Another little update for ya'll that are sticking with me. It has been decently cold here the last couple weeks to the point where I can usually only work for 20-30 minutes before my hands get numb enough I can't continue. That is even when wearing insulated bibs, sweater, and jacket. So basically I'm saying I don't get much done this time of year.

I threw this stand together for the Montgomery Ward drill press I pick up last year. It works great and is as stable as I could ask for. I styled it after the lower portion of T.B.W. it is covering to help it blend in a little more. The frame is all new 2x4's with the top being planed 1x12's cut to proper size.

This will help me with my next little project, building a Pull Up Bar and Amazingly Sturdy Shelf (P.U.B. and A.S.S.) that I'll introduce at a later date.

I've also started working on installing the Shop Air System (S.A.S.) which will be a saga in it's own right.

Also to fill everyone in on my BIL, he is recovering and is back to work. They have made two arrests and one is still in the works for the main culprit. Interestingly one of the attackers is on probation and the other still at large is a recent parolee. The attacker that drove to my BIL's home had his GPS pinged there for 24 minutes, the neighbor that witnessed the attack didn't call the cops or try to step in, the roommate didn't call the cops or step in, nor did the other 3 people in the car. Makes me a little worried about our society thinking that for probably 20 minutes or so there were 5 people who could have stopped this and none of them did anything. Also the reason this all started was because the main attacker thought the roommate was in relations with his girlfriend. Oh you just HAVE to love that. Have a great one everyone and stay safe out there.

Mac,
Nice to hear from you, the anvil was my grandfather's, it is a Hay Budden made around 1919 from what I've been able to find on it. It weighs 208 pounds, and is heavy son of a gun I assure you. When I find a nice size log I'll get it mounted but for now works fine on the floor and is easy enough to slide around when I need more access. My grandfather was asked to clean out a barn for someone and was told he could keep anything he wanted. When he passed away my father took care of it then passed it down to me when I got this shop.

JB, thanks for stopping by last week. Its been too cold for me also. Just staying inside watching all the play off football games.
The stand turned out great and matches the rest of the décor. The Monkey Wards drill press looks like a Hershey kiss from the side view, pretty cool looking though.

It was not a problem Herb, I'm just glad I didn't burn anything down or flip any breakers. I'll send you a PM about when I'm free again.

The Montgomery (Monkey) Wards drill press is certainly an interesting design but it works quite well. It is currently set up to run pretty slow for metal and the Craftsman 100 for wood.

I was able to do some cutting, grinding, and welding last night for an hour or so and I can tell today, I can still smell burning metal, I love that smell. :)

JB,
The drill press cabinet looks great and nice work pushing through the cold days! It cracks me up to hear you say that the frame is "new 2x4's" :)

Any plans for heat? Maybe just a 7500 but electric?

Cheers,
Chris

That should keep you warm out there
I was cutting and welding today and I can still smell the burnt flesh from the top of my head from the grinding sparks lol

Sounds like winter is no fun for you guys. I didn't even put on a jacket today and there is no way I can relate to frozen hands while working

My biggest problem out in the garage is remembering where I put the tools down that I was just using (it's a real pisser)

Stay warm

Chris,
Thanks for the kind and supportive comments, I know it doesn't get as cold here in northern Oklahoma as it does in Colorado or many other states for that matter, but it is plenty cold enough for me. I have a decent stash of old rough cut lumber from when the house was renovated so some projects like the sander stand could be made with entirely used lumber, which you can't beat that price.

I would love to get a heater out there but I feel like any time I'd use it I'd just be burning money as there is zero insulation at this point. In order to start on insulation I'd have to fix all of the leaks in the roof which is scheduled for spring time when hopefully it isn't too cold or windy or rainy. LOL

I do plan to start on making a woodworking room in the lean to starting probably this summer after the roof is leak free and been proven to be as such. Once that room is framed I'll run a feeder cable from the main breaker to a smaller breaker box and completely wire out that room and insulate it as well as adding either a small electric heater or a small wood burner. It'll be about 13' (4m) wide by 32' (9.75m) long. That should be plenty for the woodworking I plan to do until my dream shop has funding in year 2040. :)

I was able to do some cutting, grinding, and welding last night for an hour or so and I can tell today, I can still smell burning metal, I love that smell. :)

Don,
That reminds me of a quote I heard from some older veterans, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning,...and burnt flesh." I've had my fair share of burnt flesh but nothing too major. I'm wearing a sweater now that has a few holes burned into it from grinding sparks. :)

I'm a warm weather person but deal with cold as best I can as I know I can't change the weather. I start to come alive at 90 deg. F and would be just fine to work in that all day. Now if I could just remember where I put my jacket...

I just love your stand JB:thumbup:

I will trade you for a little cold its been hovering around a 100 F here.

Regards

1/2 Cup,
Deal, I'll bottle up 20 degrees for you and send it your way. It wasn't as bad this morning in the high 20's out there but was still not too comfortable.

I was able to install the Pull Up Bar and Amazingly Sturdy Shelf (P.U.B. and A.S.S.) today and it truly is sturdy. I used some scraps that were left over from who knows what and made it all work together. The angle is 1.5" x 1.5" x .125" (3.81cm x 3.81cm x 3.2mm) and the bar is 1" pipe.

I won't show ya'll the welds as I'm not entirely proud of them. I'll blame it on the metal as it was very rusty and quite pitted in some places. Before I welded the main cross bar on I installed the two support and they would easily hold my entire weight. I used 3-3/8" x 4" (9.5mm x 10cm) lag bolts into the main studs on T.B.W. I think that is just about perfect for my intended use.

Here is an overall shot of T.B.W. as it now stands:

The comment about new 2x4s reminds me of an old joke:

Hi JB, I've been reading your thread for the last few evenings and finished earlier today. I must say great work on all fronts, it is certainly a challenge getting shop time in whilst keeping on top of the kids and the honey-dos as well, plus the day job!

The hidey hole is looking great, it has lots of character even if it is a bit fiddly working with the curvature of the structure. Once you get to sort out the rain leaks it should button up nicely for the plans you have for the wood shop etc.

I tried to work out your thumbnail issue from one of the early posts you mentioned, all I can tell is your photos are calling /forum/attachment.php and not /forum/picture.php which you can see the code if you click quote on one of your posts. I use the GJ photo album method now which has helped my ones show up larger.

Anyway thanks for sharing and I'll be following along.

Cheers GB.

Grumblebum,
Thank you for reading up on my adventures, I truly do appreciate the time spent by yourself and other to not only read but to also comment on the progress made in and around my Hidey Hole. It gets tough to get much time to work out there but little spurts of even 10 minutes can lead to some major progress as time goes on.

When you area reading along are the pictures showing in the text or only as small thumbnails at the bottom of the reply?

When I upload pictures I use the paperclip to attach them, then drag and drop the link into the text box where I want them, then I'll copy that link and click the little photo icon that puts it in these
brackets other than the "1", is that how you do it as well?

I will have to admit to doing something I VERY rarely do recently, I took a selfie. :( But there was a reason, first the picture:
attachment.php

Now I know what you are thinking, that must be Jack Olsen's ruggedly handsome brother, but no it is just little old me doing the J.O. pose.

That is a couple of quarts of engine oil from my diesel. The way it happened was odd, I had the drain pan under the truck and started to take the plug out, the oil was weeping out around the threads pretty good but nothing too out of the norm. As soon as I pulled it all of the way out oil spewed out of the pan into the drain pan hitting the funnel part of it and made a B line at my face. I used my hand to block it after the initial dousing but as you can tell I was too late. I was covered in oil, this song comes to mind, "...Eyes and ears and mouth and nose..." yep it was in every orifice on my head just about.

Two good things, the oil wasn't extremely hot, and I was wearing my glasses rather than my contacts. So in the end it was just very messy and there have been no ill effects thus far.

I've taken the opportunity of having my truck in the shop to change out all of the idler pulleys and belt to hopefully get rid of the annoying squeak I've had for the last 500 miles or so. I also changed the thermostats as I should have done one of the first two times I had the cooling system apart, but oh well.

So there you have it, I'm still plugging away on little things when I have time and it isn't too cold out. The S.A.S. should be functional in the next couple of days and I'll do a write-up on that when it is.
JB

I have learned never to be underneath a vehicle and pull any type of plug. I've done that but I've also done it with gasoline. I tried getting a stubborn fuel filter off. I got the right tool but wouldn't release but when it did I got a face full of gas.

Well, I just read through your whole thread.

I love your space/place.

You have a good wife to have had her find you a shop that happened to have a house attached. (Bit like my Nicola with our place)

Three things I would pick to have.... The shop, that table you made and this little guy....

Yep, you gotta watch them automotive fluids. Reminds me of my run in with transmission fluid. I had gotten used to swapping out three-speed transmissions on my 1956 Ford beater: a couple of linkages, universal joint and four bolts to the bell housing. I could do it under the car with no jacks/lift. Just pulled it out on my chest and scooted it over. Then I tried the same trick with my four-speed 1967 Olds 442. I found that the transmission was a LOT heavier when it dropped down on my chest. I just held it there while I caught my breath -- and the transmission fluid drained out of the tail shaft between my legs. That stuff smells and doesn't come out with three washings -- jeans OR underwear. Live and learn, I guess. Hope the crankcase fluids come out of your clothing!!

Good thing the oil wasn't hot. That did make me laugh though :bounce:

I had a squeaky idler it turned out in my Hilux (close cousin/equivalent of your Tacoma) too which disappeared when I did a new timing belt kit the other weekend. I had thought it was the A/C clutch bearing originally.

PS I can see both the main photos and the thumbnails fine, I'll check my steps when I have another pic upload and maybe PM you.

Cheers GB.

LOL...JB that face full of oil is priceless. I wish I had thought to video tape myself the first time I changed the oil in my Mazda. I under estimated the potential arc of the oil stream as it left the drain. It arced completely over the drain pan in onto my chest! And it was hot!

JB, I'm glad that oil wasn't HOT! For this reason, I try to never change oil when it is hot. Too many times I've had it running down and soaking my arm. I also distinctly remember an unpleasant time when I received an earful...

Anyway, it provided you with an opportunity for a unique selfie worth sharing! :D

I pulled my filter housing from a funny angle and had warm, not hot, oil run down my arm all the way to my armpit. Soaked my shirt and back. Sucked, really bad! LoL. All I could do was say MF'r and plugged the hole with my finger till I could reposition myself. Had my kid move the pan another foot and yanked my arm out.

Jeff

Oh wow, I didn't expect so many replies on that one, but I guess it is a pretty funny experience and comical photo.

Yes I agree Bob Heine wins and I have no desire to top his story in any future events. I have my share of plumbing tales that were full of "waste" that turned my stomach and I'll leave it at that.

I too am very glad it wasn't too hot, why it wasn't hotter I don't know as I'd only shut it down maybe 5 minutes before. It didn't come out of my shirts, jacket, or hat but that just adds to the character of them.

Bugthug, working at a refinery does have my sense of smell a little dulled down, but I can smell decently well all in all. As an aside I won't be free any this week to lend you a hand on the lights and next week will be the same as you know. I'll make it back up there the week after though and hopefully get the last of them in the south bay up and working.

(Edit: I removed to pictures of the JD Tractor in the reply.)

Grizz, Thank you for the kind words and for tagging along. I'm very fond of my wife and thankful she wanted to get a house with me that had a shop I could use for some of my crazy projects. I'm also proud of the way the table turned out, the Hidey Hole and the JD Model B still have plenty of work left to do on them.

All,
My plan of attack is to finish the S.A.S. I have stage one of phase one complete (The piping from the compressor to the first hose reel.) that I'll post photos of soon. Next up will be the piping to the second hose reel and another run to the location of the future M.B.C. (Mega Blast Cabinet) I plan to build.
Until next time, keep moving forward,
JB

I'm trying a new way of uploading pictures so hopefully it works out, thanks to Grumblebum for giving me this tip.

Here is my cobra as I bought it nearly 6 years ago now:
View media item 57687
I plan to drive it more this year than in years past, in order to do that I want to do a few things:
-Narrow the 8.8" Ford rear end and swap the 4.10:1 gears out for 3.73:1, install the 11" disc brakes in place of the stock drums, and install coilovers.
-The disc brakes will necessitate changing the master cylinder.
-While working on that I'll move the foot well closer to the drivers seat, as right now it is a bit of a stretch to depress the clutch to the floor. (The original owner was 6'-3" and I'm only 5'-7" on a good day.)
-I will do some minor maintenance on the engine, namely when I installed the GM 10SI self exciting internally regulated alternator it was bigger than the Ford unit and doesn't fit as well as I'd hoped.
-While I could do all of this with the body on the frame I won't, I am now working on pulling the body, this is where I'm at now:
View media item 57685
I still have other projects in the Warthog Hidey Hole so they will be worked simultaneously with this. I will have to build a body lifting structure in the garage so I can pull the chassis into the W.H.H. to do all of the work in there. I don't want the body in there because the barn cat loves to climb on vehicles and will scratch the car and I can't have that!

Excited to get this going,
JB

Bugthug,
Below is exactly what Grumblebum sent me in PM, hopefully it help you and others.

"What I do now for photos is in my CP area go down the list and under "networking" there is "pictures and albums". I have been creating an album for each project, but you could just have a general one and load photos into there. Create an album and upload the photos then when it's done you can click on the photo and it will give you a link to paste into your post. It's the one with the IMG tags around it."

Also of note you are limited to 1,000 pictures total uploading them this way so use them wisely.

Yep photos look good. Hope the notes make sense. I might do a proper one with screen shots and post it in the help section.

Cheers GB .

Rod

Yep, that would be a great idea. The Help section did give me a bit of a pointer, but Mark (BBChevro)'s pm finally got me across the line.

And thanks for letting me know mine are working now too.

Grumblebum and Lyndon, thank you both for letting me know the pictures are working better now, I'll continue to use this method into the future, this will also allow me to upload more than 7 photos at a time so I can make some really long posts. lol

Lyndon, no worries on the hijack, all are welcome to hijack away until I step in and bring the hammer of justice down. (Usually the hammer lands on my finger and I run to the corner crying like a school girl who missed out on a Justin Bieber concert.)
