This is for a Stanley.. What?

Picked this up mostly becaus it said Stanley on it and was clearly vintage/Antique.


The hole is 3/8", and I thought originally where the threaded set screw is was threaded through. its not. So I suspect this is for a spring loaded detent of some sort, so the set screw would not have a wing nut I don't think.

Overall length is about 2-1/2", and its about 7/16 thick.

I'm thinking this is a guide for maybe a special plane, and uses detents for preset distances? :dunno:

Anyone have one and knows exactly what it is for?

Your set screw seems a little odd...

Do you mean the set screw does not pass through to the unthreaded hole? That would be odd. There are at least two variations of the cam rest, but yours seems like it ought to be threaded through... :dunno:

I already commented on the set screw..

On how far the hole is threaded, the threads stop about 1/3 the way in, so if it is not for a detent, of some sort, the set screw would have to have the threads cleared off for about 2/3 to 3/4 for the remaining distance, or a separate piece would need to be in there floating (maybe brass?)

I actually have an incomplete No. 45 in somewhat dismal shape, but it is missing the round bars and of course this cam rest piece, so cutter handle, guide, and depth support only...

I also have another cutter holder/handle (In terrible shape) that looks slightly different, and has no number, and does not say Stanley on it anywhere I can see past the crud. This one is actually far more ornate. I think I'll try to get both of these into a vinegar bath today...

Thanks for the links and the second link may have provided a clue on the screw:

if you look at a close up there appears to be an unthreaded brass bit sticking gout into the rod hole, and I would guesstimate that it is smaller that the OD of the threads...

Millers Pat. plow plane?

I just Googled some images of that one, so not quite that ornate, but more so than the Stanley with it's grid pattern; this appears to be a leaf type pattern. it has no blade depth adjustment/set, and the blade clamp screw comes in at the opposite and steeper angle compared to the Stanley.

For the wood pistol grips, how are these attached? I see no pins or screws, are they glued? Hide glue perhaps? A bit of heat to get them off?
