I have a 2-4 year old craftsman 26 or 33 gal compressor. Its one of the oil-less quiet motor ones that you see on sale for $300 or so.

Its been great for me these past years but i never put it to a stress test, mainly impact wrench which is just burst of stuff. Today i picked up a cutoff wheel because some swaybar endlinks didn't want to give so i had to cut thru them. So it was going at it non-stop for about 5 minute on one side. I stopped to switch over to the other side, i gave the compressor time to catch up and shut off. I go at the other side and about 1/4 of the way there the compressor should of kicked on but it didn't and i was losing power.

I thought maybe i unpluged it or hit the OFF switch. I did neither but god dam that plastic cover over the motor is BLAZING hot. So i let it cool off and took a break, about 20 minutes later still blazing hot but it will not KICK ON. I think i burnt it up. I thought maybe some overheat protection kick on. I waited for it to cool down, came back out in 2 hours and still nothing.

I dont know too much on compressors but maybe i cooked this one.

They had a recall on some of those compressors not long ago. I think mine is a 20 gal and the motor burnt up about two years ago. I got the recall letter in the mail a few months ago, dragged the compressor out from behind the shed, dropped it off at sears and a month later had a brand new motor. It runs great now. Search online for the recall and check your model number.
