Not long now… The war against paradise begins with a tiny shop buildout on the island of Kauai. After that, I have 1950’s Sears/Roebuck kit home to work over and massage. But before any of that can happen, I have to have a plan to defend my tools from the stuff that makes paradise, paradise.

I want to know how you got the patterns for the tools that you then transferred to your CNC...

I was astonished to find out there's a dragstrip on Kauai. We visited but were too early in the day. Who runs there? Mostly retired servicemen? Interesting.

We need a lizard guy.

I scanned them with my scanner and then traced them illustrator. From there, I just dropped them into v-carve.

It’s an amazing little track. Twenty years ago, my brother and I hopped a fence, crossed a military road, and found the strip in its unrestored state… One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen… just an old wwii era air strip with a single grand stand and a tiny tower.

These days, it’s restored (still gorgeous) and people run it quite a bit… I’d guess their average car count is aound 50 or so? Just locals and old white guys…

I'll be on the island shortly myself. Beautiful place, I can't wait to return. This should be fun to follow, there's a plethora of issues trying to get any construction done on Kauai.

South shore of Kauai....... Probably the wife and I's favorite vacation spot. We were there in '85 and '87......... Stayed in '85 at the Plantation Condos.

Back then there was this little shack restaurant in Koloa town, called the Koloa Broiler. It was there back in the late 50's when my B-I-L was in the Navy. Open-air, with the geckos, etc.....and.....cats. You got to cook your own steaks over a charcoal grill. Delicious. Unfortunately I think some development made it close.......

Very cool, can't wait to see where this goes.
Those remind me of my parents 16mm films from Hawaii when they used to go there in the 50's, on a prop plane.

So glad to be back at Garage Journal!

We have been living on a 44' catamaran in the Caribbean and battling corossion daily. My secret is to pack tools in an airtight Pelican case or a knockoff from Harbor Freight. I give the tools a regular soaking in T-9 Boeshield.

I'm happy to report that even my grandfather's spud wrench from the 1950's has zero rust after a year.

Living on a Tropical Island or a Catamaran is a reality many of us have no conception of.

Looks like you are handling your reality very well.

I've never sailed in my life... I really, really want to though...
