Thieves Steal Dying Mans Tools

Yesterday I followed up on a CL ad for the sale of a tool collection as a result of the owners poor health. It was a week after the ad was posted so I figured there might not be a lot left, but it wasn't far away and what better way to spend a Friday afternoon then tool shopping.

I was chatting with the gentleman's wife about the tool collection and why they were selling, and she disclosed that her husband had two forms of cancer and would no longer be able to continue his passion of working on cars, therefore had no use for any of the tools. She also mentioned how her husband and son loved working on cars together, and that her son had passed away from cancer two years ago so the tools weren't special to him any longer.

What she told me next still has me questioning how some people can sleep at night.

Her husband hates being alone since his health started declining, and when she was in the garage speaking with other buyers, her husband would call to ensure she was alright. At one point he insisted that she come inside to confirm she was ok, and when she went into the house to check on him two men stole over $1,000 of items. A bench vise, and grinders, and large collection of Dewalt tools that she knows went missing after they left, and who knows what else that she couldn't remember. She also said there was another pair of buyers who appeared to be business men (based on their clothes) and arrived in a nice car that had a company logo on the doors. She watched as one of the men continually had his hands in and out of his pockets. She confronted the man and made him empty his pockets. She said after his pockets were empty, there was a pile of stuff laying on the bench worth over $500.

I don't know if I can put into words an accurate description for the type of person who would do that. This man is dying and is trying to raise money to pay for his healthcare by selling his beloved tool collection, and you steal from him. I don't know that I believe in hell, but I would imagine there has to be a special place reserved for these types of people.

While I won't go as far as saying that the stories were fabricated to elicit sympathy from you I would question what kind of person leaves total strangers alone with thousands of dollars lying around that they could easily run off with? It sounds odd at the very least.

You ask how they can sleep at night. They sleep easily. A co-worker once told me, "If I didn't take it, someone else would." I stopped being so friendly with him after that.

Robbed once, then an attempted robbery and yet they continue to invite strangers over to their home?

Yes, there are plenty of horrible people in the world, but the parts of that story don't put something believable together for me. I learned working in customer service, some people love nothing more than to tell you how bad off they are.

So did you buy anything from them?

There's a reason I don't host garage sales or invite people to my place to buy or sell anything. When you get robbed, look no further than the last stranger who visited. Or who a regular visitor brings with them.

I once knew an older man, who every time I saw him he would tell me about the last person who had just left had stolen from him. I think he just thought every one was after what he had. Then I heard that he had even told some one else that I was stealing from him. I confronted him, and told him that I had never stolen any thing from him. And I never went back.
If some one did steal from the dying man then they were low lives. I hate a thief.
So I guess I should ask did you go and buy anything from the couple?

I was scanning topics and misread the subject at first as "Thieves Die Stealing Man's Tools". That would be a lot more satisfying... what low-lifes!

He was dressed like a business man and stuffed over $500 in tools in his pockets?

How much of a chance would there be that some folks thought: " this is my last chance to get paid" ?

Or "I'm going to go get my tools back" ?

Of course I have no knowledge of the situation, but I can see where it might happen.

But yes, thieves are bad.

The "ethics" of some people are appalling. Thankfully most people are decent, but a small percentage think of life as a death race and will step on their mother's neck to get a dollar.

I was visiting a friend and he wasn't home. I went down the block to see his wife's grandmother and her son had a trailer backed up to the front door. He was loading up furniture and digging through paperwork when I knocked on the front door. He said his mom had a doctor's appointment and he was moving some old stuff into storage for her.

Later, I found out she had had a massive heart attack and an ambulance had transporated her. She died surrounded by extended family and he went for a trailer to load up her valuables.

About a third of the people have no real morals, most of them are held in check by laws and social pressure, when those aren't present their true nature comes out.
