Glad it wasn't something expensive, just time. You should be glad you were doing the work yourself or it would cost a small fortune to have a paid mechanic to do it.

Bugthug,
Email received and I replied back to you. Yes that would have been a hefty bill, the last time I had to have an engine pulled in this car just the labor was $400 and he said he cut me a break because I was a poor college kid. I just need to find some people willing to pay me to do that for their cars and I'll be rich LOL.

I had a chance to take apart the old engine this morning. I know I said I was going to be cleaning, but darn it I couldn't just let it set there starring at me asking me to take it apart and find the problem. This is the first engine I've ever trashed, I've driven ~300,000 miles (~482,803.2 km) in my short driving career. I don't take it easy on most of my vehicles until here recently and this was actually the first one I only red-lined once. (Right before it junked itself, coincidence? I think not. LOL)

Here is the front cam bearing on the exhaust side:
attachment.php

Not the worst bearing I've seen come from an engine, but it still didn't want to turn very easy. The crank still wouldn't turn on its own so I removed the main bearings, all of them had some wear and scoring but not as bad as the cam bearing. However, the engine still wouldn't turn over even with a 2' (61.96cm) breaker bar. I wiggled the rod bearings and none were loose but 3 of the 4 could wiggle side to side slightly. That means one wouldn't move at all. I pulled the rod end off to find this:
attachment.php

Here is another view:
attachment.php

And one blown up:
attachment.php

That ladies and gentlemen is a spun rod bearing. So this motor is trash, with all of the damage it isn't worth rebuilding. I'll try selling some of the parts and scrap the rest. There is a good amount of aluminum on the engine that will make me a few bucks back.
JB

P.S.
I think I need to make a task list to give myself an idea on how much work I have in front of me and about how long I think it'll take to complete each task. I like having work lists in front of me.

I've been working little by little on a big cleanup effort for this mess I call the Warthog Hidey Hole, I've hauled off one load of scrap metal including the old engine parts from the yellow car, lots of window and door frames, and just junk from around the farm, and one more load to go. I'm trying to also organize the massive piles of lath into one consolidated pile that won't actually sit on the floor and burning lots of the smaller pieces. When that is done I'll post pictures of it, but it is nasty, sweaty, and dirty work that I just don't like doing. The piles are full of dirt, grass, horse manure, mice droppings, and even some dead mice.

I did work on a little project for my father this weekend, this is the safety bar for his weight rack:
attachment.php

As you can see it is really short and not of much use. He gave me an old weight bar that I sacrificed to make them longer and came up with this:
attachment.php

It is now 20" long total rather than just 12" and is solid bar rather than thin walled pipe.

On the property side I've been running around like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. We had a big wind storm that knocked down a few limbs. I used that as an opportunity to buy a chainsaw with some refund money and it is awesome to finely have one rather than a battery powered sawzall. While that was burning I moved a lot of other piles of wood and old fence posts to burn as well as took down some other low limbs and a few annoying trees. Pulled a few stumps and telephone posts used in a corral. I also tried to find a water leak in the pasture area. That didn't go over so well as now I have two giant holes filled with water and still haven't found the leak or how to cap it off. GRRRRR! Oh well all part of the fun right?

A little catching up to do here, first off I didn't mention it before but our second dog Charlie a black and tan **** hound is a wanderer. He loves to run and chase stuff and being in the country is great for that, but sometimes he doesn't come home every night. Well last week Charlie wondered off and didn't come home after a few days we figured he was history and couldn't find him. (That is part of living in the country sometimes dogs just disappear and it stink majorly but that is part of life.) Well he showed up last night after being gone for a week extremely skinny and limping. Turns out he was most likely hit by something and has a few bad fractures in his pelvis and some on his right leg. He is in surgery as I type this, crossing my fingers he will be okay, but if he survived for a week without food and being hit he is tough enough to make it out okay. I think his days of 10 mile runs with me are over for a while though. Here is was this morning before we could get to the vets office:
attachment.php

This is the new addition to the family, a rescue named Koda:
attachment.php

He is half lab and half boxer, he is super sweet and is helping with the recent loss of Bubba our last lab.

I'd now like to shout out to Herb aka Bugthug, I was able to borrow some scaffolding from him for a few days to install the last of the lights in The Warthog Hidey Hole. Here are the before and after the recent addition:
Before:
attachment.php

After:
attachment.php

The lights from the top of the scaffolding:
attachment.php

I now have 36 4' 4 bulb fixtures for a total of 144 bulbs in this building. It is a little brighter but I'm at the point of diminishing returns now so I don't think I'll do anything more than task lighting around the bench. Best part of all is I already had everything for this so it only cost me time.

I'm still working on cleaning up which you can't tell from the pictures, but hopefully after this weekend I'll have made some real progress I can share with ya'll.

that is such a bummer about both dogs. hope Charlie heals up ok. we had the opposite problem with dogs when we had a farm. people would drive by and dump their unwanted ones near our place. one time we had a beautiful red setter. well somebody dumped their shepard and those teamed up and attacked our sheep. both had to go after that-couldn't trust them.

Thanks, for the shout out. You're welcome.
Hope the dog comes out OK. Broken pelvis is very painful and hard to mend. I see a big vet bill in your future.
Gad you got all your lights up. Whats the deal on that big spool of wire? Where did you get that?

Madoc1,
We used to have the same problem at my parents place, we would have 2-3 dogs then in a month we'd have 6. Some wouldn't make it long if they attacked our animals and others would get hit and the process would start over again. We live far enough out now that they get dumped closer to town. I guess people are too lazy to drive this far out to dump dogs LOL.

Bugthug,
It was very painful for him and the Dr. couldn't get to the surgery until today, but has kept Charlie on pain meds all weekend, so we will see how it goes. I'm sure it'll be expensive and I have never spent this much on an animal before, but after he go hit he took 7 days to get back home because he knew we would take care of him. I just can't let him down for that kind of loyalty and dedication. However that will mean putting off other stuff for a little while.
That is a spool of romex(?) 12-2 wire I picked up from lowes, it was a 1,000' (304.8M) role for around $300 after discount and taxes. I figured with all of the wiring I'd be doing I might as well go ahead and get the big spool as it is much cheaper than buying the smaller rolls.

All,
Cleaning continues, I've got all of the lath sorted and stacked in the lean two section, that was a nasty dirty dusty sweaty mess. It was covered in dust, horse manure, mouse/rat droppings, and dead mice. I even found one snake, and I'm sure I scared others off. But it is finely done and I can move on to more cleaning and organizing now. Pictures to follow when I'm further along.

First of all a quick update on Charlie, he made it through his surgery just fine and is doing much better now. He will need to be in a kennel for 6-12 weeks only to come out to use the bathroom and eat/drink. The hardest part is he wants to get out and play but can't as he might cause damage to the repaired areas. He ended up with a plate, 5 screws, 9 staples, and lots of stitches. It isn't a perfect repair, but the Dr. said he should be able to run with me again if it heals as it should. He is a picture of him from this weekend:
attachment.php

Next onto the cleanup and organization I've been undertaking. I took the lath from 3 piles like this:
attachment.php

To one stack like this:
attachment.php

attachment.php

There was so much nasty mixed with that wood that I don't want to think about doing that again. I'd be black from all of the stuff that was all over me. I did wear a respirator and goggles and still managed one minor eye infection from it. I've gotten a lot of those working with that wood and believe it is from the rat/mouse "stuff" all over it. I ended up burning a pile about half that size of all of the shorter pieces I didn't see the need to keep.

Lastly I was able to get a pretty good chunk of time this weekend to finish the T.B.W. (The Berline Wall) this weekend. I installed the last 16' (4.88M) of wall and wired the last 7 outlets into the proper breakers:
attachment.php

You can see the shop cat and the newest helper Koda out there enjoying the clean floor.

attachment.php

The best part is I only have $12 into the new material for the wall and outlets after using some discounts and the money from scrapping some of the junk from around this place. :3gears:

Sadly it didn't stay clean for long, I finished putting everything away and swept just in time to pull out more stuff to work on a baby gate for the stairs. I'm using some leftover one by material to make a parallelogram gate that will swing and twist to align with the stair angle. Hard to describe, but it should be pretty interesting and functional once complete.

That is all for now, keep moving forward,
JB

Really enjoy your thread and the photos of your progress! Happy to see Charlie pulled through his vet visit. Hope all goes well and he is his old self soon.

We live out in the country as well and there are a lot of cattle and horses in the large properties behind us. Our dogs will occassionally wonder in there. The problem is that it is open season on dogs chasing livestock which scares the heck out of me. Thankfully, they don't seem to want to chase the livestock. It is also Open Range here, so if you hit a cow on the road...you bought it...the cow that is.

Keep up the good work!

Zepher,
Thanks for reading over this rambling thread of mine. I've seen some of the work you've done on those old military vehicles and your collection and am very impressed with it. I read your thread about the time Bubba died and I tried finding a dog like yours but couldn't find any in my area that were reasonably priced (read that as free). I'm glad Charlie is making a recovery, but it will be a long road that is for sure.

My brother had a dog at my parents place that chased the neighbors goats and was shot with a shotgun. About 3 weeks later he came home with some pellets in his face but okay otherwise. Than when the brother brought him to Oklahoma he was shot again in the face for an unknown reason. Messed up one eye a little bit, but recovered and is doing fine again. Maybe he will learn his lesson, but so far is one tough pup.

Thanks Baz and Taumac, it really needed to happen and it is much nicer in there now. I have a lot of stuff out still that needs to find a home. I have a plan to build some storage cabinets that will match the R.M.P.S.F.B. (Rugged Multi-Purpose Sixteen Foot Bench). However, the materials alone are not free, but I'd gain 384 ft^3 (10.87m^3) of storage space with 192ft^2 (17.83m^2) of shelf space. In due time I suppose, I have other projects that are cheap/free that I need to tackle before then.

I picked up a trailer last week, a friend and I went in on it and got it for a GREAT price. I dipped into my insurance settlement from when my truck was hit again to make it happen, but I've needed a trailer a few times and am happy to not have to beg others to borrow theirs. It is a 16' (4.88m) "car" trailer with some hella stout ramps. It will need some reinforcement before I haul anything like and old John Deere Model B, but is fine for smaller lighter cars for now.

I did some welding it in a few places, added a second safety chain, redid the grounds on the wiring, and repacked the bearings. Other than that it was great, it has new trailer tires that are less than a year old, new bed wood, new wiring and lights, and was just painted. I was just in the right place at the right time when someone needed money. WooHoo

Sadly no pictures, but it is up and running like a champ now with everything working as it should.

It has been far too long since I've last updated this thread and actually had something to show. It is I'm sure very apparent I use a camera phone and the pictures are terrible, but that is just the way it is sadly and I apologize for the quality.

The first project that I need to show is the B.A.T.S. (Baby Anti-Tumbling System). It is easy to put a baby gate on places where there is a flat spot on both sides like a hall or a door frame, but what about the base of stairs that don't have flat and parallel mounting points? That is where the B.A.T.S comes in, a gate that will be built specifically for this application. Here is the design:
attachment.php

It is a gate that will open away from the stairs, or toward the stairs and parallelogram up to the angle of the stairs. I used all old flooring hardwood that needed a lot of cleaning and sanding prior to finishing. The only fasteners are used to mount it on the wall and the latch on the banister. All of the pivots are 3/8" (~1cm) oak dowel rods friction fit into the spindles and the holes in the top and bottom rails. Those are made up of 3 pieces with the outer two being the same size and the inner piece basically only a spacer. Lots of words, now onto pictures:
attachment.php

attachment.php

This was the test fit stage after some clearancing. I still need to remove it and finish the finish on the parts I had to modify. (Measure twice, cut once, or as I do measure once, design once, cut once, finish once, try to install once, curse once, cut again, finish again, install again, and have a cold drink to cool off.)

The other thing taking up some time has been the yard, we've gotten lots of rain this year and I'm mowing every week. When I mow I'll have to go around some parts of the yard I didn't get cleared earlier and it doesn't make sense to mow around yard I could take back and give me a more square yard. So I started off working in this area:
attachment.php

It was over grown when we bought this place and has just gotten worse. Rather than let it get too out of hand I decided to tackle it now. First a machete to knock down some ragweed and find the trees I didn't want to mow or cut down. Then I used the mower to knock down the remainder of the weeds and grass. Lastly I went to town with the chainsaw cutting the small trees out and the low limbs.

This is the end result:
attachment.php

I still need to go back and burn it off once it dries out then I'll probably just let the grass grow but may end up seeding it before winter. I found a few interesting things, a huge wasp nest in the middle of the grass (luckily I saw it before they were upset with me), a few metal fence posts, some roofing tin, and mattress springs that I had no idea was there because it was so overgrown and under a tree.

This is the other area I tackled:
attachment.php

After:
attachment.php

However, I ran out of steam before I could cut down the trees and go any further north, but it is a good start at least.
Next I'll introduce to you the F.P.T.
JB

The F.P.T. or Fraternity Proof Table is just that, a table that is strong enough to survive in a fraternity at least for a few years. I talked to a high quality furniture salesman a while back about upgrading the furniture in the fraternity I was a member of in college. He talked about the harshest environments for his furniture were fraternities and fire stations, go figure. Well he said anything that would last there needed to have metal lots and lots of metal with wood just used as an accent.

I started on this design after seeing some really neat table legs that were designed by ChubbyChowder I believe on this forum. He made some legs for me out of 1/4" x 2" (6.4mm x 50mm) steel bar stock (no pictures of them yet). I then found a saw mill near me that would cut whatever size I wanted depending on the logs they had available. I could do an entire post on their setup but didn't take any photos so I'll have to do that later if/when I go back.

I had them cut these for me:
attachment.php

The one on the right is for the F.P.T. and measures 7' 5.5" x 25.75" x 2" (~2m x .65m x 5cm) and is about 130 pounds (~60kg) of red oak.
The one on the left is for the C.M.B. (Cabinet makers bench and is 8' x 17" x 2" (~2.4m x 43cm x 5cm) and is about 120 pounds (~55kg) also red oak.

I put casters on my F.B.B.f.a.F.S.S. (Free Bench Build from a Former Swing Set) to make it into a P.F.B.B.f.a.F.S.S. (Portable Free Bench Build from a Former Swing Set) then wheeled it over to start working on it:
attachment.php

Lots of splits I'll have to work around and strengthen as best I can:
attachment.php

But also lots of character:
attachment.php

I cut a 4.5' (~1.4m) radius in a piece of scrap plywood so I could use my router to cut the ends taking about 3/16" (~5mm) of material out per pass to give the ends a nice curved finish:
attachment.php

I then attacked it with a 40 grit belt sander for a few hours then moved to 80 and 120 before working up to 320 grit:
attachment.php

attachment.php

Like I said lots of character and I'm now ready to add my design, buy lots of steel for further reinforcement and have this thing delivered to my brothers in time for their 50th anniversary celebration this fall. Lots to do, but one little bit at a time and it'll get there if I just keep moving forward.
JB

FYI pictures of the baby gate aren't loading for me but the rest did

Dragoonmc,
Thank you for the heads up, hopefully they work now. Also thank you for having taking a look at my thread. Did you end up getting that drill press? As you have seen I have no shortage of them presently but they all need some attention to perform at their peak.

I'm sure there are others out there that read along and don't comment much or at all but I'd love to hear from everyone be that praise or criticism.

JB I'm really envious of your place. No way I'd ever be able to afford something like that around here.
10 years time when I retire it might be possible if I relocate, as planned, to Scotland.

Slammed,
Thank you for the kind words, I know over in most of Europe it seems like land and even homes for that matter are a hot commodity and having space is a huge luxury! Luckily around here at least land is still reasonable and running in the $3,000/acre range with mineral rights. (If you are not familiar with those basically if they strike oil on your land, or near it you will get a few extra dollars when they are pumping it. There is a well on our land that if they start pumping again we will get about $300 a year for our portion.) Where my parents live the farm land is much better and they get closer to $8,000 an acre.

I don't take this for granted and am doing all I can to keep it looking respectable, and eventually I'll get there. One thing I didn't think about before moving back out of town where the stars, I can see tons more here than I did in town it makes for some amazing views.

Thank you for the kind words and for reading my wordy thread, I'll do what I can to entertain everyone. As far at the M.L.A.'s (Multi-Letter Acronyms) I'll try to explain them if they haven't been used recently but I probably should put an index together for them. My next request is if you do have a slammed custom please post a picture of it up here, I'd love to see it.

Baz,
That would be awesome for you to be able to get some extra land to spread out on, I love having it but need to figure something out so I don't have to do so much mowing every week. Scotland is on my bucket list of places I'd like to see eventually, but there are also many places in the US I'd like to see before then. Thanks for reading over this thread and keep up the work on your place, it is looking fantastic.

I enjoyed reading through your thread. Thanks for sharing your updates. Love the Cobra and the work you're doing in/to your hidey hole. When you posted that picture and asked what was missing, I thought you were going to say you sold the Cobra. :willy_nil

My grandpa called his barn the hidey hole too, but it was because it had a cellar in it for tornadoes. Nice to find a fellow Okie on GJ too.

jbrentd,
Nice to see another Okie as well as another JB, there are a few other Okies on here but not many. We could even adopt bugthug as he is about 15 miles from Oklahoma inside Kansas. Oh no I'll not be selling the cobra anytime soon, it may not get much attention, but it just relaxes in the house garage and waits patiently for its turn. Thank you for taking the time to read over this thread, I appreciate hearing from others and knowing people are reading this from around the US and now world.

looking good jb. if you are intent on keeping all the 5 acres looking like a lawn, you may want to save up some scheckels and get yourself either a tractor with a shredder or a belly mower. I have a friend that keeps about 5 of his 10 acres looking good with a Kubota commercial mower. it has about a 5' cutting width and rear steer. that thing gets it done in a hurry. anyway, good luck and send us some of your rain!

p.s. your shop space is looking better and better.

thanks for the reply JB

I spent some time out in Oklahoma a few years back, I was tornado chasing at the time and we went up n down that alley many times. one thing that did strike me was the size and space. coming from a small country where you never more than 2 minutes from someone it was awesome to find somewhere I could drive for hours and never see another being. truly loved it and the sky felt so much bigger, felt like I could actually breathe!
3k an acre!!! where do I sign! im just on the outskirts of London and the average price of a home is £500.000. that's average for a small house or flat with not enough room to swing a cat! 1 room flats can be £250k its all kinda crazy!

anyway like I said im just enjoying watching you making the place your own. recycling and reusing always makes for something unique. its great to get the back story too such as the car issues, doing stuff with your family etc. ive got a 23mth old myself and she is my world. she is also just starting to" help" daddy in the garage. the other day she drew along the side of a project car that was in final primer:willy_nil
but they make you see the world different for sure. anyway enough rambling.

regarding the "slammedkustom" moniker. it was my business name when I had my garage and although I built a fair amount of "slammedkustoms" an aging back and joint problems mean my own cars have slowly been raising up. the roads in the uk are terrible and make it hard work and tiring. but since you asked here are 2 of my current stable.

Jim, I don't plan to cut too much more from the last photo of the work I'd done this past weekend I'll only be mowing another 50 or so feet up to the basic tree line and creek. The mower I have will mow at about 7 mph if the ground were smooth, as it is I'm bouncing off going that speed so I have to take it a little slower for some parts. As it stands it takes about 3 hours when the grass isn't growing like crazy, but lately it has taken closer to 4. I appreciate the comments on the place, it is slowly moving toward my vision, but it'll take a few more years to be where I'd like it to be.

Slammed,
It is intersting to me people will come to Oklahoma from all over the world to try and see a tornado up close. I've been fortunate to never be too close to one, I did get to see one drop down then go right back up that couldn't have been more than a couple of miles from the field I was working in at the time. The smaller ones can be cool, but the big ones are very scary to me. But I know I'm 3 times more likely to die from an air travel accident than I am from a tornado doesn't make me really fear them in the sense that I'll run to the basement whenever a storm pops up. I love my little girls to bits and will do anything I can to make them happy, but I'm sure I'd be peeved if they decided to paint daddy's car for me.

Those VW's are awesome, I've had a soft spot for air cooled VW's for a while now and am sure one day I'll end up with one or 12 of them. Keep up the great work and get a thread started so I can see what you are up to.

Slammed, When you do start the thread post a link here or add it to your signature, I'm sure others as well as myself would like to see more of your creations and shop. I've luckily "solved" the space problems for the time being, but I'm sure eventually I'll be in the same boat.
I brought the cobra with me to work today and it was a blast, I don't drive it as much as I would like, but that makes it that much more fun when I do.

All,
I picked up the steel for the F.P.T. yesterday, all I can say right now is this is going to be one heavy sucker! I'm estimating it'll be around 250 lbs (114kg), at least I know it won't get moved around too often.
Also I am expecting a very large delivery tomorrow...

Bugthug, you are correct, my aunt and uncle decided to bring it down and make this weekend a mini vacation. Here are a couple of pictures of it:

It even came with the original owners manual my great grandfather first read in the spring of 1947. I had a bit of a surreal moment when I read it yesterday thinking about that.

On the the bad news, it won't start, my grandfather would just pull/push start it as the battery was dead, I'm charging that now, but it still wouldn't start for them. It had been power washed at some point in the past few weeks and someone told them the magneto can't be power washed. I haven't tried anything yet but wanted to toss that out to see in anyone had suggestions. Now time to go play before work.

Sent from my bag phone.

That's great. Not only its a John Deere tractor, its in very good condition. Don't sound like it will take much to get it going under its own capabilities. Too bad you didn't have time to talk to some of the old timers down at the K&O gas and steam show, I know someone there probably has the answer for you. Are you just going to use it to ride around on?, or are you going to make it work?
That sure is a good weekend for you.

now that's what I was talking about! keep your eye on craigs list for a shredder ( bush hog ) and you will be all set. I am sure it has a pto, but does it have 3 point hydraulic lift also? I think you mentioned it in the past, but what model is it? you might want to check out MY TRACTOR FORUM. good info.
