How do you set up an "avatar" thing on here so whenever i post something it has a pic beside my username?

Click on "User CP" in the black menu band below the site logo.
Then click on "Edit Profile Picture" under "Your Profile"
Then click on "Edit Profile Picture" under "Your Profile"

You need to click on "user CP" then click "edit avatar" not edit profile picture.

And make sure the picture used doesn't exceed the size limit.
