I decided to order some of the lights and adaptors mentioned by Platonic.

It seems like I'm getting mixed responses, do the gurus here think I'll have a garage-burning-down problem? I didn't even consider it until it was brought up.

not having a GFCI on the circuit isn't going to make any more risk of it burning down. GFCI is meant to protect you from shock, not fire. Considering these are on the ceiling, I don't think there is much risk of shock.

but for other 15A circuits you would multiply 1800W by 80% giving you 1440W max

Only if they're continuous loads.
There IS a rule that any single plugged in appliance cannot exceed 80% of the circuit rating though.
