So what does everyone do to make time in the workshop more enjoyable?

Here's my list of ideas...

Some are a little just "best practices" but I find when following these I don't hurt as much at the end of the day lol

For me I do not want any stereo music just quiet and the noise from the tools after 45 plus years working in a noise environment I appreciate being able to have little to no music or tv background noise. The other thing i agree is good lighting and warm when needed and white walls that better reflect the lighting.

A good stereo...with a cassette player, and Bluetooth. i don't own a single CD, but I like cassettes for the nostalgia, and streaming music for the ease. I have a pretty decent Optimus tape deck feeding through an Onkyo receiver to a pair of TEAC shelf speakers. I have a little Bluetooth receiver I got off Amazon for like $20 that feeds through the component side. Its actually a lot more stable than I figured it would be. Not theater quality..but darned good shop quality.

WiFi in the shop is an absolute must, and a struggle in a metal shop. Whether checking specs, ordering parts, or streaming music, its a non-negotiable item. I am using a Amazon Eero mesh network, and with some trial and error in hub placement, I get good signal in the shop. Not blazingly fast, but enough to stream music, and a YouTube video on the television here and there.

Heat and air are musts. I have a 24K Mini-Split that works very well. It will work better once I get a ceiling in my shop.

Some of this is done, some is wish list, some is dreaming.

All noisy stuff, (air compressor, furnace blower are the worst) isolated or muffled somehow, so I can hear my self think, make phone calls without going outside and talk to someone without yelling.

All switches and controls conveniently located.

I will never get running water, but I do have a Porta-Potty, saves me at least an hour a day running back and forth to my house.

Cord and air hose reels.

More light.

Organization and clutter elimination.

For me some of the basics are:
Organization
Lighting
Music
Something to drink

I don't have to deal with extreme cold here but the humidity can make things less enjoyable.

Heated/air conditioned
Organization/keep clutter to a minimum
A way to listen to podcasts, usually through my phone but I'd like to get some wireless speakers
Music streamed from my home network storage (NAS)
I have a TV in there connected to various free and paid streaming services, but find that when I use it I waste a lot of time finding something to watch or listen to
Coffee in a large insulated mug
A computer with CAD software to help me plan out projects

A good padded floor mat to stand on at the lathe, mill, or the workbench. To many suffer back and leg problems over time from standing on hard surfaces for extended times.

1. Organization.
2. Fridge with beverages of choice. Right now it's Perrier with Pepsi or RC. In the summer I'll add lots of Gatorade.
3. Right tool for the job, for sure.
4. Stylish setup; custom flooring, nice paint on walls, color-coordinated cabinets.
5. Good lighting is key.
6. Pegboard. I know some don't like these but I love a well-sorted pegboard.
7. Proper electrical.
8. A place to put trash and recyclables.
9. Plenty of room to store things in cabinets, #4.
10. A worthwhile/fun project to work on!

In my opinion, heat is a need rather than a want. In order to paint, stain, glue, finish wood and metal projects, it has to be warm. Loose clothing and gloves shouldn't be worn when using equipment/machinery with moving parts.

I have plenty of creature comforts in my garage; bathroom (no hot water), fridge, microwave, radio, PC, internet, snack cabinet and TV.

I want to be able to do what I need to get the job done or simply relax and unwind in my space....yes, opinions vary.

I'm still working on getting set up--so top of my list is getting the organization/work flow tweaked--and shedding the stuff that is really just junk. I can't think clearly when I'm surrounded by clutter.

That said, the project that made a lot of other things much easier was getting some decent LED lights up--the 'shop' now feels welcoming.

I kinda wish I wouldn't have bothered with the big TV. It's a 60" plasma, it took 3 of us to hang it on the wall (because it's so heavy and awkward), and after the first couple years, it got used less and less. I don't think I have turned it on for about 3 years now. If I want to have the TV playing while I work, I usually just bring it up on my garage PC monitor anymore.

Beer is for the weekends, at least for us working stiffs.
If the beer comes out, power tools get put away, except maybe for some harmless power tools.

I was gifted with a roll of mine conveyor belting. SERIOUSLY tough rubber about 7/16" thick and 24" wide.
I cut a piece to stand on and made it as long as my workbench. Easy standing and way warmer than cold concrete.

That doesn't sound fun at all.

One of the highlights of my day is coming home from work, shedding my gear, grabbing a cold beer or two, and heading to the shop. I sure don't get slobbering drunk....ever.....but nothing makes tinkering with the truck, or the jeep, or just general puttering better than a frosty beverage.
