I walked into work one day to see a co-worker had taken my Snap On QJR-217B 3/8" torque wrench, put a 9/16" socket on it and started driving a 6" wood lag bolt into a utility poll to mount a small sign.

Naturally, I got pissed off, and everyone acted like I was the idiot for having a $300 torque wrench.

Years later, I've still never had my torque wrench tested to make sure its still accurate.

did you educate him on what a torque wrench was and how to properly use one?

Bought a 1/2" drive Matco CR10T off ebay.

Poor thing appears to have spent most of it's life being used as a hammer. The rest of the time it was used to short across battery terminals.

Despite all the hammer marks and arching damage, it cleaned up nice and works fine. Hard to believe someone would pay good money for a tool and treat it so badly.

I was lucky as a kid to have an engineer for the gas company as a neighbor. His basement and garage were like some kind of tool paradise. The man had a tool for EVERYTHING. Hell, he even had a STEAM ENGINE he machined himself.

When we were wrenching around with bikes he'd tell us were using the wrong tool for the job. And then come back from his shop with the right one and show us how to use it. Never loaned anything, but was always ready to lend us a hand to get the job done. And explained to my folks which tools would really help us. I still think of the guy any time I see someone else mucking about with the wrong tools. And I likewise never loan them the right one but offer to come help with mine.

At the end of the day, they're your tools, you paid your hard earned money for them and
you're proud to own and use them... You treat them how you want to, no matter if it's
camp one, two or three.... and if someone borrows them... well..... Your tools, your rules.

I will beat the **** out of some of my tools and not think twice, but if I borrow a tool I treat it with the utmost repect. Just like my toolbox, sometimes I shut my drawers a little to hard but someone elses I shut them easily everytime.

I guess my mentality is that it's not mine, I didn't pay for it and I don't want to have to replace it.

Gotta agree with ya, I bought the Wera Koloss because I figure I'd bang my ratchet like this guy: Last time I lent it out, told the guy, break it and it goes through your monitor, take it and your monitor disappears. He thought I was crazy till he wanted his own.

Personally until the first scratch comes, it gets babied, then once its been scratched it gets taken care of just not as well.

Thats why i would ever let somebody else use my ratchets or wrenches! I see these things all the time on my work!

This is precisely why my son never lets my father-in-law use his tools. The old man did it to my son's 1/2" Craftsman just once. It shows not only a disrespect for the tool, but also for the owner. My son and I both keep our boxes locked. Call me a big fat red one, but that's how it goes.

besides this not being the correct use of then tool with the risk of damage to the tool and/or part there is also the risk of damage to him and anyone nearby. If the ratchet had chipped and the bit hit him in the eye then the government inspectors have a field day with the person and the supervisor.
