Above 1200 Sq/FT The Warthog Hidey Hole

With the end of 2015 upon us and the holiday season in full swing I thought it would be a good time to wish all of you out there happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or what other festive celebration you choose to partake in be that or , just not a combination of the two please. For most of us on here we have to have a balance of family and shop time as they are the ones that graciously grant us the opportunity to follow our dreams and enjoy some of our passions:

This is also the time of you many will reflect on the changes that have occurred and what they look forward to next year. As we have been in our new home for just over a year now I feel as though it is a good time to look back first. Here is how The Warthog Hidey Hole (T.W.H.H.) began:

One of the first projects I tackled in there was to add more power and light. The feed and panel were changed to 200 amp service along with the addition of 2 more lights. This morphed into having a total of 36 4’ 4-bulb fixtures all converted from T-12’s to T-8’s:

During part of this progression I worked on and mostly completed the Keller Powered Hacksaw from the Restored 1930’s Auto Shop, all that remains is finding a proper motor that is period correct and restoring it to go along with this hacksaw:

Next really came a slew of woodworking projects, the first were the tables made from lath for my wife:

Then came the parallelogram baby gate for the stairs:

This is about the time I acquired the Lemon and supsequently was allowed the opportunity to pull and replace the engine, then pull the engine again to replace the crank position sensor:

I did a little work on the Cabinet Makers Bench C.M.B. also graciously gifted from Thomas from the Restored 1930’s Auto Shop. This is on the short list of projects to work on over the coming year:

I also decided to part ways with a couple of things at this time, I sold the Comet and the Handi-Ho that I’d restored:

I worked on the The Berline Wall (T.B.W.), the Rugged Multi-Purpose Sixteen Foot Bench (R.M.P.S.F.B.), covering T.B.W. and the Cabinet Over Bench Remarkable Accumulator (C.O.B.R.A.). During this build I also installed outlets every 4 feet along T.B.W., upgraded the shop stereo, and organized much of T.W.H.H.:

My uncle brought down my great-grandfathers Model B John Deere tractor that will be running in 2016 and perhaps even put to work if all goes well:

I did a little more woodworking mixed with metalworking and built the Fraternity Proof Table (F.P.T.):

The last real project that was completed was The Black Palgue, which was used to transport the 1948 Chevrolet National Hearse to the shop where I’m doing a little work to get it running again:

That wraps up the highlights from this past year and pretty much brings everyone up to date on where things are. I know at times there doesn’t seem to be much going on but I assure you I try to stay busy if at all possible. This coming year will have more tool restoration projects as I now have the following in need of attention:
3 drill presses
Craftsman table saw
4 grinders
Craftsman 6x48 belt sander, motor, and stand
4 vises, two of which are Wiltons and at least one of the others will probably go up for sale.

I have added a few hand tools and power tools to the list that were new and have made working on projects much more enjoyable. With the addition of the 2 H.F. 44” boxes and the nut and bolt storage above them on T.B.W. I’m able to get more done quicker than ever before.

On the list of things to come in 2016 that haven’t already been mentioned are:
Tall storage cabinets on the other end of T.B.W.
Hard pipe airline install phase 1 which will include restoring the two hose reels I have
Buffer and grinder workstation
Table saw out feed table and upgraded table and fence
Blackhawk Jack restoration
T.W.H.H. roof repair
Powerwheels upgrade for my daughters
Potentially a 2 post lift
Potentially a wood working room in the lean-to

That about covers it for now and I’ll have plenty to keep me busy for years to come as the long range plan I thought up has me adding insulation and heat to T.W.H.H. as well as adding a 2 car garage onto the house with a master sweet above that. Along with the possibility of adding additional garage space for storage of all of the nice cars and trucks I hope to eventually rebuild. (Hey, you have to dream right?) Until then I’ll just keep moving forward and I know I’ll eventually get there.

I did forget to put a picture of the dogs in there with us, I'll check to see what I can find. Speaking of them Charlie has recovered wonderfully from his indecent and surgery, you'd never know he has a plate and screws in his pelvis when he runs 8-10 miles with me. The saw came from Thomas up in Illinois from his Restored 1930's Auto Shop. If you are referring to this table:

I built it to donate to my fraternity from college, that is the reason there was so much thought put into adding strength. I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas as well.

I have had vacation since last Friday, however, I have been working most every day since last Friday. Yep that is right I'm using vacation just to be at work. If I don't use it I loose it so I decided to use it all by the end of the year. Turns out the same time I wanted off is the same time problems decided to creep up at work so I'm working more than I planned to, oh well.

I have managed to get everything off of the front of Bugthug's '48 Chevy and started to work on a my new toy:

This is a Craftsman model 103.0803 (?) 6"x48" belt sander that would normally have a 9" disc sander with it. I picked it up from Bagged89s10 which worked out because I've been looking for one of these for quite some time now and he happened to have a spare. I used some old barn wood to make a table for it, I ran it through my planer and then squared the sides on the table saw. All of the wood was rough cut and some had been soaked with oil at some point. I decided the best thing to do would be to then stain the rest of the wood with oil as well:

I think it turned out pretty well all in all. I used a spare 3/4hp Craftsman table saw motor to power the sander and picked up link belt as well and it runs great. I also completely disassembled the sander and cleaned it up a bit, just to get it into functional condition at this time, I plan a full restoration down the road. It cleaned up pretty nice though:

I was working on the bench and kept having to plug stuff in on a different outlet because the phone charger and stereo were taking up all of this one. I ended up cutting in an additional outlet with a junction box within the cabinet behind the speaker to plug them both into. It can't be seen in this photo, but you can tell how much cleaner everything is now:

Also you will notice the phone stand I made out of some other scraps. The phone now sets at the same angle as the speaker just to help satisfy my OCD a bit. I'm warm now so I'll head back out to get some more work knocked out shortly.

I liked the year review you did, sometikmes even when you think you haven't done much and then looking back over all you have achieved in the last year its pretty amazing. I know how hard it is with a little one and to spread your time between family time and "man" time so my hats off to you. im in the same boat there!

everytime I drop in to have a look its great to see the progress and your a man after my own heart juggling more than one project at a time, I never know if its a good thing or a bad thing but it seems to work (sometimes)

anyway no more rambling. keep up the great work, thanks for posting it up and keeping us all entertained. enjoy the holidays and I look forward to next years updates

That cleaned up real nice. Yours looks better than mine already. I was worried it was never going to make it with all the fedex exception notices i kept receiving.

I just read thru your thread and you have a great space and you do some real cool work. Not to mentaion all the awesome old tools! Keep up the good work!

Here in Winfield, the people that put up the big advertisement road signs, they have a couple different sizes. I think one size is 14' tall by 50' long for $75.00. Its that weird vinyl, and plastic material that is real strong. Anyway was thinking you could by a sign and put it in your round top to make a place to heat so you can work out there when it gets real cold?
Still looking for the battery, I will find it today. Got the shop manual, it has the same info on the rear axle as the book I bought separate.

Bagged has another one of his own, if he restores it to the quality of his vises mine will look like a steaming pile. I don't get paid for the extra time I have to be at work on weekends or late nights, it is all part of being salary. I'm leaning toward working out a little room on the north end of the lean to that I'll build a wood working room in and insulating it. However, to get that done I first have to fix the leaking roof so it will be put off until spring or early summer. I look forward to the battery and giving this old girl a go around. It figures the shop manual and the axle manual have the same information. Also don't forget to bring some oil with you, I don't have nearly enough to fill it up.

While I was in the wiring mood I decided to wire a plug in behind the wall by the Jet lathe. Why you might ask would I need to do that, well simple really how else would I plug in a fridge inserted into the wall?

So I went from this:

I also started on the lower portion of the T.B.W. covering. I'm using old barn tin around the place and installing it in 2x4's with a channel routed in the middle. Sadly my 1.5 year old Dewalt router decided it wanted to let out some magic smoke after I only finished 2.5 boards. Luckily that was enough to do this section, I'll get on to the rest of it shortly. I should also mention I'm staining the boards to match the framework on the bench.

It was certainly a magical time in our house seeing their faces on Christmas morning. We had a wonderful time and got to spend a little bit of it with family as well. I don't really want to think about my daughters being in their 20's and out of the house they are my little babies right now and want them to stay this way as long as possible.

Sadly I don't have much to report as far as progress, shortly after Christmas we started getting rain then more rain that soon changed into freezing rain then just ice. We lost power for a few days and as we are at the end of the line so to speak for electrical supply we didn't expect to get anything back very soon. I found out 84% of the homes our electric coop supplies were knocked out. I made a mad dash to the hardware store to pick up one of the last gas heaters and the last generator in the area. Because of some of the recent organization in the Warthog Hidey hole I was able to get the heater installed and working in the house in short order. I didn't have to hunt to find the missing puzzle pieces needed to connect the propane line and it fired right up. From when we lost power in the evening the house was at 70F, 14 hours later when I had it hooked up we were down to 54F. I connected the generator to half of the breaker box in a connection I installed and had enough power to run the fridge, freezer, some lights and the TV. (Entertaining children for days without power would have been an adventure an a half without that.) Because the generator I picked up didn't have 240V power we couldn't run our well pump so we didn't have water which added to the adventure of it all. We now have power back and are looking more into a whole house backup in case this happens again.

On top of that our house was hit hard by the cold this year and has had most of us sniffling and sneezing like crazy so our energy levels were down quite a bit.

On a sad note one of my brothers-in-law was involved in an accident on new years day night, long story short some guys were after his roommate and attacked him stabbing him a few times and beating him up pretty good. The worst stab wound was one that went in his back that got his spleen and a lung. He made it through surgery and is in stable condition now and recovering. I'm sure there will be more to come on this story but that is about it for now.

We had power out also ,but it was only about 5 minutes at a time. Probably 5 or 6 times. Nothing like about 10 years ago, it went out for about 5 days. Luckily I worked in Wichita, and we got a hotel for a few days.
Man, that's terrible about the B I L. Crazy people now days.
I'm still looking for that battery, can't believe I can't find something that big? really starting to drive me mad I know its out there somewhere. Its been so cold I haven't been in the barn much. Will go out in the next few days to look some more. Might try to come down this week end or there after, let you know.

This outage wasn't as bad as what my parents had a few years ago, they had a bad ice storm that knocked them out for 21 days total, they actually had to have my grandparents deliver a generator from the Kansas City area as there was nothing they could find for over 150 miles because everyone was out. I'll take my few days out and now we can easily survive without it if it comes down to it again.

The BIL is doing better but is pretty swollen and bruised still with some fluid coming out of his lungs and also in lots of pain. On top of that our two year old was diagnosed with pneumonia yesterday but you sure can't tell by the way she is acting she is just as happy as I've ever seen her just a little cough and runny nose.

I'm sure you'll find the battery right after you give up and buy a new one.

Wow, JB. It sounds like you guys have been through the mill.

When we first moved here 17 years ago, out power would go out nearly monthly. It was insane. The power company has gradually gotten better at trimming the trees around the power lines so outages are getting less and less frequent. But I went 14 years without a generator. One time, the outage was so long I had to strap a water trough to the tractor and scoop water from the creek into it so we could use to water our horses.

I think in the 3 years since we've had the generator, I've only had to use it about 5 times. But I'd never go back to not having one. I'm spoiled now!

No other motive in the initial purchase, but it has worked out to where I now have expanded my possibilities of work locations.

I finely finished the lower portion of the T.B.W. after getting the router up and going. Here are some of the pictures, I didn't get one of the overall as there is a lot of clutter when I had to leave.

North end furthest from the main bench the OSB is where storage cabinets will eventually go:

There is more to do on the C.O.B.R.A. for doors and then that storage area but that will be the end of the T.B.W. as we know it.

Did not lose power in town, but I did see where the rural elec had 5k meters out at the height...and just 60 days it will be storm season. You might appreciate having that big generator around more than you think

Having read this build for six or more months on and off, as an unapologetic city kid, your space is the biggest reason I could see myself moving into the "outer ring" of suburbs… Sure, its not 100% yet, but you've done it all yourself, and from this end of the inter webs, very well. Being able to cut a check for that progress would be nice, but at the same time, you wouldn't have the same familiarity with the project, and the long-term thoughts about building what you need (and what gets used most).

Here in suburbia, I have come to appreciate the buried electrical hookups that haven't ever (law'd of the jinx don't hit me now) failed me for more than about 10 minutes. I still think about getting a small generator to keep the fridge and water heater online if I ever really needed it.

As far as the Pneumonia thing, I obviously hope everyone mends well and quickly, but that diagnosis is such a spectrum of symptoms that I'm not surprised that your little one was acting normally. My 60+ father had the same diagnosis and you wouldn't have known the difference at all.

Thanks for checking back in and I'm glad to hear you didn't lose power. I was surprised we got ours on as quick as we did truthfully. Everyone is doing much better now and as of yesterday my BIL is back at home but still has some fluid in his lung.

Thank you for sticking with it and keeping up on my crazy build here. I would have loved to have been able to write a check for some things like the lights, future roof repair, and future insulation but at this time I'm on my own. If you don't mind me asking what state is Flyover State #4? I really do like living out in the country and it does give a lot of privacy as well as being very relaxing not having people walking all over my yard at all hours of the day. Do you happen to have a build thread somewhere on here?

I don't have a build thread, I have a two car, 5 bicycle mess... I've taken photos as I make small and incremental changes which aren't always improvements... If I get the chance to make some significant changes I'll post a whole string of photos.

#4 is East to west (east coast bias that PaC10 is always complaint about). Iowa.

I kind of prefer having people walking up and down the block- but not really in the yard. To each his own.

This has been an icy winter for OK. My FIL is just outside Enid and we had to make a quick run out there at Thanksgiving because he lost power due to icy and got lost/stuck 15 miles from town on a muddy road, ended in an Amber alert. This last storm knocked out his power for 48 hrs. He's burning through his kerosene quickly this year.

Hope your 2yr old gets better soon. I really miss the wide open sky out there. I've really enjoyed the updates, so thanks for taking the time to share.

Thank you for checking in on here, hopefully you've not been too bored with my ramblings. Things have definetly slowed down over winter even though I think I have more time to work out there now than ever before. If something like that ever happens again to your FIL and there is anything I could do to help please let me know! I had the opportunity last year to help someone out that had been stuck for over 12 hours on a very muddy road a mile from our house that is RARELY traveled and not visible from where there is traffic. It was in the 30's and they were on fumes by the time I found them. I'd just hate to hear about someone being seriously injured or even dieing if there was anything in the world I could have done to help them out. Feel free to comment any time you see something I've done idiotic or even if you have questions.
