Pardon going off the beaten path here a bit but my Dad just shared something with me and I thought some of you might enjoy it as well. My 80 year old Dad writes poetry, mostly Cowboy poetry, and he also enjoys taking part in my old tool addiction. His face lights up every time I bring him over to check out some "new" rusty tool I've acquired. This is his most recent work.

THESE TOOLS

T.C. Carter

His father had held these tools
in rough hands
that bore the scars and callouses
of men
who create what is beautiful,
build what is useful,
and repair what is broken.

The tools themselves
were made by such men
in a time when both beauty
and function
were considered important.
They were built
to withstand hard use
and passing time,
but also to appeal
to the eye of the beholder

These tools had outlasted
his father
whose time had run out
as it does for all men.

So now he held these tools
in his own rough hands
and admired
not only their beauty
and durability,
but the history
that attached to them.

He would also create what is beautiful,
he would build what is useful,
and he would repair what is broken
using these tools
that his father had once held.

Yes.

Very nice. These words are my thoughts as I look thru many of the tools I own, your Father put it into words.

Does he publish these?

Very Nice! What a calming relaxing read, I really enjoyed it.
Now excuse me while I go out and bash on some metal. :)

He's been published in some regional stuff. Mostly he enjoys the writing and open mic nights. Keeps him out of bar fights.

Thanks for sharing a part of your Dad with us.
I think I will print a copy and laminate it and place it in the bottom of one of my tool boxes.
I will add on the bottom that it came from a Mr. T.C. Carter and was found on GJ.
My kids always get a kick out of it when I reference GJ as my source of any piece of info I share with them. You can see a little smirk on their face when I do this.
So hopefully many years down the road when going through my stuff, the smirk will reappear.:)

Thanks Ricky. My Dad retired from the Postal Service. Started out hauling mail in a leather bag and dodging dogs and ended up as a Post Master. He did an incredible job restoring an old turn of the century house I grew up in. I learned a lot from him.
