Nice score JB. I wish we could find trucks in that good shape around here. All we get are rusted out POS.

The plate is pretty cool. LMAO with your statement of 80 years in the dirt.

Andy Jr? lol

Too Funny Shorty! :lol_hitti

It is not too funny, that's how it starts. Grand plans and real estate covered. Room to mow at first, then tighten things up to make room for more.:willy_nil

Welcome, JB.

Ya'll are killing me, I know I have what could be a problem but I know I can't keep things like this outside forever so I will keep working The Silver Fox until it is done then get it out of there. Next will be the Jeep Bed, I haven't forgotten and am reminded of that every night when my daughter goes to bed and asks about it. Then parting out the Twins.

License plate is pretty cool though.

I like that sort of thing. Always makes me wonder what life it had seen before.

I assume it was in use about a year then could have stayed in the dirt up until now, perhaps was shot at some point too. Neat find nonetheless, and I'd like to know what vehicle it was on too, I'm sure in 1937 there weren't as many vehicles on the property as there are now.

Cool you are on fire with these truck acquisitions JB.

So not enough parts between the Lemons to get one running ?

GB

I feel like I'm on fire sometimes, I might be able to get one running but will have to buy some parts as there are a few things missing on both trucks, like batteries and some of the fuel system. I'll try to get one running and that will make the engine and trans more valuable.

Nice score JB. I wish we could find trucks in that good shape around here. All we get are rusted out POS.

If you want to come get them I'll make you a deal, then you can find them in your yard year round. :)

All,
Still working on swapping parts over from the donor engine to make one complete engine, nothing really picture worthy but lots of bolts flying around.

Good news is I'm still alive, bad news is I haven't gotten as far as I'd wanted to with as many hours as I've worked on The Silver Fox, but what is new. I got called in both Saturday morning and REALLY EARLY Sunday morning, and my wife had to work late Friday and all day on both weekend days so not much happened this weekend but some quality kiddo time. I did get the girls to help me change to a more "manly" horn on my cobra and reinstall the radiator overflow tank.

Over the past few days I've gotten all of the known good parts from the old engine moved over to the new engine for The Silver Fox. Injectors took the longest then just some odds and ends that seem to take way too longs and lots of torquing of the bolts. I did manage to get the bad engine completely pulled though:

You can see my patent pending cylinder stop tool put to good use. LOL The truck is ready for the heart transplant:
View media item 71205
I actually did get the new engine installed in the engine mounts this morning and put on a little new wire loom but didn't get a photo because I was running late for work. Oops I only have 4 more morning to work on it before I leave for the Hot Rod Power Tour Friday morning, I won't have it all back together but it will be closer...hopefully.

Thank you Andy, it has been a trying time for certain. Hot Rod Magazine does a tour every summer for ~15 years now I think, the route changes year to year. This year it starts in KC Mo on Saturday, then goes to Des Moines on Sunday, Davenport, Champaign, St. Louis, Indy, then Bowling Green with an easy interstate route, or the preferred back road route. There are usually about 5,000 at each stop and lots of people and cars to wander around and stare at. Want to dust the cob webs out of one of your cars?

JB I believe the first year was 1994 or 1995, it's over 20 years for sure. We might try and catch some of it on Saturday, we live about 1 hour away from the airport to the northeast. I wanted to make the trip to Davenport and then head home, but just wasn't in the cards this year (plus I need to get the AC and cruise installed in the Z28). Maybe I'll have the '49 GMC done in time for next year's event!

Outlaw,
I didn't realize, or more than likely forgot, it had been going on that long. I did the whole thing last year and had a good time outside of burning up, getting rained on, breaking my trans, and fixing the broken trans. Cars were great to see and the people were awesome. I'll send a PM with my phone number, if you make it let me know, I'd like to meet you in person.

911, that's a sign. No really its a sign. I guess more of a plate than a sign:dunno::willy_nil
I was hoping:dunno: you were working on the 1957 Chevy?

When I was mowing on Monday I saw a piece of metal in the ground, pulled it out and it ended up being an old bumper jack (No Pictures Sorry) then a few minutes later saw what looked like a license plate. Sure enough:

A 1937 Oklahoma plate, not in great shape, but for being in the dirt for maybe 80 years I bet it is in better shape that I would be. LOL All in all a good weekend with lots accomplished.

Herb,
Bring your shovel and get to work, no telling what you will find out here. :eyecrazy:

All,
I am at the point where I had to install a new flex plate in The Silver Fox, the one on the donor engine was chewed up pretty good and the starter was in similar shape. However the parts that came with the truck were in great shape, the bolts that hold them on are 14mm allen bolts and are torqued to 58 ft.-lbs. then in a sequence to 60° further, then another 60°. So they are freaking TIGHT. In the past the cylinder heads have been off and I use a piece of angle iron, a block of wood, and two head bolts to push against the piston and that works great. However, with the good engine I needed a flywheel lock like this one:
T145597239.jpg

Those are over $100 and no one around here sells one, what to do... Make one of course. I used an old flywheel and cut it up, welded it to the piston stop angle iron, drilled a new hole and came up with this:
View media item 71208
When installed:
View media item 71207
Worked like a charm, now to position the ~800 pound (360 kg) trans and get it bolted back up. I'll also mention the welds don't look that bad compared to my usual but with my first pass the penetration was a little weak but after 2 more passes to fill in a bit more it is better. Lots to learn still but at least I'm not as bad as I was.

Thank you Brent, and I agree, I've made a few of my own tools and have had marginal success with a few but this one worked flawlessly. I've actually had a couple of people ask for me to make a couple so I may have to make a small run of them shortly.

Oh and if Andy asks these were "engineered tools" not homemade tools, don't want to get in trouble at work. LOL

OK, let's see the stress analysis on the weld size required to hold the cantilevered flywheel ring gear section, and also we need a material analysis of the ring gear and a full written weld procedure to be certain your weld will have full integrity. Then you need to have a peer review prior to submitting the idea. Legal review can come next. All of which must be done before any attempt at fabrication can begin.

1/2 would like you to paint it, please.

Good job!:rocker:

If I could get away from the house I'd make that trip in an instant. Sounds like a lot of fun! Have a great time!!

Darn Andy found out, I'm sure glad I didn't use the tool then and just mocked it up for photo purposes...

I understand it is tough to get away and am fortunate I'll be able to make it this time, it is always a balancing act of getting the time, money, energy, and a slight appreciation for masochism riding in my car for that long. Luckily I'm staying with friends or family for every night but 2 and gas is cheaper than it has been.

JB,

Awesome "Engineered" tool you made. Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.

I don't know if I would say ingenuity as I just made a tool similar to one for sale, but it is nice to have the materials and tools to make tools that are prohibitively expensive to purchase. I just realized I need to make another that will bolt in from the front so I can work on the crank pulley when I do the water pump work because the trans will be installed by the time the water pump arrives.

Part looks good and appears to work good, now I'm not an engineer but I did stay at a Super 8 motel. I think I would change one thing on it, or maybe not. But I think the teeth need to be in the flex plate a little more. Considering the amount of torque the bolts should be under. Maybe make the holes where the bolts attach to the block with room to adjust the tool as needed? Other than that, I say winner winner, steak dinner!
Hey on the road trip, you coming anywhere near here? If so stop by, like to see ya and get some pictures. Later

Shorty,
The proof is in the pudding, or something like that because I didn't put the tool in pudding. LOL I did verify the proof of concept by testing it under a full load situation and it passed with flying colors. :)

Herb,
I made one slight mistake when making the tool but since you brought it up I'll mention it. I welded the teeth on backwards, the chamfer for starter engagement is on the front of the flexplate and the back of the tool, DOH. In the original picture you can zoom in and see the teeth are fully engaged but it doesn't appear to be in the photo posted.

Sadly no, I have to leave pretty early Friday morning to make it to KC in time to do a shop tour and knowing your schedule I'm sure you will still be sleeping. :)

All,
Trans is now attached to the engine and the cross member, I'm installing the flexplate to torque converter bolts now.

Looking good and making progress!:rocker:

One would suspect that one tooth of the ring gear is very adequate to hold the torque required to loosen the bolts, but you might slot out one of your mounting holes to let the lock swing in tighter and be sure you are on two teeth. Maybe you did that.

Will the harmonic balancer lock fit into the starter opening and engage the ring gear?

When do you leave on your trip?

Andy,
Because the scrap piece I used from the old ring gear was convex as well as the flexplate I could only get 2 teeth fully engaged and a couple others partly engaged. It worked great and that photo was actually taken after they were already tightened. It will not fit in the starter hole and still work, I could make another but will cross that bridge when I get there. My impact will take it off normally if I have a fresh battery on it.

I leave on Friday morning kinda early to not only make it to KC on time for the shop tour but also to drive mostly in cooler weather.

JB Great work on the engineered tool. If you do not take it off the farm it would fall in the category of farm tools and we know that farmers receive all kinds of exemptions.

Trip sounds great.

There are plenty of farm tools laying around and I hope to never loose one...but that does happen sadly.

Hope you have a great tour. Remember if there isn't pictures it didn't happen.

I hope so too shorty, and not broken parts because of :3gears:. I'll have my phone of course and my co-pilot will have a nice camera and a go pro so we should get some pretty cool videos out of it as well. If timing would have worked out better I could have borrowed another friends drone with go pro mount and gotten some really cool video of the thousands of cars, however, it is already booked for another event.

All,
More work to mount things back onto The Silver Fox, it won't be done before I leave but the Turbo is back on, trans is completely mounted and done, and a few other odds and ends are finished as well.

Thank you Andy, hoping for the best.

who's the co-piolet?

Alex my friend with the white Jeep Grand Cherokee, we went to college together, were in the same fraternity, and now we work together. He is also Air Force Reserve so we can get some military discounts along the way. :)

P.S. I probably won't be back on for a week and a half, so hold down the fort and don't get too out of hand while I'm gone.

I made it back from my trip and all is well, no real problems the entire week, and no one in our group ended up on a trailer so it couldn't have been too bad. First off let me say this isn't the typical car show , we had around 6,500 cars that drove from Kansas City to Newton, Ia. (Des Moines) then Davenport, Champaign, Il., Madison, Il. (STL), Indy, then to Bowling Green, Ky. Yes there are places to park but there are no trophies for coming in first for any reason. It is just a bunch of car guys and a few car girls and their friends, families, or unsuspecting co-workers that get talked into doing this drive. Last year I was on my own but this year I talked my good friend Alex into coming along. We are all packed up and ready to hit the road:
View media item 71475
Nice and clean put putting down the gravel road:
View media item 71476
The first issue came up in Kansas City in stop and go traffic, smoke started coming from Alex's footwell:
View media item 71477
It turned out to be the wiring from the fan relay to the fan, this worked for 6 years, not my best work and not how I did the repair. Luckily I had a spare inline fuse and connectors to we fixed it for the time being and hit the road again. The first stop was in Kansas City at the Cheifs Stadium, there I got to meet OutLawDrifter and his two sons:
View media item 71478
It was great to meet him and his boys went away with a new Hot Wheels, I bought 90 on the bay before the trip to hand out to kids along the way, there were other cars doing the same and some tossing out candy. I didn't think candy would last in my car so the Hot Wheels were our choice.

In Newton I tried the autocross, I didn't get the hang of things and managed to eat a cone on my second try, sadly no photo of that:
View media item 71479
A few days later in Madison I tried my hand at drag racing, long story short they wouldn't let me run without a helmet which as you know I had plenty of room to pack....well I did find someone to let me borrow theirs:
View media item 71480
I slept at the line, spun a little then bogged after the spin, I'm sure with a few more tires I could have gotten it down to below 14 but didn't really care as I've decided the engine probably won't make another year and plant to pull it sometime this winter. Here is the time slip if you are interested:
View media item 71487
I was traveling with my brother's in-laws in their 1965 Mustang, they met a gentleman named Ronnie driving a 1967 Chevelle Malibu that needed a hand, we jumped in and were soon joined by Bart who was camping with Ronnie and his copilot Denny. Here you can see the group:
View media item 71481From left to right is Alex (Photographer), me (Mechanic's Assistant), Bart (Master Mechanic driving a '57 Chevy Wagon pulling a teardrop 2 person camper), Ronnie (Provider of roadside repair opportunities), Dan (Lead Driver), and Denny (Official provider of beer and comic relief). Not Pictured behind this camera is Marna the lead navigator who had a heck of a job and excelled at it, Dan's wife, Dan and Marna are my brother's in-laws, but I call them my in-laws too. Also not Pictured is Al who joined our group later in his 55 Chevy.

After the newton stop I stayed with a friend who showed me his piston stool:
View media item 71482
He made this in a shop class with wood and a 20 gallon drum, I really want one!

During a cool down session a group of kids came out to watch the parade and were given a couple of Hot Wheels by Ronnie and I:

I thought this was a really cool old truck, check out the engine placement, too cool!

Another odd truck, you just never know what you will see out on the road, or in your hotel parking lot:

Another night a stayed with a friend and it rained all night, luckily we made room to fit my car in his shop:
View media item 71488
He made us and some of his other friends some fried fish and french fries washed down by some PBR, a few hours later we decided to hook up a set of dixie horns to my car, it works great and gets lots of laughs:
View media item 71489
On the last day we had about 4 hours to travel before getting to Bowling Green, then another 4 to get to my parents house so we cannon-balled with Al:

Turns out we made it just in time, those in front were forced to turn around so we ended up being second in line:

After leaving Bowling Green on Friday we went back to my parents house, my youngest brother Patrick (Pictured below) is working with another brother Andy (Not pictured) to rebuild a '65 Mustang they got for "free". It was free after they donated about 40 hours of labor to rebuild a deck for a co-worker. Patrick and I did a few hours of work on it while I was home:
View media item 71493
The next morning there was a car show 10 minutes away so I decided to stop in for a couple hours, donate some money to a small town car club and try to win the award for "furthest distance traveled". :) I almost felt bad because I didn't even clean the car or wipe the bugs off of the windshield when we arrived, just parked and went looking at other cars:
View media item 71495
Well I did manage to win the award for furthest distance traveled at 2,009.9 miles. :lol_hitti I would have also won with the ~471 miles back to home. For some reason they also thought I deserved 2nd overall, I disagree because there were some much nicer cars there, but they did score mine 1st so I could leave. My brother accepted the awards that afternoon.

Just as we were leaving a couple of drivers were distracted by my car and both wanted to be in the same lane, the BMW flew in to take over, and the Ram didn't Dodge fast enough. :eyecrazy:
View media item 71496
But we made it home and in one piece without so much as being pulled over and no real problems for anyone. I've been working on The Silver Fox putting parts back on since returning home and also trying a few things to get one of the twins running. So far no real luck on that front but I'm narrowing down the possible problems. The Silver Fox would be ready to drop the body on but I'm borrowing a few known good parts to test out on one of the twins so I'm not dropping it on just yet.

See lots of parts on there, I replaced the water pump while I had it apart and will replace the power steering lines too because they look to be leaking and have been for a while:

Looks like you had a lot of fun, and met some of the GJ'ers. Looks like the weather was decent most of the way. Glad you didn't have any major car problems. The picture of your Cobra and the yellow 55 look good together. The small town car show was probably fun, and gave you time to rest a little bit.
Man that's a lot of driving, but looks like fun. I would like to make a long trip in my hearse, but don't think either one of us would survive.:dunno:

Looks like a FANTASTIC trip. Thanks for sharing the fun through all your pictures.

This is a great trip!:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for sharing.

What a blast!!

You did very well.

All,
Thank you for the kind words, it was a great trip and very please with how it turned out, very few troubles and lots of good times by all. I've made a few more car friends from around the area and that will serve me well in the future. I'll add a few more photos Alex took once he has them processed and available. I may even have a video eventually of some of the shenanigans.

Looks like a GREAT trip!! Wish I could have followed you!

Andy,
There is always next year if I can make it. I made a deal with the wife that if I can get the '57 to a comfortable cruiser (read working AC) and feel it is reliable enough I'll make it a family vacation, but if not I may have to bow out until it is ready enough to make the trip. I'm glad the photo hosting is working for you and it is nice to get to see them again.

All,
I worked on The Silver Fox again this morning and installed the fuel filter head and fuel injection control module as well as installed new power steering/brake booster lines. The next step is to drop the body back down on the frame. :scared: Wish me luck.

Glad that you had a great trip.

Great project, to fix the 57 up so you can take the family. That sounds like it would be a great time for all.

Good luck on the Silver Fox. I can understand that taking the body off made many things easier on the newer vehicles.
