That is a nice tractor you got. I'm jealous.

I really want a JD, my father drove one on the farm when I was young.

Someday I'll get one.

Very cool that you'll have this around, especially since it comes with some memories of your grandfather too.

JBrentd,
I apologize if I insinuated my grandfather (where this tractor came from) has passed away, but he is alive and well along with my grandmother on my mothers side. They are both around 80 and very active and still "work" around their farm even. My other grandmother on my fathers side is 88 and walks 3 miles everyday, but her eyesight is slowly going. My grandfather where the anvil and a few other of my tools came from passed away in 2004 though so I'm sure there was confusion.

That's great. Not only its a John Deere tractor, its in very good condition. Don't sound like it will take much to get it going under its own capabilities. Too bad you didn't have time to talk to some of the old timers down at the K&O gas and steam show, I know someone there probably has the answer for you. Are you just going to use it to ride around on?, or are you going to make it work?
That sure is a good weekend for you.

Bugthug,
I agree, I've been a fan of JD for a long time but just haven't ever owned one. I'm kicking myself for not being able to make it but I put in a half day both Saturday and Sunday at work and still managed to get almost 70 hours in last week. I plan to get it running to do some easy work, but not a workhorse. Eventually when I get a tractor with a bucket I'll restore this one and it'll just be a show/parade queen.

Oh man the JD is really cool, I wish I had the space for a vintage tractor

Sunbimmer,
You changed your profile picture, that is usually how I remember one person from another as I'm terrible with names. I'm very fortunate to have the space for it, I had the tractor, my uncles 20' (~6m) trailer in the main bay of the Worthog Hidey Hole and still had plenty of room to do some more work on the F.P.T.

now that's what I was talking about! keep your eye on craigs list for a shredder ( bush hog ) and you will be all set. I am sure it has a pto, but does it have 3 point hydraulic lift also? I think you mentioned it in the past, but what model is it? you might want to check out MY TRACTOR FORUM. good info.

jim

Jim,
Yes it does have a PTO and a hydraulic 3 point hitch just no bars attached at the moment. My brothers father-in-law around Tulsa has a 5' bush hog (rotary mower is what JD calls it I believe) he is selling that I'll pick up at some point, and that'll make my yard cleanup much easier.

It is a 1947 John Deere Model B known as the Late Styled Model B as it has a larger 2.4 liter 2-cylinder gas engine with a whopping 26hp. In the paper work my grandfather sent with it there are receipts for the work he had done to it a couple years ago including a .125" (3.175mm) overbore, all new bearings and re-machined cylinder head. Along with new tires and some other misc. stuff.

All,

The saga of trying to get it to run continues. When the work was done last they replaced the 6v batter with an 8v one. I've heard of old hot roders and farmers doing this when the 6v just didn't have the guts to get the tractor to turn over. I don't have an 8v charger, and haven't been able to find a place near by that can test or charge it so far. I have it hooked up to a 6v charger that has it at 8.75 volts now and it will turn the engine over, but it still won't start. (I've heard I could put a properly sized resistor in line and use a 12v charger that will drop the voltage down some, but don't want to try anything too drastic just yet. I'll probably just buy a new 6v battery anyway as that is what JD designed to tractor to use.) I've checked the plugs and cleaned them, when I pulled the boot off of one of the plugs I could see a little spark and smelled fuel on them, so now I'm back to square one I guess. I'll try cleaning the grounds to see if that will help it turn over easier but I'm not going to commit too much time to it just yet as I have to get the F.P.T. done before my turnaround really kicks into high gear in mid September.

T_R,
I don't know if I've seen you post on here before, but welcome either way and thank you for posting in my thread. This is my first JD and I'm sure it won't be my last, just like always seeing my grandfathers driving red Chevy trucks like I have now, I always saw them and my father on JD tractors and now I have one too.

Slammed,
I'm walking in tall cotton that is for sure. (Interesting side note: I didn't know cotton was ever "tall" I'd normally seen it in the 3'-4' ( 1-1.3m) range but if you don't spray it to stunt its growth it'll get up around 7' (2.3m) tall or so, that is walking in tall cotton.) I'm not much of a straw hat wearer, but have an old hat that has been around with me for a while that is very well worn and comfortable. When I work I usually were some old stained jeans and a cutoff shirt because I hate sleeves. :lol_hitti I prefer the term redneck as we don't have many hills around here or where I grew up. Or as Bo and Luck Duke said in the new Dukes of Hazard movie Appalachian American.

Sweet B model...I'd like to get one myself one day - with that pulley I could run a line shaft and get some old belt driven tools.

One tip for starting a 6v vehicle:

I had a dead 6v battery on my old Jeep for a few years...didn't buy a new battery cause it wasn't really road worthy. So I just jumped it off my truck. Make sure the vehicle you're using to jump is NOT running (staying closer to 12v instead of 14V when running) and you should be fine. Sure starts a lot faster! Oh...and don't leave the jumpers connected any longer than you need to get it cranked over...don't wanna fry a coil or anything.

Mike,
I'll keep it updated when progress is made, but it is slow going now as I only have about an hour out there every day and I won't get anything done from mid-September to late-October as I'll be working a shutdown at work, I'll probably be pushing around 100 hours a week for 6 weeks or more. Oh and no overtime for me. :(

Fergus,
Thanks for the tip, I have a little Cobra 7500 jump pack that produces 400 amps at 12v. (I'm sure it is more than 12, but the specs didn't say in my quick search.) I used it for about 5 seconds and it didn't start so I pulled it off, like you said I don't want to fry anything.

Don

Don,
Thanks for taking some time out of your busy schedule to check out my thread, you have plenty going on in your own life as I'm sure others do as well and I really appreciate it.

The loss of Bubba was and is a little tough at times, as you are well aware. However, the new lab/boxer Koda is helping out and has become an excellent running partner as he is now faster than me even up to my 8 mile runs. Also Charlie the Black and Tan is recovering and will go in for a followup next week to see if he is ready to be taken out of the kennel.

The old tools and equipment are nice to get to use and are making it easier to build stuff in the Hidey Hole. I seem to go in spurts of working on and in the shed so I don't spend too long working on one single project to the point of being burned out.

All,
I'll have an update in a couple of days one the F.P.T., it is making great progress but I'll be cutting it close as the frame will need 53 pilot holes, 53 full size holes, then 53 taps run through it, a little welding and grinding, then I'll be taking it in for powder coating. While there I'll finish the design on the top and should have some down time to work on the Ole B.

I have a quick little update for ya'll on the F.P.T. I dropped off the metal last week to have it powder coated and it might be another week before I get it back. Sadly I only took this one picture:
attachment.php

This is the setup I was using for drilling the full size holes prior to the 53 taps I had to do. There is one place on where the legs, the under table support bars and the angle iron trim all meet so I have to go through 1/4" (6.4mm) of metal, 1.5" (3.8cm) of wood, the other 1/4" of the leg, the 1/4" of support bar, then finely to the tapped hole on the 1/4" thick angle iron trim. Lots and LOTS of holes were drilled for a pilot, full size drill, then a few oversize drilled to make assembly easier.

I used the router to make channels in the bottom of the table top for the support bars to set in, then again to round over all of the corners, then used the template shown earlier to make the letters in the red oak slab.
Here it is mostly prior to all of the poly going on:
attachment.php

I'm not using any stain on this as I don't really think it needs any.

Here it is after the first coat of poly:
attachment.php

I also picked up this little gem (?) for a steal, another right place at the right time deal:
attachment.php

It is a Jet BD 920N, not the kind of machine I really want in the long run, but will be handy for making small parts work in the short term. It has a capacity of 9" (22.9cm) diameter by 20" (50.8cm) long, and it came with all of the tooling I'll need for the time being. I played around on it a bit yesterday and turned the little insert down for my father that goes into a flare pistol so it can shoot 12 ga. flares.
attachment.php

That is all for now, have a good day ya'll.
JB

Where did you get the Jet lathe? I seen one at a auction I kindda wish I would of bought. They had a full size lathe that went dirt *** cheap. It had a lot of extra tooling and 3 and a 4 jaw head, it sold for $600.00. At the time I didn't have a barn or anywhere to keep it, and didn't want to risk it being out in the weather. It was in the winter and I think snow was a coming. They had a Jet lathe just like the one you have and it sold for $400.00.
What color is the point head drill press going to be? That looks like its in good condition. What does the sign mean, a sorority symbol?

Bugthug, those would have been great scores on either of those two lathes. Mine has the 3 and 4 jaw chuck, and plenty of other odds and ends.
I'm not sure on the color yeti or the drill press, it was a dark green originally, it works great for metal cutting the way it is set up so I probably won't be breaking it down anytime soon.
The symbol is Delta Tau Delta, a fraternity, college would have been different if I were in a sorority as they are all girl houses. That was the fraternity I was in during college. The people there are responsible for where I am today and why I met my wife so I figured I might as well make a table for them to play drinking games on. Lol

JB, I have some tooling for a lathe and other machines. When you get over this way again you can see if anything might be useful for you.
Guess I need to start mowing again. At least the weather has been decent for Kansas this time of the year, I'm afraid with it being this cool in August might mean for an early winter type weather.

Bugthug, Thanks for the offer, I probalby won't have a chance to come back up to visit until maybe November, but will let you know. I was able to knock out mowing yesterday, it was a nice change of pace. I'll take the cool weather, I love it between about 65-85 but am fine working outside in about 40-95. Once it gets over about 95 I'm burning up and just drip sweat. However, I'd take 100 over 30 any day of the year as I very much dislike the cold.

Sadly no real developments, but I am alive and still doing some work out in the Warthog Hidey Hole on occasion. I've been working on an insert for a flare pistol for my father that will allow him to shoot 12ga flares in a 29mm (?) flare pistol. I finely have it done and am waiting on some 12ga flares to try it out. I'm also in limbo on the F.P.T. as the hard parts are still at the powder coating shop. That is all for now, I'm getting really busy at work and will have to start coming in by 5 am so I won't get any time in there until early November. I'll try to post pictures of the table when it is done.

I missed the lathe post. Great score. Wow, that's something I was I had and had the knowledge to use. I'm guessing biggest problem is having the space to put it would be biggest issue. Can a lathe like that be used for metal and wood? I always thought there was a difference between a wood and metal lathe?

Taumac,
I'm very fortunate to have the space for the lathe and even if it isn't really very big or robust it is still capable of doing what I've asked of it so far. Now when it comes to polishing the stand pipe for my big vertical Craftsman drill press I know it won't handle it so I will have to come up with something. I think you could use it with wood, but the tooling is obviously different and they you would get saw dust in all of the places you don't want it on a "precision" metal machine. It will spin as low as 130 rpm and as high as 2,000. I don't know what speed you would need to spin wood, but would think 2,000 would be plenty depending on the outside diameter. Keep up the good work on your place.

On another note, it rained last night really hard and the shed leaked again causing water to get on the F.P.T. which in turn caused black spots all over one end of the slab even through the poly. I spent the morning sanding off 4 layers of it to start it all over and will probably have to put on a few extra coats this time. Does anyone know of a sealer I can use that will keep liquids from penetrating the finish?

Have you tried the Thompson deck water sealer? It protects all kinds of material, I think brick, concrete, wood and?? I think Wal Mart and Lowes probably has it. You might buy some silicone for the nail holes in the roof:lol:

Bugthug,
I'll have to check out the Thompson sealer, I've used it before and may even have a gallon of it left over. I figure there will at some time be "drinks" spilled on this table when I get it to the fraternity house so a sealer would be a great idea even if I fix the roof leaks. The roof will have to wait until next spring/summer sadly but if I get a few minutes this winter on a nice day I may start on it. I'm planning to remove all of the nails and install roofing screws, but I'll need thousands and thousands of them as when Mr. Arnold built this shed he or the workers were nail happy. As I do that I'll tackle the holes as I find them. There are a lot of holes I can see at night when the lights are on inside it looks like a starry sky.

That sounds like a fun job to do when you are stressed out. Just grab some screws and start replacing. The hard part will be getting the old galva nails out, without bending the barn metal:eyecrazy: that might make you more stressed out?

Bugthug,
I don't know about a stress reliever as you said it will be difficult to keep from destroying the tin also with that #@*! curved roof it'll be tough to get to parts of it on a ladder, or a ladder in a truck bed, or from standing on the roof but I'm sure I'll find a way.

Update:
A few weeks ago there was an automotive shop that was being liquidated as it was closing down, I found lots of stuff that I wanted, but only a few things I could justify at this time. I really wanted to get the 12,000 lbs (5,440 kg) two post lift they were selling, but it was just too expensive at $2,500 for a used lift. There was a lot of snap on there and if I were into those overpriced tools (my personal opinion only) I would have bought a lot more.

Here is one of the storage bin cabinets I picked up:
attachment.php

I stripped the cabinet and the fronts of all of the drawers for paint.

Working on updating the framing in the T.B.W.:
attachment.php

Installed and painted, you can see the labels I made for the drawers as well:
attachment.php

I typed them up in excel then had them laminated, if I change what is in the drawer I can flip them over and write on the other side.

You can see I put it over the HF 44 box I’d already installed in the T.B.W.:
attachment.php

Here is a close up of the labels:
attachment.php

I still have to do the other one but it will take a little longer as the handles aren’t easy to remove:
attachment.php

I was surprised it only took me about 4 hours to do all of the work for this storage bin.

Until next time, keep moving forward!

JB

stuff like that is when you wished you had a blasting cabinet. could of had those cleaned up in about a half hour. I have a cabinet like that one, almost the same color of green.
Where was the shop that closed and auctioned? in Ponca?
yeah $2500. sounds like a price for a new post lift. A place in Wichita has a 9k for $1600. and that's installed and brand new.

It was Benhams (Sp?) here in Ponca, I found out about it when I drove by so it was worth the time to stop by. I'm planning a blast cabinet built that will hopefully happen pretty soon after this turnaround is over and it'll be big. :bounce: What is the place with the lift?

JB, Go onto Wichita Craigs list and look under tools, there is a couple of people that advertise on there. The one company is on West street, and the other one I think is from Springfield, Mo. They are always going to car shows etc.

I have been able to get a couple of small things going in the Warthog Hidey Hole, I get about 5 minutes out there in the mornings before I leave for work and got a couple hours last night. I finished stripping the other set of storage bins and have them and the handles in primer and the first color coat. I also picked up the parts for the F.P.T. (Fraternity Proof Table) from the powder coating shop yesterday. It only took 5 weeks! I need to build my own blast cabinet and oven so I don't have to go back there again as they didn't turn out quite like I wanted but luckily the warts aren't where you can see them when assembled. I'll get it put together over the next couple of weeks and show pictures at that time. Little by little I'm getting things knocked out.

No pictures of anything?:(:(
I have to go back to my old powder coater, my guy died last week:(:( He was retired from the aircraft business, and had a machine shop and sandblasting/powder coating set up in his shop. He always did a nice job for me and usually had it back in a day or two. His wife had died a few months ago, so maybe he just gave up? R.I.P. David Smith.
Can't wait to see you bins all painted up.

Sorry to hear about that it is always a shame when something like that happens. Because you requested it here is the only new photo I have, I find it fitting with how some of my days have gone at work recently. e1e3108d12e49454f66feaa08895f062.jpg

Well at least the picture wasn't shaky!
I thought maybe you got the Cobra out and went to the Last Run car show? I went down for about an hour. I was looking for some Route 66 plates from Kansas. It appears that Kansas did not issue any plates about the Route 66. Its a shame they didn't have a license plate with that on it. I guess they were pissed that we only got 18 miles of it. It does seem strange to have such little bit of such a world famous road. I need to read up on why and how we came about with just the 18 miles. I bet a politician had something to do with it.:D
I did see a few Cobra's, and some other cool cars that you don't see everyday. Like a 10 door International limo truck, that thing almost had its own zip code it was so long.

Were you making fun of my picture taking skills? LOL I really do need to get a better camera, but that cuts out on money to spend on/in the shed. I did get the cobra out Saturday, but sadly only to drive it to work. I had a scary moment on the way home when a truck pulled out in front of me and stopped perpendicular to the road. I was able to get stopped inches from them but I just knew I was going to hit. I'm glad I upgraded the brakes last year or I'd have had to post pictures of a wrecked car. I'll make it to that show eventually, but didn't again this year. I saw that International a couple years ago here in Ponca and it was multicolored then have they painted it now? I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen.

I enjoy this thread. :D

Thank you for stopping by CudaChick, I try to have fun in all that I do even if that means sweating bullets out there in the summer and freezing in winter. I have some updates for ya'll I'll try to get up over the next bit.

Okay this will have to be quick. I have the other set of bins installed in the T.B.W. I had to reframe this twice, once to get it ready to install and once to actually make it fit. My pattern bit for my router lost the bearing so I had to install a larger bearing as that was the only one I had to use. that meant the OSB wasn't cut quite big enough to fit the bin in. It is done now and ready for me to put the labels in I have done.

I have the parts for the F.P.T. back from the powder coating shop and have started to install it all. I predrilled all of the holes in the table and the metal so I could just bolt it all together when I got the parts back. That didn't work out as planned.  Turns out the table top wasn’t done drying out and moving around. The slab bowed a little side to side making it about a .25” (6.35mm) narrower. That meant all of the holes in the wood will have to be enlarged to make it all fit and there will be gaps around the perimeter. So after chasing all 50 some odd threads I have to drill out about 35 holes and fit all of the SS hardware piece by piece making it take a lot of extra time. Anyhow here is where I’m at now:

All in all I enjoyed my one day off for the last two weeks. In 13 days I worked 163 hours on top of my hour worth of commute each day. I’m ready for the next month to go by so I can get back to normal again.
Keep moving forward,
JB

As you can see it is in great shape and I don't believe he even had to do any restoration work other than cleaning it up. If you get a chance you should check out his thread, he has lots of cool vintage stuff going on there.

She is beautiful one. I have two of them right now and I never realize how good of a grinder it was.

As you could probably tell those were not my pictures, they were much higher quality than I can do. I plugged it in and flipped the switch and didn't realize before how quiet grinders could actually be. I love it and haven't even used it yet.

 I have a grinder just like that one. I bought it at a auction. The guy has 3 tools on one metal platform. He has 2 Craftsman grinders and a wire brush on the other one. I need to re-mount these to another stand.

Bugthug,
If you have too many for your use feel free to just drop them by sometime. :bounce:
I might actually be interested in the stand if you decide you don't want it around.

I did get to use the grinder last night to clean up an allen wrench that had partially stripped. It worked great and was very quiet, I'll enjoy using it for a long time to come.
