

I used to have a darkroom when I was young but not doing it now. I only quickly checked but getting that steel door open and closed was quite an effort but it might free up.

Agreed about safety, but no kids yet, trike not mine, dont move in til Jan 14. Gonna be a long two months dreaming. Yeah, its actually good the safe door takes an effort to open and close. When there are kids (which is getting closer and closer) I seriously doubt they could budge the door. Really need to take a better look at it when I go back.

Just got some good news today. Will be moving in in a month instead of two. Woohoo! Plan on running by this weekend. Will post some more pics if it works out.

this isnt The Vault garage but garage related none the less. Had my lathe delivered today.

In other news we can move into the new house a month earlier! So only a month away. This week just keeps getting better and better.

Finally, here is a pic of the vault door. Took a look inside last weekend. The ceiling is a little low, my head just touches it when standing straight but wouldnt be a terrible job to lift the concrete slab a couple of feet.

After checking out the vault some more there is drainage, temp control and lighting. No Idea what the previous owner was doing in here Will mostly just be used for storage for now

Looks like fun,

May I suggest the when you pick up your lathe or any other lathes you sling them from the bed. The bed is always strong enough to support the weight of the machine, a chip tray may not be.

Regarding your vault, is is fire proof? Store the family treasures in there.

hi steve. Yes. I wouldn't let that happen again. The operator had sling it up and move it like that before I noticed. When I had it moved the second time to where it is now i made sure he slung it from the bed.

Yup. The safe is solid concrete so fireproof.

It looks like a good place to store stuff that you don't want anything to happen to. I'd use the vault for my Guns, photo albums, irreplaceable stuff, If it's temp and humidity controlled chances are it was used for guns?

Yeah, looks like an excellent safe for personal goods and guns. I would love to have that in my garage. What is the deal on the left side of the garage? Is it all windows with bars. It's hard for me to tell in the pictures. What supports the structure above it, or is the metal the structure?

Thanks guys. Yeah I'm pretty happy to be there. Story goes that the guy did have guns in there. Why do the guns like temp control? There is just a skeleton key lock on the vault at the moment haven't located the key yet. Don't know what it would take to upgrade the key to combination. As you can see the door is pretty solid with four bars which fit into the steel door frame when locked.

The upper wall on one side of the Outer garage is transparent corrugated sheets with iron bars. I think I could improve the weather proofness of this part. Structure above the vault is concrete and steel beam. Structure above outer garage is wood and steel beam with trap door access from the studio above.

Floor is pretty roughly finished concrete and would like to a do a quick sealer coat to keep the dust down.

I'd use it for wht it LOOKS like you've already started - a workroom. Work bench, lathe, standing drill press, bench grinder and polisher on their own stands, all lining the walls. Then maybe a low 4'x4', work table for working on engines, furniture refinishing, etc. That way the main part of your garage can be kept clean, your bikes won't gather dust and grime.

Just a quick little gallery update with the current state of things. Hope to get some cabinets built and a general spruce up done this year but there are also general improvements to the structure that need doing.

Need to do something about that corrugated acrylic sheeting which leaks in the rain and wind. Would love to replace it with glass block but damn thats expensive. Been planning my drainage fixes.

Ive got my plan set for this room. If I could only stop my bike projects to get some work done.

In the process of rebuilding my workbench.

At the left end of the bench I will be building a cabinet which will be the base for my parts shelves which can be seen on left side behind vault door. Got the bench top for free from work and salvaged as much wood as possible from the old bench. Will be adding shelves under the work bench.

Decided to take down this cinder block wall which was a remnant from when the wood burner was here. Ill be making another low bench top/welding table there and venting out the old woodburner stovepipe.

Feels really good to finally be making some big changes and trying to maximize the space.

Been busy trying to maximize space and increase storage and organization.

I needed to redo the top of my bench and decided it was too long. I shortened the left side and added a low cupboard which will get doors soon and parts pigeon holes above. The main bench will be getting shelves underneath and maybe doors.

I wanted to get my drill press closer to the lathe and mill so it would be easier to share drill bits. So I knocked down the cinder block wall and placed a temporary bench top there for my drill press, reorganised the drawers and am still deciding whether I should place that red shallow cabinet above that tabletop or mount it on the vault door.

my makeshift tool cabinet with the 'new' SK box. I would like to paint the red and grey boxes the same green as the SK box.

this is above the lathe. I used to hang a lot of tools on the wall here but have removed them, as well as one shelf. Am going to remove the lower shelf in this picture and build a more organised, shallow cabinet system.

All of the new cabinets and wood etc will get painted at some point. Havent decided yet if Im going to line or even paint the walls. Sometimes I like the feel of the old cement.

This is all a work in progress and once I get a layout I really like Ill go back and clean up what needs fixing. I tend to do things in stages

The outer garage is suffering and is a mess

but the great news is I took my first ride on my 1937 Harley that Ive been working on the past two years!

Yes! Thats exactly what I was thinking and is one of the top things on my list. There's some shrubs on the other side of the clear corrugated which Im looking forward to pulling out. Then replace with some nice clear acrylic like you say which will really brighten it up. Good thing is the bars are there so security is still good. Prying eyes would have to walk all the way down the drive way and through the back gate to see in there so not too worried about that but good point with the curtains. That corrugated was never sealed and leaks so cant wait to get it out of there. Thanks!

Like the knuck. Sold my 1946 knuckle a few years ago. Seen the open primary, is that just with the cover off. Wondering about the oiling process if open. I am down to just my 46 Chief right now.

46 must have been a goodie but you kept the Chief. nice!
I dont have the cover on now while I get a couple things worked out. I've currently shut off the chain oiler so could run it like this and just oil the chain occasionally but wouldnt be too healthy in the rain. As soon as everything settles in, no leaks etc, Ill probably get that cover on.

Worked a little on the workbench today trying to get things ready to put the shelves in. Hope to get all that finished this weekend.
