Well done JB

I know the bed is next but you haven't forgotten what is up on the lift at the moment have you ? or maybe you need to forget for a bit. Lol

I doubt Herb will have to bleed the brakes again if it was leaking from the MC unless it went completely empty and even then I bet it'll be fine.

And how did you know that some of us only look at the pictures and not read your posts?:headscrat

Wow, it looks like I should have checked in on my thread yesterday after the Hearse update. Here goes though...

Awesome job on the hearse and fun to follow along. That is one beast of a vehicle but great that you could carefully restore it to former function and keep it so original. Herb will definitely draw attention going down the road in that thing.

Malkow,
I don't think he will have to worry about a lack of attention that is for sure, if nothing else it is a very big vehicle. I kept meaning to take it down to the truck stop and get it on the scale. I'm going to guess it is at least 6,000 pounds (2,700 kg), we tried to load it centered on the trailer with just a slight bias toward the tongue. And strap it down really well. :eyecrazy:

JB, done well:thumbup::thumbup:

Thank you 1/2!

Finally made it through the thread, just in time to see the hearse chapter close. Pretty cool to get it going again.

250,
Thanks for reading along and for posting, welcome to the thread and great timing on finishing the thread!

The hood on the hearse sure looks long. Beautiful!! I guess it's a standard hood but it looks like it would hold a straight eight.

Great work on it, and an even better plan to do the bed next:thumbup::thumbup:

Herb sure has a decent trailer. But that hearse has some length too.

Andy,
I was surprised at how tight the engine was in there though, not much spare room front or back. I commented on his trailer as well, it is pretty solid and he mentioned it is about 20 years old. WOW

JB, I finally worked my way through the entire thread and all of the great commentary. I love your country home and am so envious of all of your acreage. I hope in the next couple of months I can find something like that to myself. The WHHH is absolutely amazing. The size alone would be beneficial to almost anyone. I spent numerous pages wishing you would fix the roof so all of your cool things would stay dry and was so excited to see you finally did! I hope Andy (I love his thread too) and you can get the slope around the shop adjusted to keep all water out. Best of luck!

Thiel,
Thanks for reading through so much rambling, I'm glad you made it to the present time. We have really enjoyed our home and it is in need of a little spring cleaning that I'll get to shortly. I wish you the best on your home and shop search. I wish I could say the leaks are done but they are not. I'm taking a week off in May and will tackle it with a lot of roof goop/tar/sealer or something to hopefully get that part fixed once and for all. There is still plenty of work still to come and in time I'll get to it all.

That Herb guy sure is a good looking devil:evil:
Thanks to JB for getting a dead hearse back from the dead:bounce:
It still needs some love, insurance and a tag. I need to come up with a vanity plate, thinking about DEAD END, or ASH2ASH?:dunno:

I don't think you are looking at the right person Herb. :lol_hitti I showed my daughters the pictures and they said you look like Pa (my father) except you have a ponytail in your beard. :lol_hitti:lol_hitti I would say GRN MILE but it isn't green. UNDRTKR maybe?

Were we looking at the same picture Herb?:headscrat

I like your ideas for the vanity plate. Not sure that I would use DEAD MAN though.

Great job on reincarnating the hearse JB!

Enjoy the ride in it Herb. Make sure you post dates for your World Tour because that looks like it is about as long as the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile which I have passed several times over the years.

Thank you Coomer, it was a lot of work but was a fun time that is for certain.

Nice job on the death wagon

War Wagon,
Thank you, maybe that will be a good license plate for Herb, DETH WGN.

JB.... Good Job on the hearse....
The shop looks pretty darn good too.....

Thanks Lynn, as I said above, there is still plenty to do and I hopefully will be able to knock out some smaller projects and clean it up again before jumping into another giant one.

Well done JB

Grumble,
I certainly have not forgotten, the '57 is high on the thinking, planning, and head scratching list. I have some pretty cool plans for it and am in the process of looking for a drive train for it. ;) Lets just say it'll have more power than the cobra, but may still be slower. :eyecrazy:

DLC,
Where it was leaking was right at the outlet of the MC, for his sake I hope not but the pedal was dead on the first push whereas before it was there just very soft until the end and on the second it had plenty of pressure. Fingers crossed for his sake.

Nice job on the hearse JB!!! I can't wait to see the Mizzou Jeep bed!

Joe

Joe,
Thank you as well, I'm getting excited about the Jeep bed as well and plan to order some parts for it today if all goes well.

All,
Still stripping paint on the chair, man it is thick on the seat portion! Also I may be absent for most of next week, the area I'm responsible for at work has a big corprate audit that I'm in charge of and have something like 59 meetings from 7 am to 5:30 every day.

Yeah I'm wanting to go to a couple of car shows this year, so we will see. I tell you what, for an 70 year old car its a pretty nice ride, I glad to be behind the wheel and not the partition.(divider wall)

I hear you Herb. If it was a street rod, I would tell you to bring it up for the Nationals in August, but it looks too good as a restoration or survivor. Survivor Hearse would be a category for you and you alone I believe.

Also, I agree that it is much better to be in the front seat as opposed to the back seat. There was a hubcap shop owner here about 15 years ago who drove an old hearse. When he was killed, he was taken to the cemetery in his own hearse. My neighbor is a mortician and he said he was certain there was a huge liability waiver with whatever funeral home they used.

Great work on the hearse. Looking forward to the Jeep bed. It may be quicker since your daughter can provide on site supervision. It should be great fun.

Dwight

Chance,
Thanks for the kind words, I'm sure she will love the bed and as long as it is made to her exacting standards she won't have any reason to complain. Now if I use a real Jeep grill I'll need to get headlights for it, if it has lights, shouldn't they be made to work, it'd be a great night light. :bounce:

You could put straight pipes on the hearse, an exhaust to wake the dead! It looks great! Wel done JB and Herb!

Thanks for stopping by Monkey, I see this is only your second comment and you made it on my humble little thread. That would certainly be one way to make some noise but the occupants might have a hard time resting in peace. :3gears:

Hi JB,
I didn't even realize I've only made 2(now 3)comments, I've been reading a long time. By way of introducing myself. I've got a wife of almost 20 Years, together we have 5 Kids (monkeys) ages 17 down to 7 (bggbb) We've got a little single family home in Suburban Northern VA,(becoming more and more urban by the minute). We have a one car Garage and desperately need a good sized shed. Cars aren't anything fancy, a 98 4Runner, 03 Odyssey and an 03 Santa Fe we just picked up for our oldest son to fix and and drive. I haven't done much work on cars, but our trusted mechanic just closed his business and my oldest is about to start training to become a mechanic. Since reading the likes of your thread, Restored 30’s, Bob Heine’s, recently Old Iron Farmer, and various others I have become inspired to try and do more with what I have in terms of space. I’ve incorporated different ideas here and there and there are many others I’d love to time and $ permitting. Anyhow, I didn't mean to hijack. I love what you are doing there in the WHH. I'm impressed with all you get done while still being committed to your family. Keep up the good work and maybe now that I've introduced myself, perhaps I'll chime in more ;-).

The name is clear now and the picture fits right in. Congrats on raising 5 kids, I'm one of 6 boys and I know how much of a handful it can be. So to me it sounds like you have a new mechanic, I'm sure the "free" labor will help to offset the "free" room and board he received up to this point. Just keep at it and even if you can only work for 30 minutes here and there things will start getting done more than you ever imagined. Also if you start a thread please post a link here or at least in your signature so we can all tag along. Lastly I don't think I'm worthy to be included with the likes of Tom, Bob, and Andy. They are all three great stories of how persistence pays off, I can only aspire to being included in that list of fine gentleman.

Glad to hear that you will be tackling the roof in full force in the coming months. I'll be here waiting patiently.

Also, I know you have a lot of other projects going on, but what is the current state of the CMB (cabinet maker's bench) that you got from Tom? As an aside, I am now trying to tackle his thread... :shocking:which is great to do while procrastinating a research paper. :lol_hitti

Thiel,
Hold patiently and I'm sure it'll eventually get done. I'm booked solid this week and don't really have time to even type this but I had to take my smoke break so my head doesn't explode. I need to order the material soon so it'll be here in time.

The CMB is another one of those projects that hasn't been forgotten but has been pushed to the side for the time being. For it I need to buy and build a way to plane the large center section but should get to it sometime this summer if all goes well.

All,
Looks like I may be taking in another lost sole this coming weekend. Hold for further info.

That CMB is just begging for a hand planed top. Get a couple of winding boards and start in on it. You'll be surprised how good a job you can do just working on it for a few minutes in spare time. And hand plane operation is very therapeutic compared to corporate meetings.

Do I smell the WHH vacuum sucking in another project? I knew empty space would be bad for you. Next time this happens I'll bring you an old pickup you can park to fill the void and avoid the addition.

Andy,
I'll have to get you a photo of the center board, it is quite distorted from drying, not impossible by any means but would require a good bit of time. I've been in meetings all day so far and am just now leaving after a 13 hour day of audits. :eyecrazy: At this point anything would be more theropudic!

I do believe you might, it could be a quick little (BIG) project, or I might be consumed for a while. At any rate the bed will be higher on the list. If you bring a truck by just know it won't go untouched and possession is 9/10th. :pimpflash

jb I think that you need to tell Andy that the show truck is too nice and you would not want to take such a one as that so an old ford with a broken window would fit just fine.

WarWagon,
I'll accept any drinks you so happen to take on my behalf, I didn't make it home until almost 9 last night and back again at 5:30, luckily the work inbox had no new messages. :)

D-White, ;)
An old ford with a broken window, a Stuede' with a missing engine, the show truck...I would hate for him to run out of room for all of his vehicles but I don't think he has any concerns about that. LOL

I am now done with the audit that consumed my life this past week and am now in recovery mode at work. Last weekend I found a truck that appeared to need a new temporary home, call it a foster home for some short term rehab. After my daughters soccer game on Saturday I rented a trailer and a friend and headed out to Altus, Ok about 4 hours away. The seller said it lost oil pressure and started knocking and smoking really bad but I had a hunch it wasn't a blown engine but a stuck injector, we made a deal loaded it up and chained it down with my new 5/16" grade 70 chain and 1/2" binders. Not going to loose another vehicle off of the trailer, and I'm glad I did. Loaded and getting a bite to eat before hitting the road:
View media item 70207
We made it about an hour and a half when the steering got real heavy and the gauges started telling me something was amiss I started to pull over when B.P. 2.0 told me the battery wasn't charging. This is what I found:
View media item 70208
Pulley seized and shredded the belt, luckily I had a spare of both:
View media item 70214
You just never know when a spare set of parts will come in handy and I had all the spares I could ask for. It was more difficult to replace the belt than I'd have hoped but it all worked out in the end. I made it back to my house at about 1 AM when disaster struck, because of the massive amounts of rain we have been having I wasn't able to make a wide enough turn and the trailer slid off the drive and into the ditch:
View media item 70209
Well ****, I tried 4wd low with no luck so I went to bed to deal with it in the morning:
View media item 70210
View media item 70211
I dug out for a while but couldn't get any sort of firm ground to drive onto so I called in some reinforcements, two big diesel truck strapped together lugging on this thing in 4wd low and just plowed in more. Broke out the jacks, wood, jack stands decided to unload the truck:
View media item 70212
The truck was just a hair too long to lift the ramps without jacking up the rear of the truck....Or removing the bumper which we did, and I pulled the trailer out with no issues, called in more reinforcements to shovel the dirt back around:
View media item 70213
Then this morning I decided to try to find out which injector was causing the problems while I wait on some Jeep Bed parts to arrive. I disconnected the fuel injection control module and pulled the glow plugs. The idea is that which ever injector is stuck open will continue to flow diesel even when not receiving a signal to open. Turns out it is the #7 cylinder, firewall on the passenger side. Started with this:
View media item 70215
Then stopped here before leaving for work:
View media item 70216
It should be an easy fix and flip. (Famous last words)

Also this weekend my wife asked me to make a pencil holder to look like a pencil out of a 2x4, easy enough. I used 4 long 1/2" (12.7 mm) bolts and lock nuts as guides while drilling 3/4" holes:

A little sanding and paint and complete:

Bam, I make a pencil and it makes my wife happy, I'll take the bonus points. This is for my daughters kindergarten teacher for teacher appreciation week.

Good weekend.

Glad you got that truck out of the ditch and didn't damage the rental trailer.

Wow, Your kids actually go to a school that still uses pencils? I wasn't sure that happened anymore. But seriously, nice job on the teacher gift who I'm sure will really enjoy something like that made special for her. Your kids just got bonus points too.

Rmalkow2,
I'm thrilled there wasn't any damage that couldn't be fixed easily enough and that the chains held their own, I'm certainly thrilled my vehicle tying down technique has improved. :)

Last year in pre-school she actually used the standard #2 pencils but went to a different school this year that required her to use the big style and she had to do a bit of relearning. I will say she is nothing like me, she has no need for bonus points, in fact she gets time off for good behavior unlike my time off for the other kind. :)

JB, we've had the same crazy rain. I've had over 8" in the last 2 weeks. Glad you were able to get everything squared away. You keep finding these "good deals", I suppose I need to get back to the craigslist and find the steals. Maybe when I get some more "free time", haha.

Outlaw,
I need to get a rain gauge eventually but I know we had a lot and it just kept coming day after day. Interestingly enough most of the "good deals" I've been finding aren't on the list of Craig but on Facebook groups. This one he was asking $4,000 with very little info other than the engine lost oil pressure, was knocking, and smoking. I tossed out a low ballish offer of $2,500 and he said sure. So then I had my hands tied and had to buy it. LOL It has a banks exhaust and waste-gate, and an edge tuner along with a front and rear radar detector. I should easily make a few bucks off of it as long as there isn't much more beyond the injector issue. Cool thing about the truck is I have the original window sticker and and some of the service records.

You been busy!:willy_nil

Makes me tired.

One question, how do you explain the loss of engine oil pressure associated with a failed injector? Even if it has a bad engine, you might make money with an engine swap. Or, part it out, I'm smelling aluminum castings:rocker:

Great luck having the right serpentine belt on the new truck!

Hard luck on the tight turn, but it is great it was at home. Jack/crib/jack/crib/jack/crib pull. Of course you've got to have enough materials to crib with. I got my TD-18 stuck in a wet spot (lime truck got stuck, I pulled him out and tried to back drag the area, quick sand) and an old hand showed me to cut up a telephone pole into 18" pieces, put some under the blade, lift the track, more under the track, more under the blade, more under the track and finally got enough wood under it to drive it out. A TD-18 is a 40,000# tractor and it takes a big one to pull it out so self extraction was the best way.

You weren't kidding when you said you had big updates coming. Nice score on another truck. Hope it is an easy fix. I wish I had more confidence around diesels. I would love to find a good deal on one that needs some work.

That is a steal for sure, should be able to turn that one at any rate, and make a profit!

Outlaw,
I sure hope so, the first time I tried to buy a vehicle to fix and flip didn't turn out all that well and after 6 months on the market I got less than half of what I had in it in cash but also got a shotgun and lots and lots of ammo so I'll say I broke even. :)

The owner wasn't driving the truck when the injector stuck open so I can't say where that part of the story came from for certain but it certainly has oil pressure now. Sadly finding a used engine is not easy to do and when I have found them they are way more expensive than it would be worth to buy. If I part it out I'll hold onto the aluminum for your casting adventures.

When I was working in cotton fields in high school I once saw a John Deere 8650 (Big 8 wheel center pivot tractor) with a full laser grading bucket buried up above the tire center line. It stayed there for a few days.

When I bought my first diesel truck I hadn't ever worked on them before but with google and you tube it makes finding problems so much easier. I hope it is just the injector too but time will tell I suppose.

I loosened the injector lines this morning and left it alone while I wait for the parts to come in. I used the rest of the morning to vacuum out the interior and get ready for a quick detail job.

This is so incredibly true. Funny story (exposing myself as oldschool a bit) but a young guy (22 or 23), at work, is having issues with his TJ Jeep and he's completely green when it comes to vehicles. He needed to change a few parts and do some simple maintenance and I recommended to him, "go grab a service manual and it will tell you step by step..." He contorts his face a bit like... why would I ever buy a book?... and says, "Yeah, I'll probably just look on YouTube."

It was some old ingrained, rote response stored in some fold of my brain. I use the Internet to learn all sorts of things but there's still some oldschool mentality somewhere in me but I should know better by now, especially when it comes to a young person.
