thinking 5 ton package unit for the garage

I have been looking at the best way to do the AC myself. Seems like a package unit has a lot of advantages, most of all being home owner friendly. I also find a lot of used/reconditioned units in the area. I just run electric and duct which I can do, but I dont have to break the seal on the freon system, which I cannot. I am thinking I can mount this about 8-10 feet up on the outside of the wall and it is out of the way of everything. To me its almost the same as a big window shaker which is what I have now.

I read that there is a duct that is made to replace a 8x16 block, basically it is the same size and reinforced to take the load of the block you remove. Does anyone know where I could find these? I did a couple searches but came up empty.

Package unit are NOTORIOUSLY inefficient ! Try to find the SEER rating on what ever you are buying.

How big is your garage?
5ton is generally for a whole house

And for the system to operate efficiently and not freeze up you are going to need more airflow that you are going to fit through a block sized duct

the building is non insulated block. 40x60. I currently run a 2 ton in the 20x40 section with the lowest roof and it is tolerable in the summer. I did insulate the remaining 40x40 roof (did not on the 20x40) so it should be much better in there. but figuring the 20x40 is just cool enough with a 2 ton window shaker (likely also inefficient) I was thinking 5 ton since they are readily available from double wide applications. I dont want to live in there, I just dont want to work in an 85F environment. Also it really cut down on rusting of my machines.

if I go with a used split system I would need to get the system recharged or whatever. I dont have an AC buddy to do this for me.

I havent found anything yet but I saw this one, no seer rating specified but it is a heat pump. what should the be the minimum seer to accept?

also the duct there looks like a 12"? is that right? It calcs to 113sqin, the 8x16 block is 128sqin

Id use a heavy piece of angle iron on the front and back side of the opening in the block extending at least one block to each side of the opening depending on how high up the cut is in the wall and how much load its actually carrying.
As far as the opening size Id look at the rough opening size for the ductwork coming from the package unit itself,Dont forget the cold air return also.
Dont forget to put plenty of distance between the supply and returns inside the building to help move the air around the shop.

The price on this is "too good to be true"! Before you lay down any money, you need to find out if it actually works. Paying an HVAC guy $100 to inspect it, WHILE IT IS RUNNING, is cheap insurance. Or at least pay the current owner to install the unit and hold back some of the money until it has run for a week or 2.

And the EER is 9, where as a good min-split is over 14 ! You will be crying big time when the electric bill comes in in July, August and September !!

OK I see that. I was thinking of welding a full frame on 4 sides, but all I need is a lentil. That also doesnt limit the opening size. I was also thinking of putting one on the roof but long term maintenance and install may be a challange all the way up on the roof. Plus I have to cut into the roof.

If this is who I think it is they built a bunch of support trailers and then the business went under and they were sold for scrap. There were a lot of them so if this is the same guy he just wants them out.
