Going to look at it tomorrow morning. If you don't hear from me again consider me a victim of another Craigslist scam, LOL. So story goes he's got a lathe been in the garage for years, good lathe, runs but needs to be cleaned up and he just wants it out of the garage or its going to the salvage yard for weight. $500.

This is the pic he sends me with the caveat the pic is cleaner and his just needs to be cleaned up.

If it pans out, I'll be the first to post "I ****"

Fingers crossed!!!!

Wish me luck...

I wish you luck, and hope it's a good one. Unless you're knowledgeable, I bet he knows more about it than you do..... Heavy old iron is hard to move in some areas. Doesn't make it less desirable to you if you want it.

Yep, for sure. I definitely don't know what I'm doing LOL. At the end of the day it's only $500 how bad could it be?

Main rule of GJ, you can't **** yourself!
Now if it does pan out to be a good lathe, loaded with tooling and ready to send chips flying, you'll have to go before the GJ board before being giving the coveted "you ****" award.:lol_hitti.

Did he say anything about tooling and accessories ?

Good luck

LOL, well that's good to know, ha, ha!

"Limited" tooling, pretty sure it includes a chuck and tail. Not sure what else.

Yeah, he hasn't sent a picture of the actual lathe and I'm not even sure if its a 10x24 or 13x36 LOL. When I spoke with him tonight he said he hasn't used it in 10 years but I'd be happy with it. He said everything works just needs to be cleaned up. We'll see tomorrow.

Thanks, will do. Is there a simple way to tell if bearings are shot? Should head spin freely and smoothly by hand? There are no separate thread gears on this machine right? Just check that no teeth are missing, etc. on gears that are mounted on machine?

Here's a video I found (different machine). I'm hoping it's the 13x36. He told me 13" swing, 36" between centers, about 6 feet long and 2500 lbs, so I think it is the bigger machine. Not sure why he sent me the pic of the 10x24, I didn't even ask for a picture, LOL...

Cgrutt,
Finding that lathe for 500$ is PowerBall luck. Hope you get it. Last week there was a Clausing lathe near me that looked like it was out in the weather for 30 years. It sold for 600$ in one day.

Be careful moving that thing. Don't crush a disc in the back. Ouch. Hopefully you can test it. Kind of puzzling that people with high quality machinery like that don't advertise it in specialty forums for machinists or somewhere like that to get something somewhat closer to its real value. Sure it's a PITA to move, but buying a new one is probably $20k or more? Movers would be way cheaper than that. But the PITA factor often means pricey toys go for pennies on the dollar.

cgrutt,
I've bought unpowered machinery before. Here's what I looked at:

1. Overall condition. Stored inside or looks like it was outside for 30 years? Are the ways smooth? Are any of the components broken off?

2. Move the apron along the entire length of the ways. If it moves smoothly, great. If it hangs up, that's a concern, but may be adjusted out.

3. Move all of the other controls back & forth, as far as they can go. you want smooth movement and little backlash. BTW: Expect some backlash. Also, sometimes if the movement isn't smooth, it just may need some oil.

4. Spin the chuck when out of gear, should feel smooth. Also, try to wiggle the chuck, should be no movement. If so, you have a problem. Put the chuck in gear. You should not be able to turn it or you should be able to turn it with the gears, depending what gear you're in.

5. Very important: Look inside the gear box. Anything broken of if there's metal chunks in the oil, there are problems. Deal breaker.

6. With the motor, you can check the resistance of the windings (very little resistance & close to equal resistance between the windings is good) and check to make sure that there is NO continuity between the motor terminal & the machine frame (ground).

From the idea that I got from your original post & picture, you should have little to worry about.

Edit: Moving it should be easy. If it was me, I'd just call a tow truck and pay them to do it. That's how I got my milling machine.

I am not crazy about the picture not representing the actual lathe. I would need to see a picture of the exact machine that he is selling before I pursued it any further, but that is just me. I hope it goes well for you though

So I met the guy this morning. Turns out I was speaking to somebody else last night that represented himself as the owner but I met owner today. He never gave me an address I had to meet him at a dunkin donuts and followed him to house. I was getting more leary by the minute but glad I stuck it out. Turns out he was a really, really nice guy. He bought the lathe about 25 years ago for $2700 from a machinest who had a heart attack and died. Not sure if he died after he bought it or if he bought it from his wife/estate. No mattter. The guy's a welder and used it pretty infrequently for about 12-13 years and then moved. He moved it into the garage of a rental property that he owns and it has been sitting there for the past 12 years unused. He sold the property and has to clean out garage. Just wants it gone. He offered me a really nice metal cut off saw as well but I didn't have any room for it, LOL... It was another big machine.

It's a 10 x 24 but not the hydrogear. It has power feed both along the ways and across them. All the gears change by levers on the machine. The machine had what looked like 5 years of grime on it, LOL. He apparently covered everything in grease when he stored it and it has just been collecting dirt

So it took the two of us about 2 hours to get it loaded on my trailer. Fortunately he had a great come-a-long and long chain or I don't think we would have gotten it loaded. He also gave me a couple sheets of plywood and a sheet of 3/16 sheet steel to put it on because the weight of the machine was actually breaking the boards on my trailer. Fortunately, he welded up a carriage for it to move it around and that came with it as well.

This is what it looked like when I brought it home. Pic actually looks better than it did in person, lol.

Spent about an hour on it with nothing more than a rag and can of break cleaner. Haven't even taken anything apart yet. It's seems to be in really good shape. Everything turns smoothly, all the major part are there, all the knobs/handles engage and disengage, chuck turns freely and smoothly by hand, oil levels are good and oil is reasonably clear and clean.

Haven't started it up yet but have no reason to believe it doesn't run.

Seriously pumped about this. Can't wait to clean it up some more and get it running.

Now just have to figure out how to get it off my trailer :)

At least you got it home safe. Anybody remember that video of a lathe being chained on a flatbed tow truck and as the chains are tighted, the lathe breaks in half?

Wow, that is GREAT Score for $500 snagging that Cincinnati lathe.

You can NOT earn any suckage as you alluded to Pre-Suckage to yourself. ;)

Good luck getting it unloaded in final resting place.
