All we have to do now is wait for the GJ member who made the purchase to fess up.
I know you were kidding, but this is funny a couple different ways. Firstly, we do tend to have a disproportionate view of ourselves within the superset. Not all collectors are GJers, and we might not even be 20%. Secondly, after the way the price was ridiculed, he would have to have an ego, a sense of self-confidence, and balls as big as his implied bank account! :)

And for all of these reasons, I profess, it was not me who bought this set. lol :)

I do have one of these sets in the original case but the case itself is in poor shape. One of these days I might restore it but for now I'm not going to touch it. I bought it dirt cheap back when people had little interest in the 1920s/30s era Blackhawk stuff.

One thing to remember is that GJ members often see and are privy to the lowest purchase prices, and this tends to distort our valuing of these objects. We often show off the deals we get, and brag about how low of a price we paid, which distorts the perceived cost of any given object that we relate to in this hobby of ours.

All of that to say, what we might think of as being horribly overpriced could very well appear perfectly within reason to people outside our circle.

Yes quite true! We are a bit of a small niche of the overall collecting community and therefore we have a bit of a perception that may not necessarily be correct given the overall collecting community.

^ Very much true on bmw's statement. The "collector" group here on GJ - which isn't a lot of individuals when you really start doing a head count - is only a tiny portion of the market.

There are multiple options who bought this set:

some people value their time much more and do not care much about the search process (which many of us value trying to find things "in the wild")

Let's say you work tons of hours, make a great salary, already have a great retirement plan, etc, etc, but do not have much time for yourself and your hobby.
One day you see a $350 set and you really want it. You try to calculate how long it would take you to put one together, then how much time you will spend doing it (never mind being able to do it as search takes time).
Then you come to the conclusion that couple of hours of your work are worth the gift.

Alternatively - you are looking for a gift for a father/uncle/brother/close friend who collects these tools and recently mentioned how much he loved seeing this or similar set on GJ. And suddenly this pops up...

Alternatively - there are enough very rich people in this world. Getting a great gift for one of them is not simple as the person already has everything. Well, you just buy something rare and surprise everybody with a unique gift rather than a really old bottle of collectable whiskey or cognac...

Blackhawk tools have spoken to me for more than 20 years. To be honest I used to collect Snap-on but when I saw the light I moved on. Innovation way ahead of it's time which sadly stopped sometime in the mid 50's. Who knows where they would be today if those founding fathers were still overseeing the operation.
You do know Johnson and Siedeman (sp), the founders of SO, worked for Blackhawk before founding SO right?

Now I just need to find a GJ member who is shipping a truck or driving up to MA and has tons of space in the truck : )

I’ve heard rumors of partially shipments on a moving truck, no rush delivery, can be had for reasonable rates. Supposedly shipping a full dining room set from Amish country Ohio to Lake Tahoe is quite reasonable, if you can wait for a truck full. I was looking at a handmade set there for cheaper than local high end stuff, including shipping it.

This is what you want. I've used them several times to move very large items that otherwise would not have had a chance to come home to me. You'll need someone on the other end willing to pack up and drop off your item at the local facility though.

I've been slowly putting this 70RD treasure chest back together over the years. I'm in the single digit missing tools range as of this AM. It's been a lot harder to find the missing wrenches than anything else. You'll note some doubles and maybe a thing or two that shouldn't be in the box. Those things will be moved out once I have every missing item.

Great set and an awful lot of work in those huge lots. Looks like you have two of the 9004 socket release tools. If you ever could think of letting one go - I would really love to buy it for my set.

Nice!!! Thehorse13, the ad is an extra nice touch to it!!!

Please post on the designated Blackhawk toolbox thread as well with the close up picture of the ad!!!

Sure thing. I will take a close up of the ad and then drop the pictures over in your thread.

Luck shined on me for once. lol. There are two 9004s in the box but one of them will end up in another set that I'm working on that also requires a 9004. If I ever stumble over a third one, I would have no issue moving it along to you.

HORSE: That is one very nice set. At one time I thought about collecting Blackhawk but they are as rare here as anywhere and I don't have Twertsy within driving distance (hee hee). nice work!!

also maybe post what you are missing with pics if you haven't already?

A few years ago, Twertsy liquidated his collection and I was fortunate enough to buy a bunch of Blackhawk stuff from him along with some other great stuff.

Present day, it's become pretty miserable trying to find Blackhawk stuff in the wild. Whenever it does happen I celebrate like it's the 4th of July. lol

This is my list as of today. Nine more to go!

3/8ths Universal joint: 8502S
Double Hex Sockets: 7812S, 7814S, 7816S
Short Box Wrenches: 15176, 15177, 15178
Double Hex Socket: 6618
Double Hex Socket: 7816S
