Just in time to start all over again. ;)

Very true, the first thing I did when I got the shop clean was pull my truck in to work on the steering box, it had rained, I had driven it to town, it was covered in mud. :(

In other news I have gotten no news from the machine shop on my engine.

Thanks for that. :( The only experience I've had with them before was some machine work on a set of SBC heads and they were done in a week. That or I completely forgot how long it took.

JB: I know you've torn apart and put back together more engines last year than I have in my almost 64 years above ground so thanks for sharing. that said I know things usually never go as planned, cost more than budgeted usually and always seem to have a bump or two in the road to get to the finish line, but ou are doing well.

here's to another great year for you and your family in 2020 and I hope I can make time to keep watching and learning and maybe add a line or two of inspiration while i'm here.

cheers!!

Thank you for that Drives! I don't think I've ever finished a project and said "Wow that went way quicker and was much cheaper than I planned." Okay well maybe I have but not nearly often enough.

I hope you and yours have a great one as well, here is to next year.

I promised photos to prove I was actually doing something and I did actually remember to take some. One of my wife's christmas gifts was a winch plate to mount the Warn M8000 winch on her pink Jeep, I managed to get it installed:
attachment.php

Sadly it doesn't work, I did use it this past summer so it will work but isn't right now. After lots of troubleshooting I think I'm fighting multiple problems, the relay pack isn't tripping correctly and when bypassed the motor in the winch doesn't turn still. I'm putting off working on it for a bit longer to focus on other stuff first.

While installing the winch I decided to take the rusted chrome grills off of the headlights as neither of us were big fans of it. I ended up having to buy new retainer rings but I like it much better:
attachment.php

I have been fighting loose steering on my duramax pretty much since purchasing it and as of now everything from the power steering pump to the tie rod ends have been replaced. I even installed the Cognito braces and it was still loose. I came to the conclusion the gear box was the culprit. Luckily when I bought it I got the one with a lifetime warranty so I did a quick remove and replace but this is the only photo evidence I have:
attachment.php

I know exciting right! I haven't driven it to know if it solved the issues but I'm not confident it is. I'm growing increasingly frustrated with this issue and would really like it to just work.

I used it to pull the JD 4010 into the shop so I can try to get it started, that is tough with just me getting in and out of the truck 20 times to turn the steering wheel, but I got it in eventually.
attachment.php

Here is a cool trick I picked up but can't remember from who. You take one good battery and use jumper cables from it to the dead battery and hook a charger up to it. Sometimes it'll bring the dead battery back to life and I've successfully done that a couple of times, I have it on a trickle charger now and will see if it saves it or if I have to just pay to get a new one.

JB: I saw that you noticed Andy is back posting so 2020 is starting off great. you are also into so many projects it's hard to keep track, but thought i'd post and give you my 2 cents.

while you have the winch off how about painting it and your bride's Jeep's bumber WHITE?

ok i didn't mean to make more work for you, but since you'll have a cool Cobra I bet she loves driving that PINK JEEP just as much.

cheers

Hey JB, I feel your pain on moving your tractor by your self. I work alone and use come alongs, chains and tow straps to move non running vehicles in and out of my shop. It is easier to get them out if they are still not running by just pulling them with my truck or jeep. Pulling things on the four post lift with a come along is a hard job for me.

We have a very small yard on the side of a hill. My shop is 60X30. I don't have much room for my projects in the yard so the shop gets crowded. I gave away the carcus of a 1982 Chevy Scottsdale that I used for a donor on my 62 C10 project just to get the space back in the shop. I'm not complaining because I know how blessed I am to have these things to deal with in the first place.

When I do complain my wife just laughs and "asks me, "now how many cars and trucks do you have out there?" I don't talk about the compressor project or the old Sporster stuck in the corner or my record collection and stereo equipment that are all taking up space.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, lucky for me she likes the bumper black so it saves me some work there. :) She does enjoy driving it but doesn't very often, still more than I do my cobra though, especially right now. :lol_hitti

Great read JB. Your a busy man for sure.

I sure try not to let any grass grow under my feet. Speaking of which your hikes look like they'd be a blast.

Sure thing bored, it starts on page 43, link below, and goes on for a few pages mixed in with everything else. Good luck with the project if he decides to go that way.

Have you considered an electric winch? They have 120v versions that would save you some trouble. Speaking of that I should probably get one for the same reason. One of my personal rules is anything in the yard has to run, that helps minimize the amount of projects I can have on hand. It doesn't help when I have such a big shop though.

I was talking to my wife about a vehicle and asked if I could get it and her response was "Does it really matter what I say, if you want it bad enough you'll get it anyway." She kinda has a point, most of the time I just don't ask.

That battery trick also works if you have a stupid charger that will not start unless it picks up sufficient voltage from the battery.

Very true, I think that is where I initially heard of it. You do have to then re-charge the living battery as well as the zombie battery.

All,
I won't be doing much of anything for the next bit, there was a small incident that'll take more than all of my time for the next while. I probably can't say more but this is out there with a quick search so I'll leave it at that.

Perhaps I should have read the article :headscrat It wasn't a building in the traditional sense of the word. I'll post another article that simply states it happened in a processing unit. In reality it will take time but the policy has been changed to where now I get a little more compensation for my time over 50 hours a week which I'll have 71 in the 5 days since my last day off. :) Only material was lost in the property, nothing that can't be replace with work and a check.

Prayers that all will be back to normal soon.

Vince

Thank you Vince, it will be soon enough but until then plenty of time to come up with solutions. They limit me to 14 hour days so I'm now 9 minutes from that and need to run.

JB: sorry it might be my bad cause I just saw picture of refinery on fire and was happy it wasn't your home or something else worse. as i mentioned i'm happy you are ok and also sorry it's at your place of work so hope things get back to normal soon.

maybe take a little vacation out here to the OREGON COAST with the kids and your bride and we like the winter storms maybe even more than the sunny 80 degree days down there.

or use the cash for a rainy day fund and maybe an upgrade on the Cobra or another tractor?

cheers

Wow, hope it gets back to normal soon.

Me too War Wagon, I would like to get the 4010 running, I might have to order some "just in case" parts so I have them ready when I get a day off.

Got ya, I see that now, I'm also glad it wasn't my home, that would not be fun in the least. We've discussed it a bit and kinda plan to take the girls on a trip to see Mickey and the princesses in Fl. Timing is undecided as my wife only has one week of vacation a year and won't get that until late summer when Florida temps are just perfect from what Bob says.

It took longer than I'd anticipated but the rainy day fund is funded and stays that way...as long as it isn't a 100 year flood. haha

I'm still kicking and things have started to finely slow down a bit. I am off tomorrow which is only my second day off since 1/2/2020. In the mean time I've worked an average of 92 hours a week, but without the days off I would have been closer to 97 hours. (Insert tired emoji)

On my one day off I tried to attack the Pink Jeep winch, originally the motor control came from these:
attachment.php

Two of the solenoids work and trip together to send electricity to the winch motor. Obviously it wasn't working so I pulled everything apart to test them out, eventually I could get them all to trip individually but couldn't get them to work together. Rather than spend $30 each to replace them I ordered a contractor to replace the whole mess, I got it installed:
attachment.php

I also made a mount bracket, mocked up for testing:
attachment.php

Only to find out...it still didn't work. :( The signals were getting to the motor, but it wasn't spinning. I was about to have to leave so I called it a day. Ended up ordering a new motor, it came in last week and I was able to get it installed after a few attempts and it now all functions normally, that is a relief, I'm now into this "free" winch $300 including the mount plate.

Before getting into the Jeep I did a pretty good cleanup effort and was pleased enough with the results I made another mess. I pulled the battery out of the 4010 and took it in for a replacement. New batter in position, but the new plugs, wires, points, etc. didn't arrive so I had to put that one on hold.

Last thing for the day I was looking through marketplace on the book of faces and this little guy followed me home:
attachment.php

Slightly wrecked 1997 Honda CBR 600, I have a lot of the plastics but don't plan to ever install them again. I did get it started and it runs well which is what I was really concerned about. I don't need a motorcycle and won't ever ride this one, can anyone guess what I'll do with it?

Is someone making a CBR 600 powered toy for Waynoka, or local shenanigans?

Perhaps, but what is Waynoka and why haven't I heard of it before?

Oh please tell me it’s going to be a go cart!!!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I can tell you that, but sadly it would be inaccurate. For some reason the common vernacular in the that circle is go kart rather than cart but personally I like cart better. I guess I could say I'm putting the cart before the horsepower. :lol_hitti

is it going in a yellow ****** ZX2?

Nope, the yellow car is actually making more power than this engine by a little bit, doesn't rev as high though.

JB: since MATH is in your name are you sure you posted your weekly work hours correctly at 92? that's over 12 hours a day if you worked 7 days, but you said you took a day off?

was some of that repairing damage from the explosion?

good to see you figured out the issue on your FREE winch.

bike project into a Kart sounds like fun. would you (or the girls) be able to ride it on your property or is that road in front of your house not too busy?

cheers and hope you are having a great week.

Check out the dunes at Waynoka, lots of activities take place there, I have a buddy that goes to the Rattle Snake Roundup or whatever every year with his RZR.

I was correct in the hours Drives, I had one 97 hour week, an 84 hour week where I had to take a day off, then another 95 hour week, I had to leave early one day. I have a 6 o'clock meeting am and pm that takes some prep work and post work so it adds up fast. There wasn't an explosion thank goodness, just a fire and the resulting repair work as to be expected from the news article previously mentioned.

We will be able to ride it around the house, I'll post some photos later, but is capible of some slight off road work. The road in front of our house is pretty slow normally just a few cars a day.

Building a gas powered blender??

This reminds me of the Top Gear skit on Will it Blend.

After reading that name I realized what you were talking about, we actually went there yesterday in the two Jeeps and the girls had a blast. It was a wonderful day for it, low 70's and very little wind.

Drifting car for the kids.

Good to see you back.

More of a drifting car for me but they can ride it too. :)

I had a good amount of time to play around over the past few days, here is the go kart in question:
attachment.php

My cousin used to work for the company around 20 years ago now and was able to get this for my brothers and I for free to use as durability test. So you give a two seat go kart to 6 boys most of which were teenagers and say I'll give you all of the parts you need... you all know how that ended.

Well it had been sitting for a while now that we are all out and on our own so I brought it home a few years ago and decided now was a good time to break into it.:headscrat

This doesn't look adequate to me:
attachment.php

Gonna be a tight fit, but a lot of work ahead:
attachment.php

600cc engine finely letting go of the frame:
attachment.php

I had to reconfigure the axle center-line back almost 20 inches, part of that was adding 13" to the length of that part of the sub-frame. I'm using mostly 1" x 2" x 1/8" (25mm x 50mm x 3mm) tubing to make the changes which is thicker wall but slightly different than the original parts but seems to work okay. I clean all weld locations to bare metal, bevel all **** welds, tack, then weld fully. Here is one of mine compared to an original:
attachment.php

I have the engine fully supported by the frame but ran out of argon before I could finish it out. I need to figure out some stuff for the sprockets but it is looking good all in all so far. Here is about where I left it off at:
attachment.php

.

Oh this is going to be fun!:bounce:

Que maniacal laughter...

Looks like some fun times coming up.

Vince

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! So sweet! :bounce:

Not surprised about it going into a cart. I was hoping for a Tim Taylor lawn mower though! LOL

Wow, lots of good response, thanks for that guys, it ought to be a blast as long as I don't end up with broken body parts. I have a full bottle of argon and have everything welded out on the frame now, I need to add one more set of tabs when I put the engine back on, then it is time to mount things like the radiator, coils etc then it'll be time to install it all on the cart.
