My Ford 1720 came home today. I have missed having it here to lift things. That little front end loader is a real back saver. And as a bonus, the PTO works now!

Finally, some TRACTOR stuff!

No, you do not want any part of wrestling those rear tires. 18.4R34? They look like they might be bigger than that actually. The loader throws me off. If they hold air, leave them alone, you aren't building a show tractor or even using it daily like a fulltime farmer, nor are you spending a lot of time on the road pulling equipment or going between fields.
As for implements to get, brushhog for sure, because the live pto on the 4010 will be much nicer than using the B, although thats not a good reason NOT to use the B. Ours lived on a brushhog for years before we bought it. Forks for the loader would be good. What do you plan on doing with the bale spears? I didn't think you have a hay field or livestock? A rototiller would work on the 4010, but a plow and disk for the B would get a nice little garden ready pretty easy. Does the 4010 have a 3pt on it? A box scraper would keep your driveway(s) in shape and take the high spots off the yard so you can fill the low spots.

A $3000 4010 is nothing to sneeze at. Thats stupid cheap, considering most 4010/4020 models are going for $6000-$12000 depending on engine, condition, etc.

I'll have to check the tire size, but I think they are bigger than they need to be as I can't get my finger between the tire and the fender which is pulled all the way in. The big thing for looking to replace them is that one is leaking anti-freeze around a corroded spot near the valve stem, and they are pretty worn but as you said they work.

I have a farmer here that bails part of the property with cattle on the rest. My thinking is mostly to help him if needed or on occasion slide pole over it and have a gin pole for who knows what. Also he isn't doing well at times and I suspect I may have to take over for a bit from time to time and don't have a way to feed round bales in the winder. The 4010 does have a 3 point hitch but is missing the top link and drawbar too for some reason, working on getting one for cheaper than new. I guess I could look for backhoe attachments too. :lol_hitti

I was thrilled to get it for that, I'd planned on having to buy one in the 8-10 range at some point but kinda fell into this and had to jump on it. Then sit on it for a few months trying to get motivation to make it run but now am just looking for things to do with it.

You are in that tractor very reasonable!

A good tire man can pull the tires and replace without removing the wheels from the tractor. It's actually not a terrible job if you have good irons and a bead blaster.

I don't have a bead blaster, but do know some people that work for the local tractor tire dealership and one of them takes the truck home every night and weekend and offered to help me out if needed.

Nice, congrats war, hope you find fun things to do with it, like pick things up for no reason but you want to. haha

We work the fool out of that little tractor. If it lifted a bit more it would be perfect, but I only paid $4000 for a $10,000 tractor so I can't complain.

Complaining wouldn't do any good either, I'm in the same boat though, the deal I got on this thing is better than I could have expected. Also congrats on the new little one, better stock up on pink and size small work gloves.

I have once again failed to take many photos of the happenings but should do a little better going forward. I installed new receivers in both the Pink Jeep and my Lemon to bring them up to modern standards. They both have Bluetooth audio and more settings than I can understand. They connect really quick to phones and work well for streaming and the sound quality if superb for them only costing $70 each, I now have the same unit in my S10, and both of these vehicles. The only drawback is that they don't actually play CD's, but the radio in my shop does so I'll just have to play with it there. Here is a stock photo:

This Saturday work sponsored a home hazardous waste collection day and I volunteered to lend a hand. It is both a good thing to do and a way to see some random stuff people collect over time. One major thing I learned is that people keep WAY too much paint, I want to say we could have filled two semi trailers with all of the paint cans we collected.

One side benefit to helping is that you were welcome to keep anything you wanted as long as it wasn't illegal, sadly I couldn't keep the dynamite. :( I did come away with 6 gas cans, two metal 2 gallon cans, 3 5 gallon jugs, and another 1 gallon, also a 10 lb fire extinguisher, 4 old paper oil cans, a gallon of Gojo, and a few boxes of ammo. Here is about half of the ammo haul, I don't have some of the calibers I found so I gave those away:
attachment.php

Sunday was all mowing and cleaning up the place a bit more, the fence row is done other than some grading I need to do where I pulled the old fence. That is about all, hopefully everyone had a fun, safe and productive weekend:

JB, I found a solution to the CD issue. Uploaded all the CDs into iTunes and then downloaded them into iPods. You can find used iPods that need nothing but a battery and will hold several hundred CDs worth of music. Hook it up to the USB port and set it to play whatever you like. Mine are set to randomly play 1400+ songs. A decent 3rd Generation iPod 32GB can be had for around $20.

Bob,
I have most of my old music on an old iphone (Always connected to the shop stereo) but it along with many of my CD's has music that wasn't purchased by me in the days that was "fine". I'm sure there are ways to move the CD music to a computer, but I haven't gotten that interested yet. I 95% of the time just listen to podcasts anymore as even commercial free music paid for isn't commercial free. :headscrat

A few weeks ago while mowing I found a new hole and stump, or should I say the mower and blade found them. Lots of noise later and a bit of work revealed the deck was slightly bent where the center spindle mounts to it. Oh what fun, now that the lift was free and I might get a little reprieve from mowing I decided to take a chance and dig in:
attachment.php

The deck is now removed and pretty clean from grass clippings at least and I can verify the deck is bent a touch. The deck is welded 11 ga steel with a second layer of 11 ga which is ~1/8" (3.18mm) thick. I ran out of time to actually do the repair this morning so hopefully it goes smooth.

In digging into this I discovered the bearings in that spindle were not happy as well as the bearings in two of the idler pulleys. You can't just order the bearings from Hustler so pulled part numbers and think I have the right ones, but time will tell. The biggest find was that the powder coat or paint they used is peeling very bad and the steel under it doesn't appear to have been cleaned prior to coating. :headscrat That means this winter when mowing season is over I get to have it blasted and powder coated again. This will hopefully get me many more years of use out of it...hopefully.

I know where there is a bunch of NEW tractor tires, not too far from you

I know about some too Herb, but they frown on midnight acquisitions from what I've heard. :lol_hitti Did the labels make it to you, I think they expected them to be there Monday?

All,
I replaced the bearings in the spindle and it was really pretty simple, I think I'll stock a few for later and my even keep an extra spindle. Old out and new going in:
attachment.php

Now the idler pulleys were a different story, the bearings didn't press in. :wtf: It turns out the pulley halves were welded together after the bearing was installed. They only sell the idlers as a unit and I see why now. There are 3 idlers, two of one kind and one other, the only difference is the offset which is simply pressed in. One style is $12, the other is $22. :headscrat This is what they should look like new:
attachment.php

I ordered 3 of the cheap ones and will make it work. For the time being though I had the bearing and the pulley was off so break out the center punch and drill, then weld and you get ugly but:
attachment.php

I used the tried and true method for flatening the deck back out, a square and a BFH, it is perfect now... The deck is reassembled and ready to go back on.

Good work JB, rural yards can be tough on a mower, believe me I know!

That is no joke, this mower has a lot of thick metal on it and it has been beaten pretty hard by all of the animal holes that show up along with the fact that I'm mowing a old horse pasture.

My mower tends to find all sorts of stuff too. With all the branches and Spanish moss that falls from the trees, I normally take about 1.5 hours to pick up the big stuff before I can start mowing. But there is a limit to how much preliminary work I will do when there is 3 hours of mowing to follow. So the deck and blades still end up taking a beating. Of course, my neglect on the front side occasionally comes back to bite me and repairs are eventually needed.

Good luck with the repair.

Luckily I don't have to worry about the moss, but sticks, that is another story. I usually try to pick up the bigger ones as I see them throughout the week, but medium size I'll just get as I mow and if it is smaller than my thumb it stays on the ground. Like you I have 3 hours on the mower and about the same with a string trimmer but I usually only do that every other mow because I'm lazy. :bounce:

I think the repair will be fine, now just to get it back under the mower.

Yes I did get the box, sorry a little late on response. I think those are way too big. I did find one set left on Amozon. Should get in a couple days. Not sure what they look like cause the picture they showed was really blurry. But they were cheap . I appreciate the ones you sent, and as soon as I see the other ones I'll know if they are not right.
I still have your plates, haven't been doing much. I feel backwards while mowing with the push mower, and landed in the middle of a RR tie that was behind me. Luckily it wasn't the ones I was using to keep some dirt in, they all had big spikes sticking out about 10". Man that hurt soo bad, I thought I was a goner for sure. I heard bones popping and thought my fusion was damaged. Anyway, slowly moving around. 3 more lives to go out of 9.

If you need me to try again on the labels let me know, I can change the font size to just about anything, they will just need trimmed to fit.

Sorry to hear about the fall, hearing bones pop is never a good sound. I think I'm down to 1 or 2 left, my teens and twenties were filled with excitement.

As mentioned before I've been trying to set up the stereo in a couple of vehicles to have better sound quality, well I was down to just a few **** connectors so I decided to restock:
attachment.php

A note, I only use these on either temporary wiring or when I install a stereo receiver as they never seem to stay more than a few years before they become outdated. It is just quicker and easier to install. Also without realizing it I bought a used amplifier that was way more powerful than the subs I owned...well time to get a more capable sub:
attachment.php

On the left is the old and busted, on the right, the new hotness:
attachment.php

When I bought the new blue truck, the Blue Bandito, I decided to sell BP 2.0. This left me with the only 4wd trucks being the Blue Bandito and the girls Jeeps. Neither of the Jeeps have a trailer hitch, and the Blue Bandito has a sadly low front valance for a 4wd truck. I needed something that I could pull a trailer through the pasture and dry creek crossing. So naturally I bought a trailer hitch for the girls Jeeps:
attachment.php

Oh wait...no I didn't, I bought another truck. :bounce: But why another Silverado? Well it was cheap, 4wd, V8 (4.8L), and best of all:
attachment.php

Yep, a stick shift. :3gears: Part of the reason it was cheap was because of 305k miles (488k kms), and the output shaft bearing on the transfer case isn't happy. That will be this weekends project, I need to find more things to occupy my time.

Cool truck, you can never have too many trucks, cars, jeeps, tractors or tools.

I bought a 5 speed like in your new truck for the 62 C10 I'm building.

My daily driver is a 1999 Silverado with the same body style as your truck. I love my Z71.
It has some real nice bumps and dents from the former owner that give it a cool personality.

"Hello my name is ______ and I have a truck buying problem..."

What me... Nah couldn't be, I've only owned 13 Chevy trucks, of course 11 of those were in the last 4 years. Have you heard of the cylinder index? You take all of the cylinder you have and add them together, if they are over your age you are winning. I currently have 97 including lawn equipment. I may be forgetting something so don't hold me to that number. :wtf:

I know I'm not leading the pack and keep them all running that are outside, but I may be pushing the limits on vehicles. This is the first manual trans Silverado I've owned, but believe it'll do great for what I have planned. It isn't pretty, but that means I won't feel bad for throwing in scrap metal and taking it through trees.

Did you get a chance to count this weekend? I expect an excel document with all of the information spelled out?

Only 45 : 1 here in Green Bay. With some luck I may up that to 47 : 1.

So what 2 cylinder are you getting? Inquiring minds want to know.

I kept playing around with the tractor again this weekend after mowing but really didn't do any shop stuff. Except for when this happened:
attachment.php

I really need to get a torch, I used the pipe wrench, and an 18" crescent wrench to get it close, then lots of big hammer work. Finely welded up as best I could, not perfect, but functional:
attachment.php

Photo uploads aren't working right now for the rest I wanted to show so I guess that is all for now.

Good lord, JB! What did that poor bucket ever do to you?!

One of the previous repairs was almost as bad as mine, that is the only thing I can think of. If you've ever seen Boondock Saints when they talk about the rule of thumb...I needed rule of wrist to get this thing moved back. :bounce:

I think I have it figured out now. I've wanted to clean this part up for years now:
attachment.php

But didn't have a good place for it to go. I finely settled on the "dump" in the pasture. I don't have any photos of it, but basically it is just a collect all for **** over the last 90 years. I have it cleaned out enough to start filling it in with concrete chunks. Loading it was easy, just use the bucket and dump on the trailer, but not that much:
attachment.php

I ended up moving some concrete to the back, and swapped out the hitch with one I had that was flipped and it made it better but still not great. I got this one mostly emptied out when I had to call it a day, too hot, too much sweat, and not enough water handy. I was poorly prepared.

Day two was much better and this was the reduced load:
attachment.php

Still some of those chunks are too big to lift by hand so they were rolled off of the trailer into the hole. Lastly I had a friend say hi while I was mowing:
attachment.php

Only about 5' long, but still the biggest I've caught out here in a while. I took it to the house to show the girls but they weren't available. I set it free in the house and figured they'd see it soon enough but in the mean time he would eat mice. :spit:

I can't remember offhand, but you may be able to move the fenders up. For some reason I think there are two sets of mounting holes in them?

I'll have to look, right now they are pulled all the way in toward the seat but didn't look about being able to do that. Thanks for the heads up.

I think there are 36 automobiles, one compact tractor, 5 sears FF tractors, dozens of other riding mowers, and I have no clue how many push mowers. I really need scrap prices to go up.

That bucket may not be beautiful, but it will work better, and it sounds like you need a dump trailer now to clean up with.

If there was a slow clap emoji I'd insert it now. What is scrap where you are now? Last I went by there it was around $100/ton or so. I usually only go when I need something gone so I don't worry too much about value of it.

I'd like a dump trailer, and a bigger truck to pull it with. :headscrat

If my only option was hand unloading, I'd load the bucket up from the drivers seat, drive the deere to the unload spot, and dump. Fuel isn't that expensive :)

I'm sure I'll do that with some of the pieces left to go, but the dry creek crossing I have to do may prove challenging. I may have to do a dry run and see how it goes. The small stuff under 50 pounds isn't a problem (until the 200th piece) but the bigger ones in the several hundred pound range just ****.

Did I just make an excuse for not being lazy? :headscrat I seriously need to re-evaluate my life choices.

It would appear that a tractor with a bucket on the front could even out the approach to the dry creek. I am lazy enough that I would try it. Looks like you are making progress outside. Are you still counting 9000 steps for each hour your ride the tractor?

If there was a slow clap emoji I'd insert it now. What is scrap where you are now? Last I went by there it was around $100/ton or so. I usually only go when I need something gone so I don't worry too much about value of it.

I'd like a dump trailer, and a bigger truck to pull it with. :headscrat

It has made it up to a whopping $4/100. It is killing me.

I bought my dump trailer super cheap, and I figured it would get used a couple of times a month. HA. Someone is always using it. Anyone who borrows it knows if you break it you fix it, or pay me to fix it. Haven't had a single problem so far.

Going to the scrap yard and dumping it by pushing a button is soooooooo nice.
