We HAD an in house electrician at work, licensed journeyman BTW, that apparently didn't understand the reason for cord grips on SO cord drops. This picture is of a brand new cord drop he installed that I just happened to find today.

Notice the unused beam clamp hook just inches away that he could have repositioned and used. Also on multiple occasions if he had to move a cord drop a couple feet he would cut the hanging loop on the cord grip and just use a cheap 1/4" zip tie to hang the cord. INSTEAD of just loosening the beam clamp or pipe it was hanging from!!!

This was also the guy that was adding a component to a machine and hooked 120v to the 24v control circuit. Frying the PLC, touch screen control, and all the sensors. :shocking:

Needless to say the guy didn't last long.

Anybody else run into so called "pro's" that do things that make you wonder how they dress themselves in the morning?

You wouldn't believe the number of "electricians" we have interviewed who didn't even know what reverse polarity was.

I have worked with several electricians that sadly didnt know some basic stuff.

I onced worked for a guy who had a C-10 license that sadly didnt know why a neutral AND EGC/ground was used when theyre both bonded at the main service panel. :headshake :wtf:

i had to explain it to him several times....

Just because u have a card or a license on a piece of paper from the state doesnt mean u know what youre doing...

Because I am so busy, all the time I get folks saying "Hire more guys". If they only knew how difficult that was. Right now, if someone is worth hiring, they are either working for someone and happy, or working for someone and looking for more money.

My retiring plant engineer. He hooked two 575v lines together across a motor starter. Fortunately one of the other guys stopped him from killing himself. He asked me a few day ago why I jump back whenever he's working in a box. I told him it was because he didn't have a clue what he was doing.

I have seen plenty of people working in both the HVAC trade and others that didn't have a clue. Union and non-union. That being said, I'm not claiming to the world's greatest, either.

Not to be one that wants to empty the stir pot but .... :D

Maybe he did not have a Kellum's grip in his shop and he will be back Monday to do it right ?

If not, just do the steps... point it out to your dept. super and let him handle it

I would not recommend personally attacking the house employee over the issue though. Too many people out here have anger issues, on drugs or down right just hateful. You could end up with a conduit bender flagpole in your hinny or a scratched up car. :willy_nil All JMO

This was installed probably 6 months ago, he's been gone for 2 months, I just happened to find it yesterday when doing other work. Also look close at the middle of the picture(sorry it got a little pixelated during upload), there IS a Kellum grip installed BETWEEN the Jbox and coiled cord that then goes to the floor. All of which are supported by cheap 1/4" zip ties.

I never once personally attacked the guy, I actually considered him a friend. When I first noticed him doing it I took him aside and politely mentioned to him that things like that are not going to fly. He said its fine and he's been doing it forever.

When I saw it continue I showed the pictures to our manager and he then told him not to do it. After that, everytime I saw an illegal thing he had done a sent a picture to our manager. The manager finally had enough. The guy was a nice guy, but apparently 15+ years in the trade were not enough to figure out the most basic parts of the trade.

Thats worse than not using one at all...

Call your local IBEW hall, explain your problem to a BusinessAgent.

He wasn't union when working here. Though I did notice on his Facebook that he updated his employment and is now the IBEW's problem.

Some of the problems I come across in the electrical trade are so electricians are not familiar with different parts of the trade. When they get a job in a shop and never did any class 1,2 and division 1,2 work or lite commercial work they will do the wrong thing. It's up to who ever interviews the person and even if they lie to get the job it's up to the responsible party to have the person doing the electrical work be watched and tested for what they know, no matter if there union or not. I always get mad at the union guts start with should of called a union guy they are no better than anybody else. I've had my run in with plenty of union jobs and right away I get told I'm taking food from there mouth and it disgusts me. Don't get me wrong about the union if it's ran like it suppose to be there's should be no problems with nonunion guys. The union has great programs to train people the right way it's the people that don't take things seriously union or not, it's trade that most people I think as well as other trades now a days that the younger guys coming in are not taking trades to heart anymore there just there to collect a pay check. Sorry for the rant.

Sorry but this doesn't make sense to me.

I will type slower for you next time.

I understood it.

You mentioned that when you saw him doing it, you talked to him about not doing it. But you also say you just happened to find it while doing other work.

If you knew he was doing subpar work not up to code, shouldn't you have made sure it was corrected in the first place ? If it's a safety issue, aren't we all responsible for safety ?

It was a job that I didn't know he had done(I didn't try keeping track of them either, I had my own job and was busy enough), and our manager forgot about. I usually followed him up anyway installing airlines, venting, and other items needed for a particular machine, this power drop didn't require anything else. I have also been crazy busy since January with over 50 new machines coming in and about 50% of the production floor being rearranged, some things moving only inches while others moving across the building. I am the only person in this building doing this job, I do have an assistant but he is overloaded building workstations and other wild ideas the managers pull out of their *** at the last minute. Most days I don't have time to even sit down at my desk to respond to an email let alone look in every spot of a jam packed 250k sq foot building with 30 foot ceilings he MAY have touched. Which is why everytime I go up in the scissorlift I take a look around as well. Not only for his work but the work of the contractors who built the building as well as my own from previous projects. I'll be the first to admit I make mistakes, but I own up to it and learn from them and fix them. And if someone mentions it I will correct it, not roll my eyes and say that's the way I always have done it.

BTW, I almost forgot, a couple days after he was let go we found daisy-chained power strips on a workstation. We asked the lead of that area who did it, guess who!!!
