I got one for $14 at menards shows current temp and set temp. Very basic. and unless you want to do the run the fan only thing, or do a NEST style or adjustable one, you'll only need 18-2 wire. Got 25Ft of that also $9. Ran mine yesterday, and installed stat on the wall. For my Mr Heater 80000 unit.

I don't believe so,,, just set to lowest setting. BUT That's where the safety wall switch comes in. When I leave the shop, I'll turn it off. Cutting supply of the 120v to the unit. Check first pick, There is a single pole, with pilot light switch I'll use to turn heater on. pilot light will be lite when unit has juice.

Maybe a cheap Wi-Fi stat if your WiFi reaches that far? Might be nice to have the ability to warm up the shop from the house so it's not so cold before heading out. That would probably require 18-5 wire.

I have a cheap mercury thermostat. I wanted to be able to set it to 45 degrees and it only went down to 55, so I mounted it out of level. Then I turned it on and let it stabilize at different temperatures, marking the new temperatures.
