I stumbled upon GJ when looking for ways the build a mezziene in my new garage. After a year of looking and "stealing" ideas I though I should post my little shop. My wife and I desided to move our kids from a 'got-to-big' town back to my hometown. This allows my wife to be a stay at home mom, brings us 5 minites from my parents, along with some other reasons...

Part of this was selling off my hot rod and down sizing from a 24x24 shop, with a 8ftx24ft garden shed attached to a 25ft x 15ft attached garage. We've put my Wing back on the road and bought an old Interceptor for my wife... Back to being bikers with a bike shop...

The house was an estate sale that the son had been squating in for three years with his dogs - which often were locking in the heated garage... Much cleaning, rinsing and re-cleaning was needed before I could ever get it ready for the epoxy paint. Which will cover dog pee smell very well. I work on the garage in the evenings after the kids are in bed (I like playing with my kids...) and when I feel i need a break from house renos (read as - When my wife tells me to go relax in the shop for an evening)... But enough reading, we here at GJ like pictures not words...

The name for the garage came from a good friend who likes to drink whiskey with me... I've broken most of Jack's Rules... I have a TV with statellite, PS2, and a computer to play my music and look at GJ. The bar fridge will be back in it's place as soon as I finish running more than the one plug that currently is there... Yes I do get work done in here, but when your window and door order shows up during a blizzard - you make room... and I will post some of the newer pictures when I remember to take some...

Started removing the ceiling/storage floor. If I have enough stuff to fill a 25ft x 15ft room (things that are only smaller than 2'x2')... then I'll throw out some stuff... Took our ceiling from the 8ft mark up to 12ft. I left the floor above the garage door for storing the stuff I want to keep. I'm making room for storing pedal bikes and many of my garage collectables. Tin and lights come next weekend...

I added a few pictures of how the ceiling remove went. My shop feels huge now and all I did was move the ceiling up 4 ft.

And, I know the Tuck tape looks excessive; but we just had a cold snap and I covered my attic access hole and sealed around the chimmney to stop the drafts.

The "top" became the middle this weekend... Some of those are plastic kits. One of my many hobbies that will be done in this new space. Heated shops are so much better than not...

And thanks. My main hobby seems to be renovations.

The other two members of the Whiskey Club came over and helped me put the tin on the ceiling tonight.

We salvaged the tin from a local chicken barn that was raised to turn it into storage... the dents, scrapes and other holes just add character. I'll finish screwing the tin and do the walls on Saturday. We finished with a standard Canadian shop tool at the end of the evening. You get a better view of the mezz that I left after cutting out the ceiling.

The crew is booked for next week to blow in my insulation. R50 in the entire attic will be great.

If I have more **** than I can fit up there - I'll have a garage sale and clear it out

Finished the upper wall tin tonight. I'll finish painting this weekend. I even got some of my garage decorations up... meaning more floor space was cleaned up. A few more evenings and I'll have my space back... and I can move around; finishing electrical and air plumbing. Maybe someday soon I can actually start pulling wrenches in here again...

My parents spent a few months there a few years back. I got that and a bag full of beer bottle caps for my collection. Dad worked very hard to try as many differnet beers as he could...

Added some of my garage collectables and cleared up storage space by hanging 3 boxes full of stuff. I've been wiring to add lights and such. My bench will be done soon.

My wife wanted a posing picture of me... I washed the memory out with whiskey.

It came from Midas Muffler & Brakes (franchise auto repair). They were a sponsor of Enduro racing in my area; one of the track techs was a co-worker of mine (and I pitted for a few friends) - I got a box of sponsor decals for my toolboxes - I have an issue... I like stickers and I like to put them on things...

I even decaled my beater - it added at least 10HP...

I haven't been a big fan of the metal used inside especially on ceiling but once you got the signs and memorabilia up, I have to say it looks most excellent. Great job. Keep the pictures coming.

The tin was $2 a sheet - drywall is around $14-15, OSB $15ish. Plus now the government satellites can't read my thoughts... It was a $$$ decision more than a style one. But I was the same - it seemed odd until I put everything up.

I used up a good portion of the reno budget on silly things like doors and windows for the whole house... and I still have a kitchen to start next year.

BTW, are you planning on keeping the old kitchen cabinets for your garage? That should be a good way to save a bit of cash.

The kitchen cabinets are being re-used in the kitchen. Sand and re-paint. Move a few. Redo the floor. You know, a weekend project...

Finally got some more lights up - I was tired of using a flashlight to see pencil marks on dark wood. I have all the extra lights on two switches - for lighting zones. Finished repainting my $2.50 ceiling fan to match my wall clock.

And my work bench is ready for paint... although my garage helper may need to move first. At 3-1/2 years old she loves being in here with me - I hope that remains this way for years.

Got power to the sub-panel now. So the picture of the electrical octopus running everything in my shop is no more. The previous owners even had an extension cord stapled to the wall to run the garage door opener. I fixed that and installed a few extra plugs for my reels and trouble light.

And the romex hooked to a plug end was for testing purposes only... although I have seen that and worse in some of the houses we've redone.

I've started building my compressor enclosure - and should finish this weekend. It is finally feeling like a shop in here.

I've been experimenting with different air intakes for my VERY noisy air compressor. I had decided at the beginning of this remodel that the compressor was going in a box to help quiet it down - my daughters room is across the garage from it.

So after much Internet research and playing with different intakes; I built my box. And after testing it today... I need to make a few changes.


[*]Interior sound deadener - egg crates, egg crate foam, small kittens... on all the inside walls.

[*]Route air intake outside the box (I knew this one - but haven't found a suitable solution). Might use a scrap of suction hose from work...

[*]Need to provide better ventilation - the electric motor has a 3" round shroud on its air intake fan - I'll have to connect an air intake outside the box.

[*]Need to latch the door better than the spring hinges do now.

One trip to the city should solve most of these problems.

And I got my temporary ladder hanger done - I'll build a fancy hinged latch at work next week. Also, I knocked off most of my "honey-do/reno list" for the day. This shop has been a busy place... time for a whiskey.

I started to paint the shop - as my 3 1/2 year old wanted to help me all day. So we started with compressor shack. I had just been looking at Jack's garage when i found this paint on the "OOPS" shelf at Lowes. My wife tells me it is a very manly colour... it even looks good with my Equipco cabinets.

On the compressor front - I created a fresh air intake for the electric motor. It ***** air into itself so a little ducting and a hole saw... fresh air now gets sucked in and hot air get forced out. It didn't increase the noise much either. I've started the compressor air inlet too, to make sure air getting compressed isn't hot air.

Cleared my work bench off. Because, after a few months of projects it was full of project bits. I had scheduled my weekend to get it painted. This way I can get the pegboard up next.

Got it all painted, the top is 5 good coats of polyurethane - strong and easy to wipe clean. Installed the bar fridge... wasn't getting cold after 5-6 hours of being turned on. Found a small break in a tube - must have been a causality of our move... So we modified the bench to fit one we found at a clearance sale on our Sunday night date... long story - short - I have a painted bench with a new bigger fridge...

Got the manifold for my air system built and installed...And during testing it; I noticed the compressor was running for a long time... it's not building pressure past 50 psi... just when I thought I was done and could relax

excuse my ignorance please - is there any reason to be concerned about the compressor taking in very cold outside air, or, over heating in that small cabinet?

I'm going to be locating my compressor in a closet under the stairs - your fresh air intake idea is very interesting.

Air compressors (certainly my oil-less) run loud and very hot. The air intake you see is sucking 20C air from my shop into a 35-45C cabinet (after the compressor has filled from empty - the compressor head and fill pipe are around 90-105C at that point.. I was just about to add a thermostatically controlled fan when my compressor stop building pressure this weekend (and I was looking forward to trying it with the door closed (to see about noise reduction). I have the air intake (for compression) routed just outside the cabinet (not outside the building) so the air being compressed isn't already hot.

In my climate, sucking outside air (-20C or colder) into a 90C compressor head creates way too much condensation. But I may figure that out yet.

Noise reduction was my main goal, until my compressor quit... it is old and is an oil-less - so off the Kijiji for a "new to me" belt-driven compressor head to mount on my tank...

The first beer/whiskey/wine after a hard day of wrenching/sanding/shoveling always tastes the best... And thanks, we did the last to places with resale in mind - this place, not so much... my kids can deal with selling it when they put me in a home...

I haven't posted anything for awhile... busy life, computer crash... compressor crater (before I could use the little shack)...

I've put french cleats on two walls, the white ones are on the main wall and will hold many different things. The black ones are my "lube" corner - an odd shaped corner that was being used as a junk collection point. Made a funnel drain system - all great ideas I "borrowed" from GJ...

Finished the air manifold and made a hidden latch for the whiskey cabinet. I have cleaned up and can now work in here - only took 1.5 years...

Hung up some more stuff on the french cleats - there really seems as if there is no limit to what you can adapt to this system.
