Not a bad price. I paid $30 for just a single step bit like the bigger one in that auction. I'm sure the grades of metal used in the cheaper ones aren't as strong as the more $$$ ones like everything else.

If you are going to use it a lot get better ones, if not those should work fine.

Check out harbor freight.

Mine look very similar and were about $5 at the store..

It may depend on how much and what kind of metal you are going to be drilling into..

If you check the other items the seller has listed it looks like he's posted the whole Harbor Freight catalog.

HF has a similar listing for $14.99 plus $6.99 shipping:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91616

This seller wants $9.99 domestic shipping.

Check if there is a HF store local to you.

BTW, the seller lists the shanks on the bits as 1/4 inch, but the picture shows different.

Step bits are a must have when drilling metal or plastic, I use mine all the time. I've got 6 different styles, but I've had them for so long I don't remember where I bought them.

They work great on plastics with the single cutting edge. Some regular bits will break plastic because of the 2 cutting edges.

I order alot of items from this place. If you have a business or a "business name" at your home address they'll send your a free catalogue. It about the size of a very large city phone book with just about everything you'll need. They match other large company prices also.
They may also have a distrubition center near you to pick up your order at.

A friend at work just introduced me to these guys recently. They wouldn't ship the catalog to my P.O. Box, so they sent me the catalog on CD instead.

Would these be a good deal, or are they not good quality?

also how hard are they to use, i have never tried.. but a neighbor said they are a "MUST" if drilling alot of metal, so you dont have to keep stepping up size bits in the drill.

I can't speak for the quality of those bits, but I bought a couple of "Unibits" at a yard sale for $5. Now that I've got them, I don't know what I did without them. Not hard to use at all, just make a pilot hole with a regular bit first, switch to the step bit and go at it. It's easy to stop at the size you want. Way easier than drilling a large hole with a regular bit.

Those types of eBay sellers have great prices on tools but they make up their cost on the shipping.
At least they are up front about it. They list the shipping as a flat rate.
I don't have a problem with what they're doing, but I'll likely never buy anything from them. I can buy the same things locally at about the same net cost.

I recently recieved a set of these to replace my old Unibit. The Harbor Freight version is nowhere near as good. The step is too abrupt. The UniBit has a smoother transition that deburrs the hole. I would spend the extra and get the UniBit as much as I use this tool.

It might come down to what you're working on. If you're tooling around and not concerned with the quality of the hole and/or deburring (or wanting to screw up your Unibit on a unimportant hole), maybe the Harbor Freight will do.
