I'm at the same spot.. thinning out years of ****. I bought a 10' x 14' shed which comes next week. This will get the yard & garden things out of my way and I can make better "keep or toss" decisions.

I have things like spackle buckets of used hardware I've had for 30 + years, most of that will go into the iron pile. I've run across machine shop supplies that I have no idea where they came from, but useful stuff.

I've already thrown out lots of junk, more to follow as I un-earth it.

It is always nice to have a fresh space. I wish I had another conex, but I can't afford it yet. 5 gallon buckets of stuff are the worst, I used to do that. Whenever I needed something, I would end up dumping the bucket out to try and find what I needed, only to realize it was not there.

I also buy fasteners in boxes of 100. One of the ways that I keep up with them is I put every thing of that size and thread pitch in the same drawer.

Example:
Drawer 1 is 1/4-20. It has all the bolts with that thread along with nuts and washers. If I can I take the box, fold the top back (tape it down) and leave it in the drawer. That way the bolts of the same length stay together.

Drawer 2 is another size with the same idea.

When I am working on something I can walk up to the cabinet, pull the drawer i want to work with and grab a nut, bolt, and washers that fit without opening another drawer. It works for me.

Also, I've added doors to some of my cabinets and used white bathroom wallboard on the outside. If I need to remember to buy something I write it on the wallboard with a note about which project. When I get ready to leave I take a picture of the whiteboard with my phone. Now I have a portable list at the hardware store.

I added a ton of pictures to my other thread, don't feel like clogging up GJ with duplicates.

Tomorrow is looking like rain, so I may get to move some stuff around inside. I am setting a goal of organizing two drawers, I hope the heck I can managed that. I have lots of other little things to do as well, I am going to make another burn pile, I am also bringing home a bunch of scrap aluminum to drop off in the morning.

I brought the aluminum in, not bad for a car load $159.

I did not do anything outside, I spent the morning doing errands. I actually got to the shop around 1:30 PM. I spent about 3 hours tonight organizing some of the drawers in the stock room.

I started with an empty drawer:

I took a bunch of my smaller drawers and combined them into two drawers. This is an example of what I started with:

Here is my newly organized drawer, labeled "electrical".

This is another drawer that I combined, it is also labeled "electrical", that may change, but it works for now.

I labeled the two drawers, as well as temporarily labeling the other drawers from the original cabinets

I started on a few more drawers, but I have not finished. I now have a decent sized bucket of scrap miscellaneous hardware as well as some newly found empty drawers.
