Notice that no one made any snide remarks....your idea is not funny....and I can see why you thought of it....but as the other guys said...it will stretch and your concrete will crack.

The fence material is a pretty soft steel to begin with...and the way it's laid out lends itself to to stretching......if you look rebar you will see the ridges in the bar stock....the primary purpose of rebar is to prefent the concrete from pulling apart...concrete has outstanding compression strenght but poor pulling strenght....the rebar is typically put at the bottom of a slab...when you put weight on it, the bottom trys to pull apart....but the rebar prevents that...top goes into compression....slab holds the weight.

Don't put in concrete what is not made for concrete. I'm not even fond of the wire mesh made for concrete. I would use rebar all the way. As Ddawg stated it is made to hold it from pulling. Rebar is also made to keep one side of a slab from dropping lower than the other side if (better yet when) you get a crack, and preventing a trip hazard. Chain link fence would stretch every which way. Also make sure your base is properly done. If it is stone, make sure it is tamped down, tamped some more, then tamp again for good measure. If the kids say they are bored, let them tamp some stone. LOL!!! If stone is just dumped and spread around, you can place a bet that the concrete will crack later on from the stone settling.

BTW....WELCOME to the GJ. :hellobye: Pics of projects are required. :lol_hitti
