Thermal Imaging Cameras

Thinking about getting a Flir C3 to help pin point a water leak, but I think I may have alot of other uses for it. Has anyone ever used one and do you have any other recommendations?

I use my thermal camera (FLIR E4) all the time. Mostly for electrical inspection, but I've also used it to find a wasp nest in a wall, and see that a hornet's nest was dead or alive.

I've tried it to identify leaks. It can be helpful a LITTLE, but it won't pay for itself that way.

Hmm. How thick was the wall? I’ve been trying to locate a wasp nest between deck planks and a dry deck.

Tile over greenboard behind a shower. Unfortunately, decking is much more insulating. You might have a chance if you look right before sunrise. Once the sun hits the decking, any thermal influence from anything living underneath will be erased.

I use mine to detect cold engine cylinders. Leaks around doors. Missing insulation. Plus all the other items mentioned.

They are also great for locating Hummingbird nest in trees.. The best time to look for stuff in a house is in the wee hours after the solar loading has dissipated.

Would one of these find the joist under carpet and plywood flooring? I would like to stop the squeaks.

Why not the Flir for you cell phone? It's a lot cheaper.

I asked them awhile ago and they said not yet but they were working on it. If I remember it was the carpet that caused problems.

I would pull the carpet back but in the past I could not get it to pull tight again. Probably windup replacing the carpet if I tried that. But then again that would make a good time to fix flooring.
