Hi guys,
I've been wanting to build a garage for a while and may finally be able to. As I was researching garages I came across a company that makes basically overgrown sheds for garages. I wouldn't think you would be able to jack or have jack stands on a wooden floor or would you? It may get electric and water and heat not sure on those just yet. Just wondering if anyone had one or thoughts on buying/building one.
Thanks,
Jon

I can't find the thread, but there was a great discussion of using a shed and the guy reinforced the floor and ran power. Looked real nice. I will try to find the thread tonight.

Double layer of 3/4 advantech 16 or 12 OC like some of those amish garages have I don't see any reason you couldn't use a jack. Might want to put something under jackstands to keep from denting the floor, but they won't go through.

My old garage was 2x12 floor 16 oc and I used a jack no problem.

I just built an over grown shed that is basically a garage. It's 14ishx22ish. I use the ish because it's not exact. I went as big as I could around rocks and trees. I am $2500 all in. I did spend another $200 on a sub panel, wiring, and outlets. It sits on 15 10" piers. I had to raise it to avoid rocks. I keep my tractor and gator in there. No issues what so ever with the floor. Putting an actual car might make me a little uneasy, but in a pinch I would.

Frame. Not shown are the joists and the 5 additional piers I have down the middle.

It's all 2x6PT for the frame. Sorry for the sideways.

Ok. I thought there HAD to be at least one person using a large shed as a garage. If I go that route I hope it to be at least 24'x24' or a decent 2 car garage.

If you are going that big you really want a foundation or a slab. Something that big is going to get torn apart from settling and frost heaves just sitting on dirt or blocks.

My old garage is 12x16 wood floor sitting on blocks just enough for one car. When I bought the place the floor framing had pulled all apart, I had to fix it all before I could use it.

Jon,
I'm very interested in the same thing. My property is really steep. If I build the foundation and fill it then pour a floor, it will cost more than I'm willing to spend, but
piers and a heavy duty wood floor make it all work that I can do and brings the cost back into reality. Just don't want to build junk that I can't use, or that some future buyer might think is not a "real" garage....
