DLC,
In that case come on down, I'm a sucker for a free meal.

All,
I broke down and have started tearing into the Silver Fox, my first step is to remove the head on the passenger side, if it appears I need to keep digging I'll then work to remove the engine but I really hope it doesn't come to that.

I had a busy weekend and decided to keep working toward figuring out what was truly wrong with The Silver Fox. Well one thing led to another and this happened:
View media item 70895
I should have done this from the begining and it would have made it much easier on me. I worked down and pulled the head:
View media item 70893
I think I found out why it was knocking:
View media item 70894
The head doesn't look any better:
View media item 70892
I don't think valves are supposed to look like this:
View media item 70891
The head without the exhaust valves:
View media item 70890
I think what happened was the injector was stuck open, dumped a lot of fuel and caused it to get a little hot. Yeah a bit of an under statement! Once the valve and head melted enough the valve seat melted too and came out, fell into the cylinder and bam! the block has a little melted spot on it too so the engine is toast! Well ****, I'll try to sell it as a hole but if not will part it out. Sad day but that is life sometimes.

I think you should have left well enough alone.

A little Sea Foam and it would have smoothed right out and run like a new one.

The other option is to remove the exhaust valves, disable the intakes and run it on seven. "Miss? Are you sure? It sounds good to me?":eyecrazy:

Outlaw, there is definetally a mess in the shop right now.

Andy, it is self clearancing so it shouldn't be a problem. I have considered doing just that, disconnect the injector and put it all back together. It won't hurt it worse than it already is.

All hail to the new lift....or was the lift the cause of this mess ...? Seriously I feel your pain.

The lift made dealing with the mess a lot easier, I should have pulled the cab in the beginning but tried to keep from having to do that. So if anyone needs any parts let me know. :lol_hitti

Haha, JB, I was referring to the head and piston!

I know but that mess lead to the other mess and now everything is just messy. LOL

heck jb, i think i would have the head rebuilt and scrape the piston top and slap it together. i bet it would work long enough to sell it. not perfect, but maybe worth a try. wonder what a head rebuild cost is these days?

Pardon my complete lack of knowledge on this subject, but in this image, is that the piston top shaped like that? I've never seen a piston like that before. Why do they build them that way?

Oh and good job. You tackle things in a matter of hours I would bellyache over for years.

JB,

That cylinder looks a little rough. The couple of "easy" fixes you posted was making me think about trying to find a used duramax, but this one makes me remember why I haven't done it yet.

Jim,
I've looked up the cost of a usable used head and they are around $350-$450, sadly the duramax heads I have in a box don't fit as they are from a newer design. :( I've heard from a friend that it would cost as much or more to have this one rebuilt so if I fix it I'll just buy a used one. I'm posting the truck up for sale in the next day or two when the title arrives.

Oh believe me I bellyached about this one for a while, then cried, and now my back is not too happy with me for all of that off camber work. As you can see in the head photo the injector shoots right into the center of the piston, the bowl is shaped like that to help spread the 29,000 psi fuel around and compress with the turbocharged air in a more even fashion. The valves aren't angled like in a gas engine and open straight down relative to the piston.

Yeah I'm burned out on this project now. HAHA I know now why some of these easy fixes and good deals don't always work out together.

I was hoping you'd find parts or an inexpensive engine for this rig to get back into service. A dually would be nice to have for all the stuff you do.

I will throw the stupidest idea....

Sorry to hear about the engine troubles JB. Could you part it out and still make some cash? It seems you've been pretty lucky doing that in the past.

You should step up your game and try a Powerstroke ;)

Brent,
I did find a used engine this morning and am waiting on a reply, sadly it was posted for sale in early March so it may not be around any longer, we shall see. I would like to have a dually, but in reality it is bigger than what I need, The Black Plague 2.0 is a 1 ton also but just with a single rear wheel and more importantly it has 4wd, also I don't want to think about trying to drive a 22 foot long dually trying to pick kids up from school and BP 2.0 already has to do 87 point turns in. :spit:

Not the stupidest idea, but most definitely the hardest, SOOOO many wires and computers on this truck that just go everywhere I don't know that I'd ever get it all to work. But I do like the sounds those 12v's make.

I probably could make a bit, may come close to breaking even but time will tell. I hate to admit it but I know as much about the Powerstroke as I do about knitting. My first diesel truck experience was in a 7.3 around 2003 or so, I was really surprised how fast that monster of a truck moved. I like the way they look and if I could find a good deal it would be tempting.

So question, do you think the prices of diesel trucks there are about right or way over priced?

JB

Update:
That engine is still available, sadly the power steering line on my truck is still blown and I can't go get it until that line comes in. AHH!!!! I might just be able to salvage this truck after all! Woo Hoo!!!!

Small little update on what I've been up to, I have started cleaning up some of the parts on The Silver Fox to get it ready for whatever I might start doing be that reinstall as is, replace the piston and head or perhaps a new engine that I'm trying to work a deal on. Also my dear wife asked me to paint a grill insert for her Jeep and install it. Being the team player I am I got that taken care of:
attachment.php

I think it looks pretty good even if it wouldn't be my first color choice. :)

Last night a deal was struck for me to pull the doors and top off of it too. I'll never do that again alone or without my lift or a pulley system, I got it without damage but managed to pull a muscle in my middle back by my shoulder blade, ouch!
attachment.php

The girls loved the little trip we made in it yesterday. Other than that I'm working that deal on the engine, he said he has 2 other complete trucks with diesels he will sell with the engines for $2,500 total. :bounce:

I haven't pulled the doors off on mine yet (might happen at some point this summer), but I did take the top off last summer. Since my wife was pregnant at the time, I did it mostly myself too.

The best technique I could figure out was to have a set of saw horses and steps behind the Jeep, remove the bolts, then using my back to support the weight of the top from the inside, just walk the top off the back of the Jeep and set it on the saw horses. To reinstall, get 'inside' the top again and walk it back onto the Jeep. The benefit of using your back to support the weight is that you have your hands free to balance the rest of it. It might help to have one of your girls spot you when reinstalling so you know when the holes are lined up and can set it down. Just make sure they don't get caught between the roof and the 'sport bar.'

Not ideal, but it did work. Some sort of pulley system will eventually be made instead though.

Duct tape the power steering line, go get you an engine. lol

I probably should, if it works out I might have to try harder to buy a line here in town before heading down to pick it up.

I watched a few youtube videos on how to do it alone and they made it look easy. Piece of advice, check out how big they are compared to me. LOL This is the first time we've removed the doors or the whole top and it wasn't really too bad, maybe 30 minutes total for all of it.

Basically all of my experience with the Powerstrokes are with the 7.3 since I've owned two. All of my learning has been from youtube/forums which it seems like you do the same. The internet is a pretty useful source nowadays if you can weed out some of the "helpful" things lol. But any newer Powerstroke makes mine feel like a dinosaur. I've driven a few 6.4's and man I would love to have one. And the new 6.7's make the 6.4's seem like dinosaurs from what I've heard. I'll keep my slow 7.3 for quite a while. It gets the job done every time and is "cheap" to fix compared to something newer.

All diesel trucks around here are severely overpriced. There is a diesel/tech school about an hour from here so the market is flooded with over priced second gen Dodges that are rusted out with 300k miles for 15k because "they're just getting broken in" :lol_hitti

Also, the factory I work in produced the top for your Jeep  and yes, they are very hard to move around by yourself.

Great job on the Jeep grill. You just can't question a woman's choice of colors.:bounce:

It will be interesting to see what you come up with on the Silver Coyote.

Thiel,
That is how I learned most everything on the Duramax, okay well that is how I learned everything about diesel engines. :) I've driven a couple of the 6.7's and one 7.3. The 7.3 will just get it done like an old 12v Cummins, but the 6.7 is just a smooth beast of an engine. I see a lot of 300k mile trucks for sale but not many with more miles than that, if they are just broken in at that mileage why aren't there more 4-500k mile truck for sale? :lol_hitti

Cool that you helped to make the top for Jeep, it was easier to install with the help from my BIL. Wife ran out last night at 9 to install the two front panels and good thing she did, we got about a 1/2" of rain from 4-6 this morning.

Great job on the Jeep grill. You just can't question a woman's choice of colors.:bounce:

Andy,
I'll show you below, but I think I'll have plenty of parts to get the Silver Fox back on the road. I seem to have a soft spot for the girls and I'm fine with that.

All,
I was on the lookout for an engine or cylinder head to get the Silver fox back on the road and did a random search for engine in a diesel group on the book of faces and ran across an add for an Isuzu engine:
View media item 71063
Sure enough that is a Duramax more specifically an LB7 from 01-02. Talking to the guy I was concerned about it being open and out in the weather but figured the head minus the parts I could sell for cores would make it worth it, he was asking $1,000. Then he mentioned he had two others and he'd sell all 3 for $2,500. Well 3 engines for that would be great but then found out he meant he had 2 "whole" trucks and this engine. He ended up taking $1,800 for everything. I picked up the engine and one truck Saturday:
View media item 71064
Sorry about the picture this was taken at about 5 am. The engine shifted a little as I drove home and I kept stopping every 30 minutes to tighen it down bit by bit:
View media item 71065
Started pulling parts to get to what I needed and should have an engine ready to install by the end of the week if all goes well. On Sunday I picked up the other twin:
View media item 71066
So now I had the twins at home and ready to part out. They are old service trucks and I'm working to piece together some history on them now, the tires could use some work, two have tread separated, one has a big cut, and two others just needed aired up to make them both roll. Luckily I have some spare parts laying around to make it all work out. :)

When I was mowing on Monday I saw a piece of metal in the ground, pulled it out and it ended up being an old bumper jack (No Pictures Sorry) then a few minutes later saw what looked like a license plate. Sure enough:
View media item 71062
A 1937 Oklahoma plate, not in great shape, but for being in the dirt for maybe 80 years I bet it is in better shape that I would be. LOL All in all a good weekend with lots accomplished.

JB, Looks like a pretty good score for turning lemons into lemonade on the Silver Fox. My uncle used to pull the service bodies off his HVAC trucks to put on the next one and put a wood bed on them to sell them off. He said they sold a lot higher and were already depreciated out so it was pure profit. I wish we lived closer because the bumper and grill from those would look good on my DD. Are they also diesels?

Keep your eyes on the plate the next time Andy visits. He likes old iron.

Coomer,
I'll lock them up if Andy swings by for an unexpected visit. HAHA Lemons, what are you trying to say the two trucks I bought were lemons? Well you are probably right for the price I paid and the parts they are missing they aren't going to sell as a whole just as parts unless the price is right for the lot of parts. Make a road trip out of it, I'll even give you a free tour of the place and may even be able to get you a bit of food around here somewhere. :)

My mouth is watering with all the useless aluminum castings in those trucks!

Tag is cool.:thumbup: I believe the F in the center is for farm vehicle.

Useless... Nah just waiting to find a new use for someone else. I'll have some parts to scrap out about will be in touch if you want dibs.

911, that's a sign. No really its a sign. I guess more of a plate than a sign:dunno::willy_nil
I was hoping:dunno: you were working on the 1957 Chevy?

Nice scores on the duramax engines!

Sean,
Let's hope so at least, I need to start getting some money back out of these things, I'm in pretty deep now and need to empty out the yard sooner rather than later.

Herb,
Sadly no work on the '57 yet, I'm planning some neat things for it but need to get some money together to make that a reality, or at least get a good start on it. Once I get the caked on mud off of the plate I'll add it to the pile I need to get up on the wall, I have a few, nothing like your collection, but a few for sure.

do you all know the stories and pictures of massive private junkyards with nature eating the cars?

this is how they start.

Haha, I sure hope not, I made sure to leave room between them to mow but know I can't let it get out of hand...I'm sure everyone says that. Darn I need an intervention and soon.
