BUmmer - where in VA?

I'm in Roanoke (SW VA)

According to the detective there has been a rash of em around here lately, all targeting quick cash items, all in the daytime...I've got one thing going for me though, they found some blood drops where the dumb *** cut himself on the window. Hopefully he will show up in the system.

Theft *****.

When I worked in car audio, I saw the aftermaths of a few breakins when I came into work in the morning. There's always the classic but somewhat crude "ram a stolen car through the front of the store" method (several times), but others burglaries featured a big hole cut in the roof (cordless sawzall?) and the seemingly attention-getting technique of going after a couple of layers of security doors/gates with a cutting torch (not just the lock, they had to make 10 cuts or so over a 8 foot vertical line). You would think the last would call some attention to itself, but no one noticed and they didn't trip the alarm until after they got in. The owner of one of the shops I worked in was a Russian immigrant (he came over in the days of Brezhnev, very pre-Glasnost) and fervent NRA supporter. He tended to show up with with a loaded Uzi, Walther PPK, and who knows what else but was always disappointed.

As for myself, I've worked at home for a long time. Before I had children, I kept a loaded shotgun next to my desk, but now maybe I'll just bark really loud at intruders. :)

Check the local pawn shops...!

I,ve been hitting them, have not seen any of my stuff, but dang gone it I keep seeing stuff to buy, that I just cannot walk away from. Just the other day I got some near new S/O combo wrenchs 24, 30, 32, and 36 mm for $45 bucks. I just find it hard to beleive that those guys did not know that they were worth a lot more than that. That same shop I've been picking up S/O combos (normal sizes) for around 3 bucks each. They are probably buying hot stuff and pricing it for quick turn around. Makes me feel bad that I'm getting somebody elses stuff for a song...and somebody is getting my stuff for the same.

Brocoman, you might call some of the pawn shops and let them know about the theft and how to ID your stuff. I did this years ago after thieves hit the garage and a couple of the pawns were really interested in helping out. Never got anything back, but it was nice to know someone was willing to help.

Some guys on the board complain about marked tools, but this is why I engraved my name or initials on my tools.

Is this a good idea?:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

There is a man who has / had a vacation house in florida. When he would leave that house, he would mount a shotgun to a frame he had built. The shotgun had some sort of linkage so that it would fire when the door was opened.
A kid broke in and got shot. The old man is now in prison.

And thank God for gun safes, they did not get any of those!

That's a first, anti-gun thieves.

Kidding aside, that really *****. I think you did the correct thing going with a security company. It won't be full-proof but it makes your property less attractive to thieves. Do insurance companies give discounts for this?

Where I walk my dog daily is at our neighborhood dog park which parking is at the end of a dead-end street. The last three months or so, we've had multiple car break-ins and tires slashed and two houses being hit. We've had meetings with the neighborhood board on what we could do. Very common sense stuff.

I personally had to call the police and report a house break-in, warned another that garage door was left open at night (twice), and a car that seemed to be casing the area (3 times on 3 different occasions, driving thru very slowly).

Sometimes its a wonder others aren't aware of things happening around them. With the house break-in, it was a warm day and the park was full of people. Thirty feet to the entrance/exit to the park is the first house's front door and it was wide open (you don't leave door open next to a fence-less dog park) but the windows were closed. Went to knock but nobody was home. Talked to neighbors and we took a quick look around the outside of the house. That's when people started to realize something was up. DUH! (BTW, the broken window as 10' from where everyone was standing).

Theft *****. I'm still mad about stuff taken decades ago.

I'm not sure most if any alarms are worth a hoot. What I have heard a thief will do is throw a rock through a window, then watch what happens from a safe distance. If the cops don't see any sign of a break in, after a couple more rocks they don't show up.

Or a thief is in and out in less than 3 minutes.

Lights and cameras are what I expect to see more and more of.

Main thing that will happen soon or later, legalize drugs, and remove the root cause of most theft.

That's why you use 40Lb motion detectors instead of window tape. I put an alarm on my place myself, and the only difficult part of it was formatting the panel. Motion detectors cover all glass windows (including overhead doors) Those doors are locked with padlocks. I have a slider in the office that has a door switch, glassbreak detector (that also covers the main entry door), and a siren right by the point of entry. There is also a motion detector in there, too. The shop has a 190 DB horn pointing down at the bays from the ceiling (you'd have to get a ladder to get to it) and it's literally ear piercing. Beside that, there is a strobe that trips for confusion. Motion detectors cover every window. I also have a rate-of-rise heat detector for fire coverage. Outside, I installed a 190DB horn hidden that points at the apartment house next door. This system does dial out when set off. The control panel is hidden. Every toolbox inside is locked, and there is only one dim nightlight (up high) to cut down what can be seen through the windows/doors at night. The shop is buried into a hill so there are no back doors/windows.

So basically the easiest way in is through a window (especially through the overhead doors). The only delay on the alarm is the main entry door (20 second delay to punch in the alarm code) They'd have to kick it in (it's reinforced and it does swing in) no easy task and it is right in plain sight of the road. And if they break the (door) window first, the glass break picks it up. Any other entry , the motion detectors will get them.

A note about the motion detectors: I used 40Lb detectors just so they won't be tripped by anything smaller than 40Lbs (I.E. mice, small dogs, things accidentally falling, etc. I actually had a large column speaker crash off the wall and that didn't set it off). People set them off, and I have checked them with some small kids and they set them off also. There is a place down the street that had a florescent tube burst at night, and even though it wasn't that close to the glass break detector it still set it off.

Bottom line is if they want in, they'll get in. I made it as difficult as possible to get anything in the narrow window of time they would have inside, and anyway inside trips the alarm (I even made allowances for someone cutting a hole in my storeroom roofs to get to the control panel if they even knew where it was) Once they get in, the combination of the ear-piercing bullhorn, strobe flashing (giving it's night time) the dial out to the police, the fact that every door is dead bolted, and the overheads are pad-locked and most everything inside (valuable and/or small) is secured makes the chances of what they are going to get very small. That, and you should see how pissed the neighbors were the few times I accidentally set it off (they'd probably club the thief down just for waking them up)

Where I am is a very good area, but there has been some smash and grab from people from up-Cape looking for targets. You have to think like a thief, "Where would I enter if I was trying to break in here" and set it up accordingly. I bought all the alarm stuff online, and installed it myself. It's not as hard as it sounds (if you are building/renovating a shop I highly suggest at least wiring it for the components, it is not expensive) my whole system ran me 600.00$ about five years ago. Also if you are going to connect to an alarm company, most are happy to format the system for you (really the hardest part of it) just to get your account.

One more note: I know people are going to post things about firearm protection. In Ma., you have NO legal right to use a firearm for ANYTHING especially protection of property (actually written into the gun laws, and the reason the carry permit reasons were changed from "protection of life and property" to "All lawful reasons") I have a permit to carry. and just pulling the gun on somebody, reguardless if he's breaking into my property (even if I'm inside when he does it) or threatening me opens me up to a felony charge (while his/her B&E charge could be a misdemeanor) The local police might not charge, but the DA certainly will. So firearm protection is not an option here. Very unbalanced/unfair but that's the way it is.......

Common sense (keeping doors locked, not leaving your garage door opener in your car - get a keychain type), good neighbors, and a big dog or two are the best defense. If you have windows someone can break in through, plant low bushes with lots of thorns in front of them (roses are great), put bars on windows that are out of sight, and spend extra for tempered glass. If you are going to use a gun for home or shop defense, a shotgun with #9 ***** loads is good because you don't run the risk of accidentally hitting someone a half mile down the road. Breakins **** but don't let fear take over your life.
