Thinking about a new compressor

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my compressor. My current one is a Husky-Pro 26 Gal, 5 hp, 6.6 SCFM @ 40 psi, 90 SCFM @ 90 psi. I would like to get a 60 gal, vertical compressor. I saw one at Tractor supply today that was a Ingersoll Rand but it was made in China and I would like to buy one made in the US. If I can I would like to keep it under 1000.00. Any advice would be helpful. BTW I started sandblasting the Arbor press tonight and should have it ready to paint next week. I am now looking for the plate that it is missing. Ed.

All I can say is good luck on your quest finding a sub $1000 60gal vertical compressor that's all US made.

I would have to agree that you will have a hard time finding one for under $1K. Used possibly...C List maybe? Good luck.

I would highly recommend you save up another $500 and get a Quincy 60 gallon 5 horse model for about $1500. If you keep the oil changed and the air filter changed it will last you the rest of your life. I know money is tight, but in the long run it will be cheaper. You can type Quincy Compressors in the Google search engine and take a look at what they have. I did extensive research on all brands and bought this model and I am so glad I did.

Here is a US made Quincy that's well within your budget. Free shipping and no tax. Specs are pretty decent too.

Beware, don't necessarily get hung up on horsepower specs. The Chinese units typically are overrated. Compare CFM instead. I had an Ingersoll from Northern Tool. When the motor failed, I learned that the supposed 5 horsepower motor was actually a 3 horsepower in the real world. The guy at the local motor shop showed me the difference and explained that there are several ways to overrate a motor to make it sound more impressive than it actually is, which is what the Chinese Ingersoll had done. My current Champion compressor has a true 5 horse Baldor motor on it and its much more massive than the Chinese ones are.

I've owned a Puma 60 gallon compressor for a couple years now with excellent results. Not only is the price reasonable, but the compressor is quieter than my previous Campbell Hausfeld it replaced. Northern Tool and Aircompressorsdirect.com sell them for less than $700.

I think I am going to buy this compressor as well. Seems to have great reviews.

That's why I bought one and have been very pleased. Just so you know, Puma claims to be made in the USA, but I suspect is only assembled in the US.

Thanks for all of the replies and advice. I stopped at a local industrial supply place near my house and looked at a Rolair model# V5160PT03X. Its 60 gal,5hp and its cheaper than it is at Aircompressordirect.com. I will keep my eye on this one and also one of the Quincy models. Thanks again, Ed.

I just bought a 60 gallon IR from Tractor Supply after they put them on sale for 100 bucks off. Mine says made in USA...I saw the exact compressor at Lowes and it too said made in USA...as someone stated, that may mean assembled in USA. At my old place before moving from KY to TX, I had an 80 gal. IR and it was an excellent compressor for the 3 years I owned it...wish I had moved it with me.

I was looking at the Quincy as well but for that kind of $$ I may keep looking for a two-stage. Correct me if I'm wrong but, considerably more quiet and way better for air tools.

All of these compressors for $1000 or less feature either a Brazilian or Chinese pump and motor. The Quincy posted above looks like a Schultz pump from Brazil, not a true Quincy pump. The tanks may be made in the USA and they may be assembled in the USA, but they are not necessarily made in USA. Champion also offers a low end line like this under the "Air-On-Line" program and their "Centurion" line. They should be OK for occasional home use, but not recommended for professional use.

To Aahz, further to your comment regarding champion's centurion line being their lower end compressors...
Do you have any opinion regarding Champion's advantage series line. Is the advantage series of much higher quality, value, reliability than the centurion line.
What specifically is the difference if looking at same hp.

I have run across a centurion 5hp on Craigslist $500. I don't find many PL or advantage series for sale in south texas

thanks for any replies, MC
