Well I finally started a new project: A blackhawk hydraulic jack totem pole

DSCN3564 by don long, on Flickr

I have collected all the jacks and now I need a display piece for them

Using the dimensions I got from one offered on Ebay I have been able to recreate this rare piece

s-l1600 (8) by don long, on Flickr

Here is my current project

2020-10-22 17.21.48 by don long, on Flickr

More progress this weekend

check out my totem pole build thread https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465464

I will just say it right now. I'm already jealous. I can't wait to see the final product.

I can't wait until you detail how you're going to make the templates for the graphic paint work.
You ain't the only one! So far this has all been in the category of elaborate fabrication, like building out a new tail fin for a '59 Cadillac El Dorado. The rest of the job is going to be like making the artwork for a reproduction decal - that happens to be a few feet tall. Following with glee.

Really digging this build...

I'm curious to see if you're going to replicate the graphics from the catalog cover or the sample display piece.

I'm glad I'm not the only one running the possibilities. The only way to go, in my mind, is with an extremely talented graphic artist. The old school types who can do the artwork and pinstripe. We had a guy like that who used to show up at the shop and knock out some of the most beautiful custom graphic paint work I've ever seen.

Making templates will also work. If Don goes in that direction, I can't wait to see the process.

This project has been very enjoyable for me

This looks fantastic. I can't wait until you detail how you're going to make the templates for the graphic paint work.

Thanks Horse
No templates, All freehand painting

Sorry Lugnutz
No decal for this one. I'm leaving the faces to my artist to duplicate

If you remember, it was you who turned me on to this project last year with that P.M. telling me about the ebay auction. My pole will look just like the real pole not the advertisement.

I'm sorry I missed your post this morning Horse.
I am using an old school artist that does all my logo work with his one shot paint and his many different brushes.
His best friend growing up in So. Cal was Big daddy Roth (remember the Rat Fink)

No worries, Don. I'm following your main fabrication thread and I hang around the Blackhawk thread with the rest of the addicts. lol. There will be overlap comments from me for sure.

Yea, I figured that you would have a great artist on speed dial given where you live. I also have seen guys who have no artistic talent but are genius engineers build painting templates. For me personally, an artist is the only way to go. That metal will gain a soul and virtually come to life once a real deal artist is finished.

I'm very familiar with Rat Fink. The master himself did one for me decades ago (late 1990s) out in your neck of the woods. It was my parting gift when I left California for good.

No just popped up on a BIN on ebay. I have been on the lookout for one after passing on an overpriced example years ago. The no. 4 set still eludes me. Here it is with the 6, 8 and 10 sets.

Those are very nice.

Thanks donlong And ysguys! I don't have to tell you but old blackhawk stuff is tough. I find most of it online or from fellow gj members as I am in arizona.

Well done! I know someone who picked up the small set this summer at a swap meet and i thought maybe you had traded it with him.

This Blackhawk 49977 came from the honey hole I posted on the 2020 Garage Sale Thread this weekend. Blue Bomber posted the same model early last year.

The drive lug and selector were completely locked up. I was about to start soaking it in degreaser when I bumped it and felt something trickle out of the top of the ratchet. After about 15 minutes of tapping the ratchet I had the pile of gritty **** shown in the 4th pic. One inch high and three inches in diameter, weighing in at just over an ounce. I have to think that it is dried 75 year old grease. The seam at the head of the ratchet is less than 1mm wide so I have to think it was grease-packed at the factory. The mechanism works great now. I tried Outlaw's suggestion and soaked some of the grit in WD-40 to see if it would return to a semblance of its former state--and I even added heat and direct pressure to the process--but didn't get much of a change.

Absolutely beautiful. Your painter has incredible talent.

I guess this means you're running out of room for stuff in that party garage. I know a guy looking for a center section from an Alemite service merchandiser! ;)
