The more I think about this, here’s what I’d do. Get a 1/4 drive reversible ratcheting wrench and figure out a way to keep the bit from passing through. I’d probably put a tiny bead, or a drop of JB Weld, or something like that to keep it from pushing through, but not so thick it makes the bit stick out farther. That’s about as thin as you’re going to get.

Another VIM, I believe I got as a GJ SS gift, is the HBR4. The bit end is almost flush with the head when inserted so it's pretty much only limited by the bit length. Currently $10.50 on Amazon with free shipping if you have prime...you do have prime right?

Who made 1/4" hex drive sockets? That sounds super useful for things just like this but Google fails me

I use the old Indestro/Duro cheapo hex drive sockets. They also made a bolt grabber/extractor, which does come in handy on occasion.

Here's another approach from Facom....the ratchet is bulkier than others but requires "no swing". Great for use in tight spots. Throttling (rotating) the handle rotates the drive end of the ratchet. No pricing yet.

That looks cool. There is also a couple of new Craftsman offerings at Lowes. I bought 2 of those last night.

From the other side... How thin do you think would be too thin?
