I went to put together a new US General box the other day, and was miffed to find that I couldn't get the bolts for the casters to start in the threads. Then I looked closely at the bolt I had been trying in all of the holes and noticed something funny -- it didn't actually have a proper thread (i.e., a spiral) cut into it -- just a series of parallel circles along the axis! Not sure how they pulled that trick... :headscrat

Oh, that's that new zero turn bolt. Just line it up with the hole and tap it with a 3 lb sledge. :D

we pull those out of boxes of bulk hardware every once in a while. the flat dies that roll the threads get mis aligned. i have seen some with no threads and some with threads running the wrong direction. i have seen it in the internationally sourced hardware and in the domestic stuff. it's simple fall out.

It's a HF rivet. You must first heat it up with a torch, push it in the hole and use an air hammer to mushroom the other end. The "threads" are there to help with the mushroom process. ;);)

I had a customer bring a HF trailer to me to assemble. I can assure you, that bolt is not rare in any way.

I'll keep that in mind if I run out of proper M8 bolts next time I'm putting a piece of HF stuff together... ;)

Well, thankfully it was only 2 out of the 16 like that on this one...but that's still two more than I've run into anywhere else!

I ended up with a 10' 3/8" threaded rod that was like that.

Thought I was going nuts.

Finally put my glasses on and figured out the problem.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy one of those damn trailers, then. That thing made me want to scream. By the time I charged enough to make it worth my while, between my labor and buying the thing he coulda bought a US-made, preassembled, decked Carry-On from HD or Lowe's. :wtf: [/rant]

I bought a HF tool cart couple years ago for my Lincoln HD welder. Could not get the fasteners to work. came with bolts like that. Pitched them. I went to my local hdwe store, bought box of each-nuts, bolts lock washers and assembled it. I really like the cart, (fits the welder perfectly and is the exact same color) but the fasteners that came with the cart **** almost as much as their sandpaper does.

"That IS a mold for ribbed condoms for use in China."

Great one 64Trvlr.

I suppose it would qualify as a Magnum over there as well?
