Was browsing for a bolstered screwdriver Set, when along came polly in Google's search results,

Its not one continuous piece of metal, kinda defeats the purpose of bolstered screwdrivers and high torque situations. Why would HF market such a thing? :eyecrazy:

I already ordered my Kobalt Made in USA Set from Lowes :)

He should have just attached the screwdriver to the vise (which he did of course), but should have used a wrench instead of hacksaw. The riveting is a work of art by the way (pun intended). :p

Would people be interested in a video of cutting open chiseldrivers from the major brands? I've got that M12 Bandsaw that I think would blast through a handle like nobodies business. I think I'd probably cut it lengthwise though to show the cross section of the handle. If people would be interested in that I can start collecting some test subjects. Obvious ones are the Wera Chiseldrivers, the Felo 550 series, Harbor Freight Bolstered, the Kobolts with the bolster and a Snap-On of some make and design. Anyone have any thoughts on that idea / suggestions?

When I pay $12.99 for a full set of screwdrivers I expect quality! :willy_nil

That idiot is such a ***** with tools that I am surprised he has any fingers.
It was painful just watching his moronic attempt at sawing the handle.
Apparently his first use of both a hack saw and a vise.

That may very well have been the proper way to use that tool actually. If you'll watch again, you'll hear him say how he puts the screwdriver into a "clamp". So perhaps with that style of clamp, that is correct.

Good to know although it would be much simpler to use a multimeter and test for continuity between each end (as long as each end do not touch one another)

The sad part about this is how stupid it could been avoided by making the shafts an 1in or 2in longer with a hex end and been done with it.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but for those who may be thinking the Chinese supplier of these just tried to "fool" the stupid US buyers, I can say having worked with several Chinese and Asian suppliers in recent years, that is very likely not the case. The Chinese looked at some real bolstered screwdrivers, and very simply copied the appearance of them, in the lowest cost possible way (which would be with less steel and shorter lengths of it), for sale to us. They very likely just did not understand the purpose of the bolstered end and thought it more like decoration. You would not believe how many times I've had to explain very basic concepts like this to Chinese suppliers, who simply did not have anything like a clue as to function. Quality defects were rampant too. They were more than willing to improve and do things better, but did NOT ever volunteer that in anything they made, only after getting found out about it and in trouble from it would they consider any changes. It was like trying to get a factory full of high school summer interns to make complex quality products without managers who understood what the product needed to be. - Paul

Wow... very painful to watch a grown man use a hacksaw like that. Truly reminds me of a 8 year old boy playing in the garage, except he would get in trouble for cutting up a useful tool just to make a point.
If our actor had any skills he could weld the bolster to the screwdriver or slide a nut over the end of the shaft and weld it from there if he really needed a bolstered screwdriver.
But now if he can clean up his hatcheted hacksaw work he would have a screwdriver to open his paint can lids. :willy_nil:willy_nil

This has been my experience with suppliers in China as well. You can get quality product from there but you darn sure better clearly define your requirements.

So willy help me understand something cause I'm a bit baffled. Ya finally get a chance to use the thumbs down icon for its intended application. But you elected to use the warning one instead which when purchasing from HF is more or less a given. I thought we had educated you on the correct application of proper usage for said icons. I guess we have failed :(

Btw, you owe me 3:42 of my life back. Not all of that video was worthless, since it's has great educational value on how not to use a hacksaw. Plus now I know who was the root cause of the safety razor knife ****, obviously it was this guy.

im sorry but that right there is ******* funny

I can assure you didn't fail. You did guide me for the correct application of the icons. :) The exclamation mark stood for, "Caution: Kids, Don't Try This At Home" :D

The only thing this guy needed to do was clamp the hacksaw in the 'vice', they move the screwdriver back and forth. ;)

Just watching that guy gives me the urge to shout (in the style of Oliver Hardy) "Give me that before you hurt yourself!"

See this for the next instalment

Would be interesting for sure, that said - I trust my Wera and of course the Snap-On screwdrivers.

If you are going to do this, I'll gift/send you an Wera 9XX series screwdriver to cut in half.

Let me know via PM if this comes together and I'll ship it.

Kind regards,
Oliver

That's a kind offer but not required. If I screw up cutting it in half I'd feel bad if I didn't buy it.

I'll start planning it and gathering some drivers to test. Does anyone have suggestions in addition to:
  • Wera 9xx
  • Felo 55x
  • HF Bolstered
  • Kobalt Bolstered
  • Wiha Heavy Duty
  • Klein Demolition

Does Snap-On make a strikeable screwdriver? Craftsman?

Maybe I'll make a new thread to plan this thing out.

I don't think snap on makes strike able screwdrivers. I'd be interested to see how well the bolsters hold up overall. Put a crowfoot with a torque wrench and see how much they can take before deforming. Just make sure the crowfoot is 90 degrees from the shaft of the torque wrench or it won't torque to the correct value.

I had a Scottish professor in College who always said you can tell the skill of a Millwright by the way he uses a hacksaw and a file. I honestly think there is some truth to that. My professor would have had a fit watching that guy. Man that was hard to watch.

It was all I could do, to refrain from reaching out, and grabbing the hacksaw out of his hands.

I have that set, and have used the bolster and pressed against the end with my chest.

It would be handier with the bolster being on the shaft below the handle, with the top of the handle being flat.

Luckily, with my advancing age and weak grip, it didn't self destruct.

There comes a time when you need one of those automatic jar openers, just to get a pickle or some salsa.
