Hello all WHyte here from nz.. just thought i'd throw up a build thread about my new pride and joy. a lovely little 9.6mtr x 4.2mtr single car and workshop.

the first two pictures are some of the base floor plans. the restrictions that i have on size really played a big part here.. with everything having to be off size slightly.

the space i had was inhabited by a dinky little studio on it which a few of the boys from the car club came around and gave me a had to clean the site,

My folks used to travel to NZ once every year or so on business...since i was a youngin I've always wanted to go! Looks like the makings of a very functional area in a tight space, can't wait to see the updates!

Council said ok and window is huge. Lol. There wasca couple of ineresting council approved items like the firewall and the likes.

Will post some pic with reclaimed doors and windows. Tommorow i think. Its looking good. rolling the desoto in tommorow i think.

I think it's going to be a nice little space. Sometimes you can't have it as big as you want and have to make do. I think it'll fit your property just fine.


For those of you wondering, 9.6 x 4.2 meters comes out to about 31 1/2' x 13'9".

What kind of wood is that? Is it a treated pine or some other natural colored wood.

Nice space BTW. It's going to be a huge difference over what you had.

Thanks all for your positive feedback. The "pink wood" is a treated pine..
I want with wood framing due to the style of the build. Weatherboarcs are an exact profile match to the house which is a 1909 villa.

and as for heating dont really need it as such. The weather in on the east coast of new zealands north island is lovely..
I was looking at insullation but due to the single glazinng on the the reclaimed windows and glass i decided not too.

It is an environmentally friendly wood treatment on Radiator Pine which is most common here in NZ and used for nearly ALL wood building work. The pink is meerly for identification purposes for inspectors etc.

Someone mentioned Lintel???
That is the timber beam above an opening. eg window, door etc.

My thoughts on this (45 years building experience) that what is used here is wowfully inadequate and not code compliant.
Not trying to start a war but the whole weight of the roof will end up resting on the door/window frames and then problems later with opening/shutting those things.

No war needed. Catching up with arki today will ask reasoning for piece of mind. Cos hey im a panebeater. Woods only new to me. Lol.

Yeah we are used to thinking high winds and snow loads here in the unpredictable USA.
Seem like you got paradise weather year round. Everything here is now built towards tornado or hurricane stats. I would be saying at least "hey I need to see some 2X6's up there.
I guess it's been all figured out where you are on the codes.

Did they sign it off?
What size are the lintels?
They look 4x2 or are they 6x2?
Even at that the opening must be less than 6ft.
Bit narrow for a car ...

This is a salvaged window I scored for a box of beer. lost one of the lower panes due to a lawnmower stone.. but still a great deal. its a HUGE window.

Roller door tension sorted and although she's small i think I'll get a car in,

I hate chrome fittings so i went with a home-made laundry faucet setup. it'll do the job

I don't know about down under, but here, you have to have a double plate on top.

It is looking good though
