I've seen Cardboard balers fairly reasonable and
was thinking about building a Hyd. press out of
one. They have long cylinders and plenty of
extra steel for re-working the framework etc.

Any thoughts?

Yea, that would be the ticket. There's a lot of tonnage there, at least judging by the ones I worked on. The bale got unloaded by a forklift. The hydraulic cylinder was probably 6" or 8" bore....just have to integrate the jogging valve and the closed center position so the cylinder will "hold".

I appreciate your input.

Going to be a huge press. Check on the voltages. I think the ones I’ve seen are 480. Not available in most home shops

I have a hydraulic cylinder off a log crane about a 5-6" barrel (I.D.) with a 2.5" rod @ 30-32" (IIRC) long. It's only rated to about 2500psi when used in the original application, IE, lifting 8000lbs @ 10' reach. I doubt it would do well as a press cylinder. It's about perfect for a log splitter though. A farm implement style cylinder would likely be rated for less overall.
