it is missing a "retracting spring". What is a retracting spring, and how hard is it to obtain? Otherwise the drill press works fine.

Thanks.

Its probably the spring that rewinds the handle to draw the spindle back up. Should be easy to get from a Delta dealer or online.

It's probably worth that in scrap especially if you opened up that motor. AKA: hell yeah it's worth $25!!

Oh yeah, please do not scrap that thing. I was just trying to put your question into perspective for you. A replacement spring is not going to be too difficult to get if that's all it needs. Post the model # when you get it. I guarantee someone on the site has the same one.

Are you freaking serious? $25? Go get that. Figure out the problems later. :lol_hitti I have the smaller version of that (12", that one is a 17"). Same VS mechanism. Even though it is china made, it is a good press. Especially for $25

Looks like the cover for the spring is there, so you should be able to replace easily. Where are you? I might still have one I would be happy to send you for the cost of the postage. PM me if interested. Ordered from Sears for a full size Craftsman.

Mine had a similar problem, which is why I have the one in my toolbox. the cover was too small and the spring a little too heavy for my Galaxy benchtop model. I wound up cutting the teeth off an old hole saw that fit, cutting a spring slot in it, and using a return spring for a lawn mower to get mine going.

You do realize that is a variable speed Delta drill press, right?
I'd pay $250 for it without a quill, much less with just a return spring missing.

Just out of curiosity, is that different than other drill presses that change speed with the belts?

Or does Delta sell a lower-end line/model that is a single fixed-speed?

Yes. This press uses a Reeves drive. Variable size pulleys. Just crank the handle to change speed.

Here's a video showing how it works:
