Thick or Thicker

I recently replaced the roof on my shop and now it is time to get a ceiling installed on my scissor trusses. I have been pricing out craft faced fiberglass matt insulation. My shop area is 26 X 28. To purchase the insulation R-30 will cost me an extra 200.00 over just going R-19. I will cover the insulation with white liner panels after it is installed. I believe that it is money well spent to increase the thickness of the fiberglass but I would like to hear other's opinions.

You'll never regret having more insulation...money well spent. I did R-30 between my scissor trusses as well and R-19 in the walls of my 30x40 and I am amazed at how cool it stays in the summer and warm in the winter. It wasn't heated until last year and it was always about 15 degrees warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

For my build, I did the walls myself but after I put up corrugated metal for the ceiling, I had a company come in and blow shredded fiberglass to a depth equal to R30. The price difference was about the same as you mentioned. I am in Virginia. So I don't have a vapor barrier other than the coated steel.

You can never have too much insulation... Be it for the summer heat or the winter cold.... More is always better... as long as you aren't breaking the bank.

That is what I was thinking also, for 200.00 not that big of deal or the life of the building.

Absolutely, go thicker. You've got to be up into the R-60 range before it starts getting silly and usually by then you are running out of room for insulation.

You don't mention that you are heating or cooling.

Run the R19 kraft faced between the trusses then go over that with a 6" non-faced bat running 90 degrees to the trusses. Should save you a little cash...

You don't have to guess at this. It isn't hard to calculate the payback for the extra $200. Of course it is heavily dependent on what you pay for heat.

It ***** to do insulation, it ***** even more when you deside you need more and have to add. with that said, i would spend the extra $200 now and go with the R30 and be done with it.

I think I have decided to just bite the bullet and do the R-30, should make the shop much more enjoyable this winter!

It makes the heater seem bigger, 200 juice here is cheap. You could and should use less than half that heater. If I was going to heat continuous the payback will be quick. Heating at low level doesn't cost much. My shop isn't as hot as summer sun in winter time but it never freezes.

Look at unfaced insulation. I had my whole shop done (30' x 40' x 10' walls) done with R-13 in the walls and R30 in the ceiling. It was cheaper to have them install it rather than me buying Home Depot and installing myself.

I found a guy that has a warehouse in a local city that sells all the name brand insulation for 30 - 40% lower than what home depot or lowes sells it for. I had him quote me R-19 and R-30 craft faced fiberglass.
