I dropped by a local estate sale the other day while on my way to work. Ended up, the estate was that of an old Chief Master Sergeant, long since retired. As I meandered the property it became apparent and later confirmed (via neighbors and friends) that he was deemed the neighborhoods Mr. Fix-it. I pause and think to myself, 'that figures'...for a Chief making things work was something of a requisite in achieving the highest enlisted rank. One of the sales agents mentions the basement workshop and I descend to the basement. Now before me, the workshop appears as a partially picked-over testament of past skills and interests. And, who would have anticipated a basement this close to the coast; this 60's era ranch....3mi from the water....is an interesting anomaly for the area.

His shop took up two little rooms that most probably had initially aspired to be little more than a poorly lit, cool, albeit musty storage space of canned goods and the like. The Chief's basement workshop was just below the kitchen...and equally important workcenter If I do say so myself! While missing in that days workshop 'formation', I'd have guessed that the Chief had some old but sturdy radio down there mumbling a steady stream of local news or maybe NPR. Hours would slip by as projects begin and end setting atop that old green stool. I'd have expected him to have an affinity for staying informed but for no better reason to have been able to hold his own when conversing on the state of things.

I do enjoy attending sales like this as well as the opportune barn 'pick' that sometimes results from my awkward request for permission to look around for shop stuff, or early auto related items (my hobbie). I find that a shop can tell you stories about it caretaker as does works in progress and those awaiting another days attention. I soak it in, staring across the room, my eyes moving quickly along the workbench. I focus my attention under, over, around, and inside...wherever the stashed good stuff may have been placed. But alas, the those orchestrating the sale,... having toiled many days pricing and preparing the boot for public pawing has destroyed any previous semblance of the Chiefs organization method or mayhem whatever the case...(my personal mode of operndi(sp) being of the latter). The Chief's possessions, having been orphaned now look for new homes in the gaze of strangers like me... there caretaker has moved on and will not need their services anymore. They are now price marked by ladies dedicated to the complete dissolution of this collection of worldly goods.

On my second and last day of the sale, (I had to go back)... I began to take a wider look at things in the Chief's Shop. Most probably because I'm thinking I may miss something if I don't slow down. I notice a simply framed piece of artwork trimmed in pine. A little cartoon with a short message... "THINK". Its composition is that of a pencil sketched caricature of a sign painter who has arrantly placed one of his feet in his paint bucket.

I immediately recognize the importance in the placement of this cartoon; above the primary workbench and eyelevel if perched on the old green stool now banished to the corner of the room. That little cartoon above the bench was there to remind the Chief to slow down or as my dad use to say, 'stop while your ahead'. So it was on my last day that I decided this little reminder is something that I could use in my workshop to remind me to..."THINK". Maybe this little cartoon could serve me as well as it did him thru the years. I'd like to think that the Chief was watching us those days and that he knows that one of the many strangers at his sale...'Got it' and was appreciative of the Chief's items they adopted.

And HEY,... for a buck, how can I go wrong?

Awesome! Great story.

You are absolutely correct in your observations.

When my grandfather passed 25 years ago, I was at his house/farm helping to dispose of the estate. I was noting how he had everything organized in his shops (he had one in the basement, and one in the barn), and it was one of those strange moments of mental awareness as everything made sense to me and I could see his logic and organization. Now was this because my dad did it the same way and I learned it from my dad? Maybe.

But you can learn a lot about somebody from looking at their shop, that's for sure. Anybody that looks at mine can immediately determine that 1) I'm a hoarder, and 2) I have ADHD, AKA NFAD (never finish anything disease). :)

+1 on grabbing the picture of old 50's gas station.

Even though I prefer Pepsi, that Coke machine looks like a keeper.

Ditto to the comments.. .now another project to come up with my own version for my shop(s). I too hope one day my son, grandsons, etc. recognize that trait (organized and logical shop) in me.. inherited from my dad and developed through education and experience..

Houndog, I searched the web for this picture, nothing. Any idea of who the character or artist might be or its source publication? What is the chance we could get you to scan a copy and share? Thx for considering.. Dennis

I would be more than happy to make some copies and send them out. Give me a bit to craft a plan on how I'll do this. If there's a few people that desires one...My initial thoughts are.

- reproduction cost will be minimal but believe it needs to be done on card stock.
- mailing them out may cost a dollar or two...how much is a stamp these days anyway...geesh
- I could establish a pay pal to cover that
- This would be a 'pay it forward' (ish) project for me and maybe the Ol Chief would get a kick from it!!

Thoughts????

AS for the art/author: I have no idea yet....I may know more after I take it apart to get copies. More on that later.

I, for one, would be willing to purchase one if/when you reproduce them.

Thanks all for the kind words and interest. I've done an extensive edit that I believe was needed. Take another look if all the socks in your drawers are folded.

As for the copies, I believe I'll do it....will probably wait to see something like 20 requests....I'm at 6 or so now.

thanks again

Gas station and think?

I'm in for one each. I will pay forward.

Any idea what Chief's name was? Might be kinda neat to be able to tie it all to together.

If your copying both the gas station and "Think" - I'm in for one of each.

Do you know what size you will (or can) print them in?

I love that print. Its simple but miles deep at the same time. I've been hitting estate sales lately and the way some of the retired military men had precisely organized a lifetime of tools, equipment, guns etc.. is impressive.
The estate sale folks make a mess out of things, dumping tool box drawers full of wrenches, screwdrivers and sockets into a 5 gallon bucket for people to paw through. The old men would roll over in their graves if they saw that I'm sure!

Can you reprint the gas station photo if you don't sell it for profit?/I'm sure the original photographer has long since been paid. Heck, the station photo may even be public domain by now.

It's something we'll all face someday, who will be the caretakers of our possessions? Will the unfinished project(s) be thrown in the trash, or completed by the new owner?

All the funds spent on tools, supplies and equipment, will the wife, or girlfriend get any money for it? Maybe in some cases, scrap price.

The clock of life is wound just once
That no one has a second chance
To change your very life of ease
Which you have lived just as you please
Knowing whom you intend to deceive
When they went they went on their knees

The hands go tick-tock every chance
They know they do this all but once
For time will not stay still and prance
While you forget your very chance
To wind the time so it could chime
And bring peace of mind at the right time

The sound you hear from time to time
Reminds you that you must keep in line
For life’s clock never seem to chime
Until the enemy steals your time
The alarm you heard sounds fine
Informs you that there is little time

The second hand at so fast a pace
Goes on and on to win the race
Not looking back to see the space
Fear it may meet with utter disgrace
So clock of life how do you dare
Compare your time to atmosphere

The things you do as time now stands
Will help shape you for eternity’s band
The ones you’ve rescued from false alarms
And those you’ve sheltered from life’s storm
Could be the center for your alarm
When time seems still and there’s no charm

The clock of life ticks on and on
For here on earth there is no man
To stop the hand when it strikes one
Nor telling it the time to quit
But there’s one who controls life span
He sets an exit time for every man

Ebay offers a "fixed price listing" that could remain up till I cancel it. So I could make it available there. This would avoid some of the pain of purchase and basically make it easier for me to handle the 'project'.

Now I have to decide the shipping container...I'm thinking the heavy photo mailer as the container...their $2ea

So while shipping could be dependent on the buyers location.. OR, do I add in a baseline shipping cost to the price? .

So a hypothetical(sp) shipping amount around $5 with a $2 photo mailer to the lower 48 and $10 for the print. So "Think" would run $17.... thoughts? sound fair?

From post #37 I'm at:
Think - 16 copies
Sinclair - 8 copies but it's outside my original intent and not sure if I can make that work.

I'll get back to ya soon. If this were to go into the operational phase...this thread would/may be considered a 'selling thread' might have to add a link on my sig line to a 'classifieds' ad that directs ya'll to the ebay listing. geesh...

Just FYI - that picture of the Sinclair station is barely 600x600. You might get a decent print on a 4x6 or 5x7 but anything for sure over 8x10 will be grainy as all get out. If that isn't a problem, then let 'er rip. Search Google Images for "Sinclair Gas Station" and you'll come up with some images in the 1024+ pixel range that will print much cleaner. Not many, and not the one above but some.
