If I weld (well) the tire hanger to a larger piece of angle (2x2x1/8) do you feel this spare tire hanging method would be adequate? Pic of my welding "skill" and the project for reference...

I don't want the tire mount U-bolt draping off the angle as I want the top to remain flat for the storage box.

I know, don't weight the rear of the trailer too much, keep the tongue weight up...

Going to attach additional lights and move license plate as well.

Think I would rotate the hanger and attach to the big angle iron directly. If that doesn’t fit I’d cross brace that bar out to the sides so there is an x support over the hanger. If nothing else under there consider making a “shelf” to slide the tire into from the rear. No messing with rusted bolts three years from now in the middle of the night when you get a flat

Thanks both, wheels are turning. Ducksface - isn't the U-bolt I am showing/using the item you keep referring to? If not, link to it, please.

I'm having a bit of a time seeing individual things in your pictures.
If it's the u bolt one pre-made, then you're ahead of me on your design and I have nothing to add.

No offense, but there appears to be quite a bit of cold lap in that example weld pic you posted. Do you trust yourself to make good welds on that u-bolt? If you aren't comfortable with it, perhaps a re-design is in order.

The shelf idea is great. If the spare is hanging down, it may get whacked or sheared off, and the rusty bolts (as mentioned) won't be fun later. If you bolt the spare on, put a lot of anti-seize compound on the threads, safety-wire the nuts, and check it all every year.

Tire under a extended frame on rear of trailer? What do you think is going to happen when you go in and out of drive ways? ...and while mounting under vehicle is common over time the rim will rot out at the bead. ...and have you figured out if you will be able to access it when a tire is flat?

I would put the u bolt over the angle. Then the angle on top of the frame. If you really need it “flat” weld mesh over the top of it

Be careful with the added weight so far behind the axles.

I built a similar setup onto mine and it really affected the stability of the trailer. The extra storage was great, but the handling impact wasn't worth it. I cut it off after a couple trips.
