Think This Old LYON Cabinet is Worth Saving?

It was a freebie. It has been outside for a few years used as fuel storage.

Just one shelf, some rust through on the bottom lip of one door as shown. Bottom shelf has just surface rust, seems pretty solid otherwise.

I'm thinking not a full resto, just a wire wheel a little primer and paint.

Spend the $30 for paint, power wash the inside and a few hours work, or scrap it?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and the gas cans came along with it.

Regards,

If you are having to ask, I would say no. It might be suitable to put under a shelter to keep a few things in, but you won't be proud of it in a shop or garage. I have bought them at auctions and sales for $50.

If it was mine I would wash the thing and put nit outside to keep my shovels and some garden stuff in

Id ask how heavy is it? If its one of their heavier (10-14 gage) lines then its well worth it to clean/weld/paint it up. If its the lighter (~18 gage) line, then its your call. The difference in product lines is the difference between $20 and $200.

It is heavy and built well, that's the dilemma. Seems too nice to throw out. The first poster is right, it will never be anything nice to look at. I looked on CL and saw cabinets like it selling for $150, much nicer w/ shelves.

I've got too many projects as it is.

I might just see what she looks like after a power-wash and go from there.

If I left it outside it would just be a home for mice/squirrels. I'd keep it outback of the garage and use it for fuel as well, but I don't trust the neighbor's kids not to mess with it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Regards,

.

Well, it cleaned up OK so I'm going to spruce it up. First I'll hit it w/ a wire wheel, some primer and a top coat. I had a 4'x4' piece of Advantic left over and have cut it to make two shelves.

It should work fine to store my woodworking power tools.

Regards,

.

For the price of FREE, you can't beat it (when it's a Lyon).

Good luck at restoring . . . and You **** !!

Ok,

I think it came out nice. $15. worth of Rustoleum Industrial Gray and 30 min. with a wire cup brush on a rotary grinder, and she turned out ok.

It only came with one shelf so I cut some leftover Advantech to size. Since I dont have any shelf pins I'll probably just drill through the sides to attach the shelves.

Have a gander........sorry for the glare but I'm still using temporary lighting.

It DID come out nice, congrats!

I don't know why you'd consider tossing it? You could have painted it any color (and still can) and bought vinyl graphics for it.

There's a guy on eBay that will make whatever you want. I got him to make me some Coca Cola graphics in white vinyl then painted a small refrigerator with Rustoleum Regal red and it looks like THIS in my shop:

Yours could say, Craftsman or your favorite sports team, Car brand, whatever.

Looks very nice now. Great job. Did you do anything to patch the rust holes?

it is always better to save something than throw away if it is solid, we are too much of a disposable society

Good for you. I like to see a little effort put into these old cabinets. A little rust is no big deal. Currently cleaning up a Kennedy bottom box I snagged on the cheap. Finished cleaning the top box, and it looks new.

I'd love to find a large cabinet like yours. A couple hours of work, and it's new again.
