The thread about hex keys and looking for a good set, and an e-mail I received from MSC Direct and MSC having a Made in USA Sale made me look up American Made Hex Keys. One page, 9 sets, only one has a brand name, but look at the prices http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/Han...sories/Hex-Key-Sets?navid=12103427+4294960022

Now with them they have a category of "Made in USA" Look at the damn prices and tell me that companies aren't using that phrase to **** people. Grab your toes and get the Vaseline http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/?se...e in United&typahddsp=Made in USA&hdrsrh=true

How retarded are they? I bet I can get a better deal and tool with everything snapon. The made in USA thing is getting out of hand. I am all for it, and pay a few bucks more every time, but seriously, $30 for a punch, each.

Now that would be a real ****** trick to pull.

I went through a few of the categories and know what I basically ordered items for when I was working, and some are in line, but some are just pure ridiculous.

The really expensive extra long hex keys are made by BTI/Better Tools for Industry according to the enlarged photo. This appears to be the website. http://www.bti-tool.com/hand-tools/hex-l-keys.html . The expensive hex keys are T-Handle style with replaceable tips that fit in a socket that is broached to the hex size. The handles are available in 6", 12", 18" and 24" lengths. This is the page that explains the features. Supposedly "patent pending". http://www.bti-tool.com/images/t-driver.jpg These are the prices for individual Keys. http://www.bti-tool.com/hand-tools/super-t-drivers/metric-sizes/12in.lg.html If these were labeled Snap-On or made by some company in Europe I doubt anybody would be surprised at the prices.

Whenever I've ordered "Made in USA" stuff from Enco (same thing as MSC) it truly has been made in the states. Recent examples include a replacement quill stop for my BP and quill lever (the ones that index by just swinging the handle to retract a pin). Also some 5C collet stops.

They show Eklind L keys also. The prices seem high but not into silly high yet.

I have and use Eklind allens, they are quite good.

If Mr. Colbert is the one to answer the cry of USA made products and they hold up to regular use he is a marketing genius. This is what all the outcry is about, isn't it? Plus he is offering a useful product now and that is new for him. Although it is a really interesting brand name to choose.

Kevin whenever I order from MSC, they always bend over backwards as they say and they make sure that what I order is made in the States.

Not sure what is going on but if you talk to them on the phone they will be honest with you.

MSC gives me my own rep and she's always trying to build discounts into my account. I could just call her and say I think I've been ordering a lot of abrasives and I want a discount on all abrasives in the future, she'll just set it up so any abrasives in my cart come up 10 to 20% off. Combine that with overnight shipping at the same cost as ground and a true, actual understanding of customer service and I don't mind paying a bit more at MSC now and then. They ALWAYS stock what I need and I have it tomorrow without having to pay for some sort of a loyalty (ie Prime) program.

They deserve to make a few more bucks 'cause they employ people HERE who answer the phone in English and WILL listen if you have a complaint. My business would fall on its face without MSC. McMaster can go **** it 'cause that's exactly what they tell me if I call with a problem on an order.

Kevin54 - you're looking for tools the wrong way.

The best way is to get the part number of the tool you're interested in and then enter that brand name and part number into Google -- then you can compare prices of the search results.

First off, How did "Why are these hex so expensive" turn into an MSC ***** thread?

The T-handle hex key sets you linked to in the MSC "made in USA section are expensive because of how they're made. The T-handle is welded out of thick high strength alloy steel, matched to the size of the hex bit it's going to hold. the end then has to be drilled and broached to the size of the hex bit the key is going to hold, and a separate bit is inserted and locked with a set screw. if the tip breaks a separate one can be purchased or a regular L-shaped hex key can be cut down and inserted. This is similar to the way Snap-On manufactures their hex sockets, and the cost is about the same. Bristol is the only other company I know of that still manufactures T-handle hex keys this way. I believe Unbrako used to sell T-handles made this way as well but they may have been sourced from Bristol. Most other T-handle hex keys are manufactured using a less expensive process, and if they break you have to replace the entire key.

Two, MSC sells Bondhus hex keys. They also sell Eklind if you want high quality USA manufactured hex keys. They also have Wera, Wiha, and Excelite if you don't mind high quality import. I'm not sure whether the Excelite are USA made or not. Under "hex drivers" they also have Allen and Proto listed, and under "hex key sets" they also have Blackhawk, Ampco, Certified Insulated Products, Stanley, and Paramount, listed.

http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/Han...rivers-Accessories/Hex-Drivers?navid=12103438

This page has the T-handle Bondhus hex keys if that's what you're looking for. The Bondhus T-handle sets seem to cost between $35 and $70 dollars. I'll let you figure out whether those are good prices using Google or Amazon or whatever.

http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/Han...Key-Sets?navid=12103427+4294950246+4288225812

The reason the Bondhus hex keys didn't come up in the "made in USA" category has to do with the way the MSC database was built. There doesn't appear to have been a separate column for COO built into the database, or at least the website. Somebody at MSC simply changed switched the manufacturer info to "made in USA". MSC didn't change the info for all the items that were manufactured in the USA though, probably because purchasers may specifically look for certain brands like Eklind or Bondhus. They probably changed the BTI/Better Tools for Industry and Ronco manufacturer info, because few people have probably heard of them, so it wouldn't likely cause any problems.

First off, How did "Why are these hex so expensive" turn into an MSC ***** thread?

It's not just hex keys, but other items with the "Made in USA" logo has really surpassed reasonable pricing for what the item is. I'm a Toolmaker and also ordered perishable tooling for our department. I didn't start it to bash hex keys or MSC, I was pointing out that a lot of the prices for items MADE in USA have gotten out of hand compared to other items. I've ordered thousands and thousands of dollars worth of items of of MSC over the years. Now they carry a special section of MADE in USA items and some of the prices are just out of line for a lot of people. I realize their MAIN business is to cater to companies and not the person off of the street, but even with that, the cost still filters down to the little guy somewhere.

For a person that has a home small shop and like to tinker around, but would also like to have a quality product, would you pay $30 for a tap that is MADE in USA that you may use once or twice a year, or pay $7.00 for an alternate tap that would do the very same exact thing and last just as long. That was my point. In looking through their catalog and the MADE in USA items, some of the prices border on from being reasonable to going equal to FASTENAL prices

We are proud to sell Made in Canad tee shirts up here for $50. The imports are only $15. I always heard USA was a small town outside Peking!
