Just want something a bit better then what I have now. I am a weekend DIY guy. I have a few 3/8 ratchets, and a 1/4, and 1/2 from Husky, but they are not fine tooth and just low quality. Anyone have these are they decent? I am not looking to spend alot, dont do this for a living, but do want something decent. Thanks, Tom

Some like those, not exactly my type, I go cheap or nice, HF or Snapon.

I posted in Hot thread too with Menards clearing out Tool Shop 72-tooth ratchets. Then their house brand Master Force is made in USA by Allen. High tooth count too.

I always hate to suggest Proto 24-tooth ratchets, as it brings awareness of it's superiority and leads to more people bidding on what I'm looking for - but since I'm not in a buying mode, you can do no better than finding some Proto pear-head goodness.

You will never find a better ratchet than a 24-tooth Proto.

Huge step up from the standard Craftsman ratchet. I have owned all three sizes. Only kept the 1/4. Nice ratchets, but they are imports and if you are going import, then you may as well get some better Harbor Freight, Duralast, or Gearwrench ratchets and pay a good deal less for just as good quality.

Just buy this!!! Super nice pro quality ratchets with great warranty and well......less expensive. Once you get into this quality level, there is little or no difference in quality and function between the Williams ones linked below and Snap-On or other $100 per piece ratchets. (ive owned both...and keep grabbing the williams first) I have the same Williams 3/8 ratchet and can assure you it's top shelf stuff. The Craftsman ones are nice too..but a notch below the modern Williams ratchets I have owned. I believe these are 60 tooth.

Those Craftsmans are nice. I bought the same set for $45 when they were phasing out the USA stock. For that price I would get the Armstrongs from Epsteins. The new Craftsmans are Taiwan now.

What drive size do you use most? For me it seemed that it was 3/8" drive was always being grabbed. I would suggest getting a very good ratchet that you would use all the time. I haven't used the Craftsman premium 88 tooth ratchets but have heard good things:

I really think these are great ratchets for the $45 I paid for them, but there is better out there if you're paying close to full price. They are much better than the standard RP Craftsman ratchets, which feel terrible in comparison.

I looked at the premiums, but do they look to be a big bigger? What I mean by that is not as low profile?

I always order my stuff from sears.com (Most of my stuff is craftsman and some hf, few blue point air tools) and NONE of my Craftsman stuff says made in china. All made in USA stamped on it, has only some stores converted to chinese?

I am nervous to buy Craftsman just incase in the futre EVERYTHING is chinese I would have to give up my broken USA made stuff for the new chinese stuff.

Based on the reviews you guys said I may just look for a used snap-on set.

Those are taiwanese blue point re-brands nothing at all impressive and someone else (can't remember who ATM) sells them for about $10 to 20 each.

I never had good luck with them, plus for the money you pay for a chinese ratchet, you ought to just go to autozone or hf.

Those are not 60 tooth. The 60 tooth Williams ratchet don't have a quick release. I've owned one of the 60-tooth ratchets and it was very nice.

I have a set of Proto pear heads for "rough" stuff, and a set of GearWrench higher tooth count for "fine" stuff.

The Protos go on Ebay, etc routinely go for good prices. I picked up my set in black oxide finish for ~35 for all 3. Grainger also occasionally has some Proto stuff on clearance.
