Hello,
I tried replacing my old thermostat with this one, http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053. My old one was mercury style thermostat that was from the 70's atleast. I'm just trying to make the place look nicer.

The thermostat only controls heat not ac. The house has a hot water loop circulating around the outside of the house along the floor which is heated by a oil furnace.

I took the old one off and it only had two wires going to it, a red and white wire. I tried following the directions with it and put the red wire in the slot labeled red and the white one in the slot labeled white but no luck.

Any sugestions? I will take pictures tomoro evening.

Here is a link to the manual in case you didn't have it already:

When you removed the 2 wires from the old thermostat did you note what terminals they were going to (regardless of color)?

Assuming they were going to the correct ones, did you keep or remove the jumper in the new thermostat? Since you stated there is no AC you should be using it...

Was your old thermostat a "line voltage" thermostat?
That was common on older systems. If you measure 120V between the red and white wires, then you just fried the new thermostat.

Do you have the jumper between RH and RC? And do you have the batteries installed correctly?

The thermostat will work fine you need to hook the Red wire to the Rh terminal and the white wire to the W terminal also make sure the dip switshes or jumpers are set for gas heat and it should work fine. the thermostat will have a 5 min delay when you turn it on if you see the heat logo flashing that should indicate the delay.

Thank you Rick I will try that, I also didn't know it needed 5 minutes to start. How come it takes so long? Shouldn't I hear the burner turn on right away?

nehog, I believe it has a jumper built into it. When I look into the wire panel with the screws it has a piece of small metal that is built into it as a jumper, I could be wrong tho.

Thank you everyone

Rick has good advice, I forgot about the delay. (Used to prevent short cycling, and problems where people play with the temp control...) Mine is not five minutes, but about 30 seconds but depends on the thermostat (and I don't know what yours has for a delay.)
