So, I got up early, fed the cats, and got dressed and took a ride, a nice scenic one on Georgia and Alabama backroads going up to Gadsden, Alabama, where the southern end of the "Worlds Longest Yard Sale" officially known as the "127Sale", is located. It was kinda crazy and was just yard after yard of, as you would expect, "junk". The typical clothes and glassware and household stuff. I drive a couple of miles past alot of this stuff till I got stopped in traffic and suddenly a guy pulled out from where he was parked and I though, "why not?" so I pulled over into the spot and started walking.

About a block away on the opposite side of the road was a man with guy stuff, tools, gas welding rigs and what have you. He had four Adjustable brand C clamps. All had a light dusting of rust on them, none of this built up flaky rust, just a light dust. They looked unused, not bent or damaged in any way. I got a 8 inch, two 6 inch and one 4 inch for $20, and two new anchor clevises for $6.

A little further up I stopped because I saw lots of signs, real old signs, and lots of iron. The guy with the signs had everything you could imagine, and the guy with the "iron" was, I thought, a little unusual. He had what was probably 50 ft of table stacked up, or heaped up with dutch ovens, iron frying pans and other iron cookware, all old, well used stuff, cooked on grease and build up from years of use. He must have spent years going to estate sales to acquire this much stuff. Apparently he liked iron. He had wagon wheels, plows, anvils (had a $450 price on one of those in the pic of the anvils in the trailer) He is the guy to the left with the beard. I heard him remark to the other man (potential buyer) "I just LOVE these old anvils!" I lusted over the hit miss engine (it was a large one) but didn't ask the price, if an anvil was $450, no telling what a engine would have been.

Well I drove and looked and drove and looked, and passed up lots of stuff. You don't want to stop for a single yard of stuff, you want the places where they rented out spaces and you have dozens of people selling in one spot. As it was I only traveled about 30 miles on the sale route. I did stop at a Volunteer Fire Station that was advertising "air conditioning, clean restrooms, good food" and they were nice. Great fund raiser for them. Had a couple of dogs and chips and a drink and cooled off and was on my way.

Finally got to a major highway intersection where three corners were all flea dealers of some sort or another, big dealers. Found a guy who had lots of tools and stuff. He had one of these Toyota Pickups with the camper mounted on it and "duals" on the rear. He fills up the camper, merchandise, tent, tables, everything, and Lord knows how that poor little four banger pulls it all, but he unloads it and then stays in the camper! crazy.

Anyhow, the guy had some boxes of discounted stuff. Said he needed to "lighten the load going home". I got one 4" and two 8" Proto 3/4 drive extensions for ten dollars each, and a brand new 3/8's speeder for $5, one of the no name, JS part number ones made by SK for the military.

I split after that buy, the weather was looking like it was going to get wet pretty soon, and I was way too hot. Long ride home. Got home just in time to see this (see last pic) appear in the sky, it rained shortly afterward.

Wished I could have driven on up to Chattanooga at least, but I just didn't have the time.

I would of probably spent some money at the sign place. I still have some bare spots on the walls of my garage that need to be filled.

I was going to go but backed out. I figure there is some deals to be had, but Im not to crazy about bumper to bumper traffic and large crowds, esp mixed with heat. The guy that sells the speeders goes to the local flea market, and he has had a small tool box full of speeders and extensions all year. I have been meaning to buy some from him, but I havent seen him the last couple times I have went.

Oh yea, the guy with the beard is always at the flea market to. He has a lot of cool stuff but is to high. In all the years of going I have got one thing from him and that was a red light, and I paid to much for it. Is it bad this is 25 miles from my house and Im not going lol.

I also live close to this in AL and I have been some times before, but this heat is too much. I would sweat on the iron and start rusting on what wasn't already rusted.

He had just put SOME of the speeders in a $5 box. Said his wife said they had been in inventory too long, and they needed to go. I notice he didn't put all of them in the box and left a good number of them on the table for $10. He had a box of 3/4 drive sockets with a sign $250 or offers, which I thought was crazy. They were all or mostly US made but I just bought a similar sized batch, about half Chinese, AND a Bonney 3/4 ratchet, for $60, and have a dealer willing to take whatever sockets I don't want, for a decent price. He seemed high to me, what I bought was "discounted".

I wanted to get as far north as Mentone, but gave up at the highway 68 crossing just east of Collinsville. It was too hot, I'd had enough and it looked like rain (I did get rained on leaving there headed toward Leesburg).

Next year, I'm going to Chattanooga and work south from there, or go north and spend the night somewhere.

Charles, I've went to the 127 sale before...back in 2004 and 2005. I've went along the route in Alabama and Tennesee. You can find a lot of interesting stuff, but there is a ton of junk and unfortunately, a lot of it is overpriced. :(

I'll bet that JS speeder is nice! I just sold a JS 3/8" ratchet to a friend who needed a fine tooth, and it was sweet. He really likes it.
That SK military stuff is great stuff from what I've seen.

Well I went this morning. Wasted trip. Lots of cool stuff, everybody is to high though. $35 for old snap-on and cornwell 3/8" ratchets, $500 Remington 1100s, $20 for small old beat up tool boxes, etc. Do these people like to just get out in the heat for the fun of it? I dont get it, but they might be making ok. I found lots of things I would get, if the price was cut in half. Wasted about 5 hours, wont go back next year.

That is a big problem with the 127 yard sale. I know of people who live on 127. I am here in Tennessee and I have a good friend that had a house in Crossville. I have heard the same stuff. I think a lot of people have heard about it and it has lost its value of finding stuff. You would be surprised at how many that are there are professional sellers who invade the road. The guy I know went to his house one time and it took a long time to get there. I find the best deals I run across is just going to flea markets and communities that are out of the way. There is one section of the road I have been to a lot when I worked in the area that I got great deals. But they were at yard sales and junk stores. The 127 yard sale anymore is Disneyland for people who like antiques. And like Disneyland the time I was there cost a lot to go to it and there was a lot of people there in front of you. I can go out with 20 bucks when this isn't going on and find the same amount as 300 would buy when it is going on. Out where I live I can find stuff anyway. Someone gave me a 2x4 goodyear sign from the 30s. I have a lot of tools that either needed cleaning or rebuilding. I like to find the old delta, craftsman and similar brands from the 30s and 40s. So you can find that stuff fairly easy. I also have good luck with used sales sites like craigslist. I bought a 50s delta 24 inch scroll saw for 75 bucks working.I got a new belt and painted it,it looks and works like brand new. A similar one new with any quality would cost 300-500. I saw a atlas metal lathe go for 20 bucks online. I called but it was already gone. So in a lot of the areas here flea markets, yard sales and sales sites online are the way to go.

Pretty much the same reason I haven't been back in five years. :(

I really should stop one day for this, considering I live on US127 in KY!
Sunday night I decided my old diesel and I should bond for a few miles. I probably passed 100+ sellers in two counties, and didn't stop for any of them.

I wish it was closer to me, cause I'd go just for the search! But Arizona is a bit too far away to drive.

Yes pics!! As far as not liking it I really do like the idea but what I don't like about it with the fame it has now lot of people there want more for stuff just because its famous now. I have found out I can do a heck of a lot better at flea markets in the area when it isn't going on or close to the time it is going on.
